Hasta La Gadget!

Okay, okay, so the last time a company teased “something big,” they were exaggerating a tad, but this video here comes from SpaceX, maker of giant rockets. So when the only commercial organization that shot a hunk of burning metal into orbit and retreived it back on Earth tells us to look out for something with “five new engines” and “two new rockets” on 11:15AM ET on April 5th, you’d best believe we’re going to have our tails firmly pressed into comfy chairs and popcorn at the ready to watch it. Spoiler alert: it’s probably the Falcon Heavy.

It’s been quite a while since Ainol last popped up on our radar, but it looks like the company is now busy preparing a Honeycomb tablet that might actually stand out from the pack — for better or worse. According to a couple of teasers that have cropped up in recent days, the tablet will apparently pack an ARM Cortex A9 processor, a 1,280 x 800 IPS display of unspecified size, WiFi and 3G connectivity, a microSD card slot, HDMI out and, most noticeably, a full suite of buttons that adorn what appears to be a somewhat chunky design. Still no indication of a price, but the tablet is apparently due out sometime next month.

Samsung hasn’t been entirely shy about its forthcoming 8.9-inch tablet, though Mr. Blurrycam seems to be having some trouble getting on a plane in Seoul. Fortunately for us, today the Korean giant decided to give us mere mortals a sneak peek at said device, and it sure looks promising — as you can see above, the bulge seems to imply that the tablet’s general thickness almost matches the headphone jack’s height. If true, this would put Samsung’s 8.9-incher head to head with Apple’s 8.8mm thick iPad 2 in a fitness contest. Bring on March 22nd!

Give yourself a cookie if you can still remember as far back as August 29th of last year. That was the day when HP’s Phil McKinney teased the world with images of three new prototypes being developed in his company’s labs — there was a tablet, now known as the HP TouchPad, a smartphone that’s since taken on the name of Pre 3, and something snaked around his wrist that looked suspiciously like a watch. Today, we learn more about this Metal Watch, as HP calls. It’s a continuation of the company’s overarching theme of mobile interconnectedness, however unlike its webOS devices, this connected watch is nowhere near ready for prime time (or maybe it’s just like them since none are actually shipping yet!). The new Metal fella is still a research project as much as anything else, but it’s seen as a key part of our future, acting as an easy-to-use information aggregator. It looks just like any old watch to us, but why not jump past the break and let HP’s CTO enlighten you on what makes it special?

So far, AMD’s new Fusion chips have been all about the low-end, whether you’re talking in terms of price, performance or power consumption, but the company has a vision for its future that has these new Accelerated Processing Units dominating every segment of the market. In order to do that, AMD will need to overcome Intel’s latest generation of mainstream processors, the Core 2011 family we’re more familiar with under the Sandy Bridge codename. Before you rush past the break and watch AMD’s own comparison between said Intel hardware and the forthcoming quad-core Llano APU, be aware that processor performance can rarely be generalized from a single test alone and the one we’re witnessing is specifically geared to highlight the Fusion chip’s strengths. All that said, the workload demonstrated by AMD — a 3D game, HD video playback (plus post-processing on the Llano rig), Excel calculations, and some 3D modeling, all running simultaneously — is handled most impressively by the A8-3510MX APU, which even manages to use less power than Intel’s 2GHz Core i7-2630QM.
