TiVo and Amazon Jump in on Video Downloads Too!

This article was written on February 07, 2007 by CyberNet.

Remember the partnership that was announced between TiVo and Netflix which fell through? Now TiVo has entered into another partnership, this time with Amazon to bring movies to TiVo users. This announcement was made yesterday, several hours after Wal-Mart released their version of Video Downloads.

While TiVo and Amazon aren’t at the point where they can release the service to everyone, a test version begins today.  It’s called Amazon Unbox on Tivo, which an unspecified amount of testers will be able to try-out. Although a final date hasn’t been given, the service will be available to everybody later this year to those who have TiVo digital recorders with broadband Internet capability.

I think it’s a great idea for TiVo to grab the market that they already have, and give them the option to get movies right to their TVs. After purchasing the shows by placing your order through the existing Unbox Video service from Amazon, movies will be delivered right to the TiVo box. This is definitely a big difference from the Wal-Mart download service, because you’ll be able to view the movies on your TV with no extra hassle. The movies would appear in the “Now Playing” list with all of your additional TiVo content.

Another nice feature is that Amazon will store all of your purchased videos in your Media Library (online) so that you can always go back and re-download a movie if you decide to delete it off of your TiVo.  This will ensure that you always have room to download new movies.

Now on to the prices.  The talk yesterday with Wal-Mart’s service is that the prices are too high for a movie that can’t even be downloaded to DVD. The prices for the TiVo and Amazon deal have been set at TV episodes for $1.99, and movies between $9.99 and $14.99.  Movie rentals would be $1.99.  So far, thousands of movies will be available from Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, Paramount, and Warner Brothers. TV shows will be offered from CBS, and Fox.

Other agreements from additional studios are expected in the future, and no additional subscription fees will be charged to TiVo users. According to Adams Media Research, Internet downloading is expected to bring in $4 billion in annual sales in five years compared to $27 billion from DVD rentals and sales.  If you’re a TiVo subscriber, this is good news! If you’re not, well, just hold out. I’m sure other (perhaps even better) options will be peeking out soon!

Amazon Unbox on TiVo: Movie Downloads Without the Hassle

This article was written on July 10, 2007 by CyberNet.

TivoRemember back in February when TiVo and Amazon announced a partnership to bring movies to TiVo users? At the time, those who wanted to use the service were required to purchase the movies that they wanted from the Amazon website which obviously required the use of a computer. This just added an extra step in the process of trying to watch a movie. The good news is that as of today, a computer is no longer required!

The “Buy on TV” feature, as it’s being called, works with series 2 and series 3 TiVo’s that are connected to broadband Internet. Users will be able to purchase the movies that they want using their TiVo box, and the remote.  The entire experience from start to finish is done on the TiVo.

Buy on TV Quick Facts

  1. TV shows will cost $1.00 for each episode
  2. New movies just released on DVD will start at $7.97
  3. Older movies will start at $1.99
  4. More than 1,100 movies are available for rent
  5. More than 2,000 movies are available for purchase

Because it’s so easy to flip through movies right on your TV, it would probably be easy for children to purchase movies without parent consent. This won’t be a problem however, because there’s now a 5 digit pin which must be entered before a movie can be purchased.

There are several movie services like this available, but I’d say Amazon and TiVo take the cake with this one. People don’t like extra added steps to get what they want. “Buy on TV” is the simplest way to get the movies that you want on your TV without any hassles. Nice job!

Virgin Media’s TiVos get updated with Spotify, iOS app support and more

Over in the UK, Virgin Media has given a lucky few (3,500 or so) access to a pilot update for their TiVo DVRs that adds many of the features we’d heard were on the way, plus some extras. Word out of Crawley and Cambridge is that multiroom streaming is enabled, there’s faster performance and an official community post mentions compatibility with TiVo’s iOS apps, BBC iPlayer integration and music streaming from Spotify. A wider rollout is expected before Christmas, for a full list of changes check out the links below.

TiVo Premiere Elite now available, but is updated software the big surprise?

The four-tuner, 2TB hard drive-equipped TiVo Premiere Elite DVR is officially available. It popped up over the weekend on Weaknees and in Best Buy Magnolia stores, and some eager users have already taken them home and dug deep into the hardware and software. Gizmo Lovers points out the $499 box is packing updated software that hints at dual core support and more including Premiere-to-Premiere streaming, as well as 1GB of RAM built-in. If you prefer to get your DVR from your cable company, RCN is also apparently promising the Premiere Q and Preview extender boxes will be available in November. So far the early adopters are reporting increased speed, but we should find out what the new boxes are really capable of when all their features go live today, so stay tuned.

Facebook partners up to bring music, news and videos to your profile through Open Graph (video)

Facebook’s f8 developer conference is going on today, and Andy Samberg Mark Zuckerberg has just revealed another part of his master plan for the social network. Open Graph will now integrate many of your favorite news and music services, including Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio and MOG onto your Facebook page with custom apps, and will also bring video from Vevo, Netflix, Hulu and many more. The media platform’s already up and running, so you can see (and hear) the results of Mark’s labor right now.

Update: Unfortunately for Facebook users in the US, Netflix has confirmed that its Facebook integration will only be available in Canada and Latin America initially, due to a US law that “creates some confusion over our ability to allow U.S. members to share what they watch.” That doesn’t apply to the music services, however, and you can get an idea how Spotify will work in the video after the break. Even TiVo’s gotten in on the action, announcing new sharing buttons for its iPhone and iPad mobile apps, although there’s no direct DVR integration mentioned yet.

CEDIA 2011 odds and ends wrap up: THX, TiVo and plenty of projectors

Another CEDIA is in the books, and if you weren’t there, just know the story was — as it has been in many corners of the country — the economy. Oh sure, projectors that cost only $10k still seemed value priced, but everywhere you looked companies were extending their products a little closer to the mass market. Whether it’s a heavy duty wall mounts, wireless hi fi systems or, most surprisingly, $300 powered shades from companies like Lutron, custom theater equipment is getting cheaper and ready to work in more homes. Interested in remaking a home theater while spending less than $10k and without building an entirely new house around it? 2011 may be your year.

As far as the hardware on display, we also got a look at TiVo’s new Premiere Elite DVR (hint: it looks and runs like a TiVo) and Dish Network’s new Tailgater portable satellite dish. Another treat was an MHL-to-HDMI adapter from DVDO that could make hooking your celly up to pretty much any TV on the go and charging it at the same time easy. At the THX booth, it had its stamp slapped on LG’s newest Nano LED lit 3D LCD, as well as a new program for soundbar / subwoofer combinations it says will result in more accurate sound for implementations where surround speakers don’t make sense. We also got a demo of its new Media Director protocol that can automatically configure compatible home theater equipment based on the content being watched. The Star Wars Blu-ray discs will be the first ones to ship with the embedded metadata, while partnerships with chipmakers mean software updates could start rolling out shortly for manufacturers that choose to deliver them — the demo ran on an HDI Dune player — and next year’s new devices should ship with the feature included.

The usual slew of projectors included new models from Mitsubishi and Digital Projection, with automatic settings for ultrawidescreen viewing as one of the hot features (other than 4K) this year. For a better look at some of the things we spotted on the show floor check the gallery below, and details in their press releases after the break.

TiVo Premiere Elite will bring quad tuners, 2TB storage to retail this year

When TiVo announced its first quad tuner DVR, the Premiere Q, fans were devastated to learn it would only be available via cable operators, and that it featured a smallish 500GB hard drive. Fortunately, the company has rectified both of those issues by announcing the TiVo Premiere Elite, a quad tuner Series 4 DVR with 2TB of storage built that will be available through TiVo.com, Best Buy’s Magnolia stores and authorized home theater installers. There’s no word yet on price or an exact release date, as all of this is still pending a waiver from the FCC allowing TiVo to sell the box without any OTA or analog cable tuners, making this a digital cable (or Verizon FiOS) only experience. It’s also THX Certified and most of the press release is dedicated to focusing on the high end nature of the hardware TiVo is unleashing. Also unmentioned so far is any retail edition of the TiVo Preview multiroom extender box, but we should get some hands-on time with this quad tuner edition very shortly during CEDIA 2011. For now, just check out the press release, included after the break, and for our European readers Engadget Spanish has you covered on the launch of the TiVo Premiere for ONO in Spain.

Update: The official TiVo.com/elite page is live, and reveals the price as $499 “with service”, $499 additional for a lifetime subscription. [Thanks @PhilipSaad]

TiVo talks cable, satellite deals in Q2 results; DirecTiVo exposed! (video)

TiVo’s results for the second quarter are here and there were a few tidbits that let us know where its products are going in the future. Despite reporting a net loss for the quarter, its cash position was up after receiving the first $300 million payment from its settlement with Dish Network. Things appear to be going well with Virgin Media in the UK where it reported 50,000 TiVo’s live by the end of July and ONO is closing in on a launch in Spain, while closer to home RCN is almost ready to officially offer a whole-home DVR setup based on the quad-tuner TiVo Premiere Q. Charter and DirecTV are mentioned as “progressing towards launch”, but the company seems particularly excited to see the current state of patent warfare going on, trumpeting its 210 issued patents and 389 applications.

Speaking of the DirecTivo, an apparent training video has leaked. ZatzNotFunny has more information, but it reveals the hardware and UI, which disappointingly harken back to the days of older Series3 hardware instead of the updated HD menus on the new Premiere boxes. Check out the video and Q2 press release after the break.

Android gets a TiVo Premiere remote app with TiVo Commander

We’re still waiting for a version of TiVo’s official remote to come to Android, but now there’s a homebrew option available in the meantime. TiVo Commander is a free open source app that just hit the Android Market based on the community’s research of how TiVo’s app talks to its DVRs. So far the feature list includes a full remote control with keyboard input, ability to browse recorded shows, search for shows/movies/actors, set recordings and see credits or suggestions for similar content to what’s being watched. Of course you’re giving up some of the slick look and convenient options that are still iOS-only but if you just want to get things working on your Motorola / Samsung / HTC / etc. device right now, that ability is just a click of the source link away.

[Thanks, @BrennokBob]

TiVo Premiere Elite quad-tuner DVR detailed, doesn’t support OTA broadcasts

Earlier this summer, we got wind of TiVo’s plans to release its Premiere Elite DVR — a retail version of the company’s quad-tuner Premiere Q, which is only available directly through service providers. We knew to expect four tuners on the Elite as well, letting you record content from up to four channels at once. A leaked FCC document sheds a bit more light on the Elite, revealing two terabytes of recording capacity (for a whopping 300 hours of HD), digital cable compatibility (read: no OTA), and support for Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA), for networking with other MoCA-enabled devices in your home. Still missing, however, are a price tag and release date, though Zatz Not Funny predicts pricing to land in the $600-800 range, with a release this fall. $499 seems to be more on target, though, considering the Premiere XL’s $299 price tag — but even at $500, you better really love television if you’re gunning to spend that much on a DVR.
