HTC Touch Diamond2 gets unboxed, shown off on video

We haven’t heard much about the appearance of the HTC Touch Diamond2 on US shores apart from a few AT&T-related whispers, but the squared-off handset is starting to pop up overseas, and the requisite unboxings and video tours have started flooding in. Sadly, these early units are still running Windows Mobile 6.1, so beauty’s only skin deep — or at least as deep as TouchFlo2 3D. Hardware video after the break, but there’s plenty more at the read links.

iriver P7 unboxing and review

We’ve been getting friendly with iriver’s latest touchscreen masterpiece over the past few days, and have a few impressions to share. In many ways, though, the P7 is exactly what the pictures and spec sheet make it out to be: great design, great specs, few surprises, and little in the way of “interesting” functionality. While the Apples and Microsofts of the world keep on merging the world of PMPs with PDAs with phones, iriver seems content here to build a “mere” media player and leave it at that. Read our full impressions after the break.

MSI’s Wind U123 netbook gets unboxed

We already caught MSI’s upgraded Wind U120 (which goes by U123, if you must know) sitting pretty at CeBIT last month, but the crazy cats over at PortableMonkey have gone and got a model fresh in the box. Needless to say, this retail edition (which is hitting Japanese shelves any moment now) didn’t stay packaged up for long, but we are happy to say that we’ve been cordially invited to feast our eyes upon the unboxing process. Right out of the gate, we have to share the disappointment in the lack of a rear panel for easily accessing the internal RAM and HDD, but at least the Atom N280 is a (minor) step above what we’ve grown accustomed to. Check the read link for all the pictorial delight.

[Thanks, Peter]

Video: Acer Aspire One D250 gets unboxed

Just days after the machine popped official on some of the company’s overseas web portals, Acer’s Aspire One D250 netbook has just been acquired and unboxed across the pond. The N280-powered rig doesn’t look drastically different than previous Acer netbooks, but you know you’re hungry to hit play and search intently for the minute changes. It’s just past the break, by the way.

Nintendo DSi unboxing and hands-on!

Now this is a pleasant surprise. We expected to get our hands on a DSi, just not today. Like the baby in a carriage of fictions-past, the little bundle of gadget joy arrived on our doorstep this morning. Regardless, Nintendo has outdone themselves on presentation this time around, seating the console in a large box that emits a sample of cheers and shines bright lights on you when you pop the lid. Seriously. Other than that, the DSi is about what we expected — slimmer, sleeker, lighter… generally a lot more DS-y. We ran into a few issues off the bat, like the fact that it can connect to our network, but not to Nintendo servers (this is an issue addressed in the manual — it makes no sense to us), and we found the menus to be slightly unwieldy to navigate through, but mostly we’re as excited as school children on X-mas morning. Take a look at the vast gallery below to see what’s what, and stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the DSi.

SmartQ 5 MID gets unboxed

We’ve already seen the SmartQ 5 MID out in the wild, and even sporting Ubuntu, but those sitting on pins and needles for the inevitable unboxing can now finally rest easy, as Kam Leung has stepped up and done the honors. From the looks of it, however, there’s nothing but the bare minimum included with the 4.3-inch MID / PMP although, judging from the pics, SmartQ may have been wise to at least include a dust cloth. Hit up the link below for the full show, and then start figuring out the best way to import one of these if you’re sold on it, as there’s still no word of an official release ’round here.

Exclusive Unboxing: HRSJ Vision Phone

Dont ask us how, but we managed to get our hands on Hua Rong Su Jiao (HRSJ)s new Vision Phone. Nicknamed the Beautiful Girl, due to the numerous elegantly dressed models on the packaging, this handset really managed to wow the crowds at this years CTIA convention in Las Vegas–quite a feat for a previously unknown Chinese electronics manufacturer.

The handsets unique design and light weight (roughly 1.1 ounces) should make the phone one of the most popular phones of 2009. For the more environmentally concerned, the Vision also has one of the lowest power-consumption rates on the market and is 100 percent recyclable.

No word yet on pricing or carrier availability. Our lead mobile analyst will be doing an extensive hands-on review of the new phone, as soon as he gets back from CTIA. In the meantime, check some shots of the unboxing process, after the jump.

Dell Studio XPS 13 unboxing and hands-on

We finally managed to wrestle one of the sleek Studio XPSs from Dell’s mitts, and we’ve got the pics to prove it. At first glance, the 13-inch laptop is striking, with its leather wrapped back and high gloss finish. However, we have a few minor quibbles that make the laptop a little less exciting than we’d hoped. Firstly, the leather is a bit rippled across the top — not a huge deal, but it skews the “design” aspect here. In a similar fashion, the super-glare display is just as distracting as it is on other screens of this type, and there seems to be another slight ripple — or wave — in the plastic (though this isn’t wholly uncommon). Once you open the box, you’re greeted to a matte, low-profile keyboard that feels terrific to the touch, though unfortunately the trackpad is not only minuscule in size, but located to the left of center, which makes no sense to us (especially on something of this size). For hands like ours, we found the experience to be a bit cramped. On the software side, the boot into Vista was certainly speedy, and though we had typical issues (crapware, pop-ups, general bugginess), the system still felt pretty snappy. We’re going to be taking a more in-depth look — especially at the capabilities of that NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G 9500M GPU — but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery below!

Update: Our mistake! We actually have the model with the 9500M GPU. Even better!

Gateway P-7808u FX gaming laptop unboxing and hands-on

The nice folks at Gateway were good enough to send over a fresh-out-of-the-oven P-7808u FX, their newest entry into a now-long lineage of gaming laptops. This $1699 machine replaces the similarly-priced P7811FX that we took a look at a few months ago and, like its older brother, packs some serious gaming-for-your-buck. Who are we to keep you from some delicious unboxing and hands-on dirtiness?

The latest FX sits in the same case as the P-7811 FX, including the gaudy black and orange effects that remind us of an 80s Chevy Monte Carlo (look it up, you’ll see what we mean). We’re ready for Gateway to leave this design behind — the FX deserves a new dress, because, really, she has a great personality. Gateway has kept the 5-in-1 multicard reader, HDMI port, triple USB 2.0 plugs, and handy eSATA port while adding a 9-cell battery that provides longer portable gaming time of around four hours. Don’t expect to throw this giant into a backpack any time soon, as the P-7808u FX weighs in at a bag-busting 9 pounds while a 17-inch widescreen monitor sits above a full-size keyboard complete with numpad.

iMac (early 2009) unboxing and hands-on

Just like the new Mac mini, the new iMac is the externally the same apart from the terribly sad swap of FireWire 400 for an additional USB port and the addition of mini DisplayPort, but inside things have been updated all around. We’re busy putting this 2.93GHz bad boy to the test as we speak, but in the meantime check out the unboxing below — and let us know if you find the tiny new keyboard super-cute or super-ridiculous, we’re on the fence.
