Nintedno 3DS Getting Netflix This Summer

3dshandsonfull.JPG3DS users will be able to stream Netflix via Wi-Fi connection this Summer, according Nintendo. The company added that free Wi-Fi hotspots will be available via AT&T starting this May. Gamers will have to sign up for a service called SpotPass, in order to connect automatically to the free hotspots.

Nintendo president Saturo Iwata stated this during his keynote speech,

Nintendo 3DS will be the most connected Nintendo device ever, with its ability to link people via local wireless connections, while at the same time connecting them to people and content worldwide via hotspot connectivity

It appears that Nintendo has big plans lined up for the new device. It makes me wonder if the older models will be phased out slowly? Or get huge price cuts sometime soon? Thus far, Nintendo has not issued any statements on the older models yet.

Sony NGP To Store Games On Memory Cards

Thumbnail image for ngp.jpgSony is readying the launch of the PSP’s succesor, the NGP. The forthcoming device will feature expandable storage. The cards will come in two sizes 2GB and 4GB. Each card will have a set amount of space for games, along with patches that likely will be released in the future.

In the future, Sony will offer larger capacity cards. The cards, Sony explained, will help take stress off the device’s internal memory. This new upgrade will also allow users to switch games to other devices with ease.

It looks like Sony is really getting serious about taking on Apple and Google. It’s about time. Will Microsoft join in soon? Xbox portable, anyone?

Microsoft Kills SideWinder Gaming Brand

SideWinder Gaming Peripherals

The Microsoft SideWinder series of gaming and high-end keyboards and mice have been around for a while, and made waves when they were introduced as an alternative to bigger names in the gaming peripheral market like Logitech and Saitek (now owned by MadCatz.) Now, Microsoft is expected to kill off the brand entirely and end the peripheral line that brought us solid keyboards like the SideWinder X6 and the original SideWinder gaming mouse.
According to a post at VR Zone, Microsoft is citing a far too crowded field in the PC peripheral market to keep up with the high-end brand, specifically from companies that specialize in peripherals like Logitech, Razer, and even SteelSeries.
It’s not the first time Microsoft has tried to wind down the SideWinder brand – back in 2003 the company stopped making new SideWinder peripherals due to flagging sales, but thanks to an agreement with Razer they brought the brand back in 2007. This time however, it doesn’t look like there’ll be anyone to save the peripheral line, and Microsoft hasn’t indicated they want it saved.

THQ Promotes Homefront with 10,000 Balloons, Angers Environmentalists

sf balloons.jpg

If you’re looking to draw the ire of environmentalists, there’s no better place to do it than in San Francisco–and really, there are few more immediately visible ways to do so than releasing 10,000 brightly-colored balloons into the sky. It was all part of a promotion stunt for THQ’s upcoming Homefront game.

THQ released the balloons yesterday, during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, immediately landing itself on the s-list of pretty much every environmentalist in the Bay Area. Here’s a quote from Rod Fujita, an oceans scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund, that about sums it up, “When I looked out the window and saw thousands of balloons dropping straight into the bay, I was flabbergasted. I never expected to see something like this in San Francisco, where there’s such concern about the bay and pollution.”
THQ released the 10,000 read “messages of hope” to “simulate a method used by South Korea to send messages of hope to the North.” The balloons rose and the dropped almost immediately into the bay, thanks to rainy weather.
Complaints quickly put the game company on the defensive. THQ insisted that the balloons, “were made from a 100 percent organic product and are 100 percent biodegradable.”

Nintendo 3DS Getting Mario Title

super_mario_movie.jpg

But you knew that already. After all, what’s a Nintendo console without an overweight plumber, right? Nintendo president President Satoru Iwata announced that Mario would indeed be getting his own seemingly inevitable title for the glasses-free 3D portable gaming console, during a keynote at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Details are pretty scare about the game, which unfortunately, won’t be among the launch titles when the console hits store shelves later this month, but Nintendo has promised that it will feature “traditional Mario gameplay,” which is probably a good thing. Sounds like sidescrolling to us, but who knows.

After all Nintendo has also promised that it,

Will fulfil the dream of Nintendo video game designer (and Mario creator) Shigeru Miyamoto to bring true depth and distance into the game’s mechanics.

Designers involved with the two Super Mario Galaxy games will be working on the title, which will likely be unveiled over the summer at E3.

PlayStation 3 Banned In Europe

playstation-3.jpgSony’s PlayStation 3 was yanked from retail stores across Europe, after court in the Netherlands requested all shipments to be stopped until further notice. The decision is believed to be fallout from a dispute between Sony and LG.

The two companies have have been duking it out over the PlayStation Blu-ray disc playback feature. On this side of the pond, Sony is suing over LG phones. Both companies claim that the other is infringing on patents.

This is part of a new set of lawsuits over patent infringement in the past couple of weeks. Sony has issued a public statement over the suit, saying that it is currently looking into the matter. LG, on the other hand, has not yet issued a response.

Can 3D Gaming Save Nintendo?

3dshandsonfull.JPGNintendo has been a longtime favorite for gamers ever since Nintendo released the NES. However, since more video game console manufactures have gained popularity, the stakes are as high as ever for Nintendo. The company is now saying that all hope is on the new Nintendo 3DS console.

Shigeru Miyamoto, who is considered to be one of Nintendo’s best (created Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda, to name a few), is excited about 3D gaming. Miyamoto believes that Nintendo can take 3D to the next level by planning to release games that could boost the declining profits for the gaming giant. The 3DS is the first console to ever support 3D games. Miyomoto also believes that Nintendo could change the face of gaming, just like the Wii did with motion gaming.

While Miyamoto does believe that it could change gaming, he also admits that 3D is nothing new to the world. However, we can all agree that it is new to gaming. He also stressed that Nintendo, unlike other gaming manufactures, design games for the hardware that Nintendo builds. According to Miyamoto, that gives Nintendo a better edge against the others.

One-Third of Growunups Play Mobile Games

The revolution will be downloaded. And it will involve plants. And zombies. And pissed off little birds being slingshotted at pigs. According to a recent study, more than a third of adults in the US and UK have fessed up to playing mobile games.

The mobile platform has eclipsed both PC and console gaming, in terms of populatiry amongst adults. Not surprisingly, the majority of the games being played by this ever-increasing demographic fall squarely into the casual category. The survey, incidentally, was commissioned by PopCap Games, the publisher behind the popular (casual) Plants vs. Zombies.

More than half of the 2,425 people studied copped to having had played a game on their phone. Thirty-three percent admitted to having played one in the past month. The number, not surprisingly, was considerable higher amongst smartphone owners, with 83 percent having had played a game on their handset in the past week.

Radeon HD 6990 pictured, GeForce GTX 590 rumored for PAX East 2011 reveal

Multiple cores are old hat, particularly in the GPU world where you can have hundreds of simultaneous processing units working in concert, but multiple GPUs on the same PCB, that’s still exciting territory (not least because of the crazy thermal and power requirements that go with it). AMD and NVIDIA are set to clash horns on this field of battle once again, fishing for mindshare as much as they are for high premium sales, with the Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590, respectively. The former has already slipped out of the shadows of mystery to reveal a size slightly longer than an A4 sheet of paper, while the latter is being rumored for an unveiling at the PAX East 2011 gamer gathering. Expected GTX 590 specs include 1024 total CUDA cores, 3GB of onboard RAM with dual 384-bit memory controllers, and three DVI outputs for some single-card 3D Vision Surround gaming. This year’s PAX East is kicking off on March 11th and AMD is also looking very close to launching its part, so you should need no more than a couple of weeks’ worth of patience before everything about the latest and greatest from both camps is known.

Nintendo 3DS Top-Selling Title: Professor Layton

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle.jpg

Nintendo’s official figures put the Nintendo 3DS at 400,000 units sold during its Japanese launch–other folks are estimating sales a bit lower (around 371,000, according to one source). Whatever the case my be, one title seems to be standing head and shoulders over the rest.

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, the latest in a line of puzzle games that have proven massively popular in their native Japan, is topping the list at 117,589 units sold. That’s roughly one-third or one-fourth of the number of 3DS devices sold, depending on who you ask.
By most accounts, however, the launch selection for the portable platform was fairly lackluster, with Nintendogs + Cats serving as the other front runner. The U.S. launch selection looks a bit more promising, thankfully, with 18 titles. For those eager to see what all the fuss is about, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle will be coming to North American 3DSes, though not at launch.
