iPhone and Vodafone UK set the date: January 14

Vodafone has decided if it can’t give us the iPhone for the holidays, it’ll do the next best thing and spill details of its launch and pricing of Apple’s finest. Available from January 14, the iPhone will be yours for £30 ($48) per month on two-year contracts, though up-front charges will set you back £239 ($386) for the 32GB 3GS variety. A monthly 1GB of 3G data is permitted, alongside unlimited WiFi, but what might be most interesting here is that Vodafone will allow you to use the iPhone as a modem. Such use will not be covered by your allowance of course, and will cost £5 ($8) for each 500MB downloaded, but we’re happy to see a carrier offering the option. Furthermore, though Vodafone’s agreement to carry the iPhone seemed a rushed defensive move, the company now claims it has been preparing its network for over a year to handle the increased traffic it expects.

Vexia Econav GPS nags you about your driving

If the folks at Vexia are to be believed, green transportation is not about fancy electric vehicles or, heaven forbid, riding your bike — nope, it’s about having a GPS that offers advice on your driving. Both the Econav 480 (4.3-inch) and 380 (3.5-inch) can be configured for your specific automobile make and model, after which your usual calm, solitary driving experience is replaced by the cold mechanical voice of a satnav as it admonishes you for excessive acceleration, breaking, driving past the speed limit, and so forth. With other Econav models out in Spain for a while now, these guys are finally available to environmentally conscious Britons at prices starting at £149 (depending on model and map collection). And what about the states? It looks like you’ll be stuck taking driving direction from Homer Simpson for the time being.

Nokia N900 coming to Vodafone UK in January 2010

Quick and dirty bit of news for you lovely subjects of the United Kingdom and independent spirits of Ireland: Vodafone’s online store is showing the much hailed N900 as an option, with handsets expected at some point next month. The Irish arm of the carrier had already admitted it’ll be offering the device, and we foresee the two launching the handset simultaneously early in the new year, with regrettably little competition from the other UK carriers. As Electric Pig reported when the N900 first started shipping, only O2 replied with a “not yet,” while Orange and T-Mobile were presumably too busy making out to respond.

[Thanks, Rock]

Motorola Milestone becomes eXpansys UK’s ‘fastest selling gadget’

Call it a pent-up demand for WVGA Android devices, call it Droid jealousy, call it an unnatural love for the sweet, doughy goodness of a just-baked Eclair — but whatever it is, early indications suggest that the British love their Milestones. Retailer eXpansys (which is big enough to actually produce some meaningful sales trend data, we suspect) is reporting that the just-launched Droid clone for GSM became “the fastest selling gadget in the website’s 11 year history, even more successful than the iPhone” when it sold out inside of three hours on its site on top of the roughly 1,000 preorders they had taken prior to the 10th. This might be a case of double-speak — we’re trying to establish just how many phones were sold during those three hours, because what we really need is a sales rate, not a time span alone — so we’re cautioning Moto not to bust out the champagne glasses just yet, but it’s certainly looking like a promising start. Schaumburg hasn’t had a lot of success in Western Europe in recent years, of course, but if we can use eXpansys as a barometer here, we’d say that a little cautious optimism is well justified.

Motorola Milestone’s ad campaign less likely to leave you in a bloody heap than Droid’s

Motorola’s European version of the Droid — the Milestone — is on the verge of release in the UK, so it’s not surprising to see ads starting to pop up. This is the first we’ve seen, and we’ll say that the approach is… interesting. In contrast to the over the top, explosive (literally — did you see that banana?!) Verizon Droid ads, the Milestone ad is all about information, delivered in a soothing, sophisticated tone. “Intelligence and versatility converge” here, and we have to say we much prefer this approach over the it’s a “frickin’ robot” one taken by Verizon. Decide for yourself — the video is after the break.

Vodafone reportedly ditching the HD2 as iPhone launch looms (update: nope!)

Here’s an interesting one. Vodafone, which is one of the few carriers in the world right now with access to HTC’s HD2, is reportedly not going to stock the handset any longer once its current supply evaporates. The reason? Why, that’s a fantastic question! According to a company spokesperson, there has been a “massive amount of interest” in the big-screen mobile, with initial stock “selling out quickly and subsequent deliveries used to fulfill backorders.” Call us crazy, but it seems a wee bit foolish to can a product that’s selling well — unless, of course, Voda has a certain amount of iPhones that it’ll be required to sell just a few months from now (or else buy ’em itself). Whatever the case, we’re told that the operator “will not [be] re-stocking the HTC HD2 for general consumer sales once current stock runs out,” so if you’re jonesing for one, ten minutes ago would’ve been a great time to buy.

Update: Here’s the latest from Vodafone: “We haven’t recalled or stopped selling it, at the moment we have simply ran out of stock. When our next batch of stock arrives, this will be used to fulfill our outstanding back orders but we won’t be taking any additional orders via Telesales.”

Update 2: HTC pinged us directly and apologized for being unclear. Here’s the bottom line: “[The] HD2 will continue to be available on Vodafone, even after the iPhone launches.”

Dell Adamo XPS: Exclusive to John Lewis in the UK for the holiday season

If you’re lucky enough to live in the US, buying the super slim Adamo XPS is just a matter of hitting up Dell’s website — and then ponying up nearly $2,000, of course. Those in the UK, however, have been sorely out of luck. Luckily for them, we’re hearing that the much lusted-after laptop will be available at John Lewis department stores in time for holiday shopping. That’s right, this hinged baby — which boasts a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 processor, a 128GB SSD, a 13.4-inch WLED panel, a 2 megapixel camera, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and GS45 integrated graphics — will be available there as of today, for the base price of £1750 (that’s about $2,800). For a better idea of what this bad boy looks like, check out our hands-on impressions video after the break.

iPhone 3GS coming to Tesco Mobile on December 14, extreme price plans in tow

The marriage of a high-priced smartphone to a value-minded department store was always going to be interesting and Tesco has not disappointed. Having just announced that availability of the latest and greatest iPhone is coming on December 14, the company has also detailed some unique — for the UK at least — price plans to go with it. Most notable is the unlimited (subject to fair use policy) 3G web and BT Openzone WiFi access on offer, which will be free for a year to Pay As You Go and one-year contract customers or for two years if you’re on a 24-month agreement. Tesco’s also bringing the minimum monthly outlay down to £20 ($32) on its one-year contract, but that only gets you a £60 ($98) calls and texts allowance and you’d have to pony up £320 ($520) for the 16GB handset. On the other hand, you could go nuts and get the unlimited calls and texts plan for £60 a month, which isn’t too bad value for the incessant chatterboxes out there. Finally, there’s also half-price calling to your favorite five numbers, which isn’t going to matter much to people on the all-you-can-eat price plan, but is a nice extra.

Google Maps Navigation makes trip across the pond, thanks to some hackery

Apparently us Yanks have been spoiled by the warm embrace of Google Maps Navigation, forgetting that our friends in the UK don’t have the same luxury. Leave it to Electricpig to connect worlds, finding a somewhat hack-induced way to bring the app upgrade to British Android 1.6 devices. Instructions are pretty easy, so if you’re game, don your DIY hat and click over.

Update: As indicated, the gang at xda-developers forum have been doing this for some time now. Consider the tutorial provided here as very straightforward and easy to follow — anyone with an Android 1.6 device would be remiss not to give Navigation a shot now.
