Hasta La Gadget!

Did ViewSonic’s 10-inch tablets catch your eye? We’ve got good and bad news. The good news is that the G-Tablet (with a 1GHz processor and Android 2.2) is now on sale at Sears for $379.99 — even less than we were told. The bad news is that the Intel Atom N455-powered ViewPad 10 apparently is, too. We say apparently because Sears seems to have crossed some wires when putting the latter slate up on its site, most egregiously stating that that dual-booting device does both Windows 7 and Android 2.2 for the exact same $379.99. Last we heard, the ViewPad 10 — like the eerily similar Tega v2 — could only do Android 1.6 alongside Microsoft’s OS and would cost quite a bit more. Don’t rely on Sears to cut you a deal, folks.

Waiting for a Windows 7 tablet PC with the page-turning Macallan UI on board? Don’t hold your breath, because UI Centric tells us the project has been canceled and isn’t talking details. Though a July press release claimed the touchscreen interface was slated for an undisclosed tablet in Q3 of this year, that document has since been pulled, so it’s probably safe to say that deal fell through. Still, the company informs us that there’s a new announcement on the way, and we hate to dismiss vaporware out of hand — if you’ve got a spare diving-class oxygen tank or three, perhaps you can afford to breathe in.

Want to see how multitouch works in Maverick Meerkat‘s Unity UI, but don’t have a convertible tablet PC? You’re in luck today, as Ubuntu Developers put together a handy-dandy video of the Ubuntu 10.10 interface running on their very own Dell Latitude XT2‘s dual-digitizer touchscreen. As you’d expect, the $2,400 convertible does a bang-up job as a tablet PC, playing Flash video and OpenGL games with ease, but the uTouch gestures appear to contribute to the overall experience by making window management a relative breeze. But in the immortal words of LeVar Burton, you don’t have to take our word for it — see for yourself right after the break, while we pray for Canonical to reconsider its stance on a dedicated tablet version of Ubuntu.

We’d heard the HP Slate finally had a date with destiny (and corporate pocketbooks) sometime this fall, and it’s looking like the device is nigh — a number of boutique online retailers are taking orders for an HP Slate 500, which purportedly comes with an Intel Atom Z540 CPU, 8.9-inch WSVGA LED-backlit screen, 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 64GB solid state drive, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a webcam, a two-cell battery and Windows 7 Professional installed, all for somewhere around the vicinity of $800 to $900. What’s more, CNET‘s just stumbled upon a document that apparently details the same, plus an HP Slate Digital Pen (no doubt for those who abhor sausages) and a rear-facing 3 megapixel camera. We’d chalk up the CNET leaks to old prototype documentation and the e-tailer product listings to wishful thinking if either appeared on their own, but together we have to imagine there’s some sort of wind a’ blowing.

Well, we finally have a price on this thing! America’s largest carrier has announced plans to sell Samsung’s Galaxy Tab for… $599.99. The 3G, Android 2.2-based unit (which will be loaded with V CAST apps, of course) will hit retail on November 11th, and since it’s being sold at full price, a data plan (which starts at $20 per month for 1GB) is completely optional. It looks like customers will have some fairly strong choices on Big Red, considering that the impossible-to-ignore iPad is being made available in Verizon’s stores as well. Tough decisions are ahead for potential tablet buyers — but we’re sure you’ll do what’s right. Check out the full press release below, and good luck!
