PSP Go Prices Slashed

psp_go4.jpg

Sony’s PSP Go suffered no shortage of hype before it launched. The device is slick, slim, and generally cool looking–and the company seemed sure that it would help breathe life into a portable gaming platform that was struggle to keep its head above water in the fight against Nintendo’s perennially popular DS.

Since its launch back in early October of last year, however, the device has failed to catch fire. Reviews and sales have been uniformly disappointing. Sony is celebrating a late birthday for the device by slashing prices in the US and Japan.

The price in the device’s native Japan has been dropped from 26,800 ($332) to 16,800 yen. In the US, the price has dropped to $199 from $249.

More news from BlizzCon in Anaheim. While premium peripheral-maker SteelSeries unveiled its Cataclysm MMO Gaming Mouse last week, it has now added to the line with three mouse pads and a Cataclysm-themed keyset for the SteelSeries Shift gaming keyboard.

The mouse pads are named Deathwing, Goblin, and Worgen, and measure 10.8 x 12.6 x 0.1 in. SteelSeries promises that they’re made of high-quality cloth with an optimized textured surface. They also offer a non-slip rubber base. The Cataclysm keyset gives gamers an intuitive layout of the most common commands, actions, and emotes. It can be purchased on its own or bundled with the SteelSeries Shift keyboard. Pricing and availability haven’t been announced yet, but customers can sign up for notification. Sony PlayStation Move Controllers.jpg

The video game industry–long considered one of the few bright spots in an ailing economy–has stumbled a bit in recent months. As we head toward the holidays, the whole thing has been looking pretty dire.

The news isn’t all bad for the three major consoles, however. Sony has scored a big success with the Move–the company’s motion controller answer to products like the Nintendo Wiimote and Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360.

The $50 device has sold more than 2.5 million units, worldwide, since launching on September 19th. That number includes one million in the US and Canada and 1.5 million in Europe–the controller has yet to launch in Asia.

Sony is reportedly running low on stock of the product. “There’s minimal on-hand inventory in many stores,” the company’s director of hardware marketing John Koller told The LA Times. “We’re basically shipping every unit we can make.”

The blitz is about to begin. Gaming fans have descended on Anaheim for the fifth annual BlizzCon, a celebration of all things Blizzard Entertainment, including Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo. According to the show’s organizers, 30,000 attendees are expected at this year’s event.

Highlights for this year’s two-day event (October 22nd and 23rd) include a keynote by Blizzard president and co-founder Mike Morhaime, a StarCraft II competition, and a variety of panels discussing tools, tips, and some behind the scene views of Blizzard’s titles. Comedy music duo Tenacious D will close the event. They’re in good company–Ozzy played last year’s show.

And then there are the lines–“the most epic thing about BlizzCon,” according to Joystiq. Attendees reportedly began lining up at 2AM this morning, to beat the crowds.

For the low, low price of $800 you can buy this one of a kind piece of furniture, which even has storage space for your actual game systems.

Super Mario 25: The Many Faces of Mario

mario-raccoon.gif

Hard to believe, but if Super Mario Bros. was a person, it would be able to legally rent a car. Now, as anyone who has ever played the various iterations of Super Mario Kart can tell you, such a scenario would be an insurance nightmare of the first degree, but the point is, it’s a pretty important milestone for the portly little plumber who has brought the video gaming public so much joy over the years.

Nintendo is celebrating the event with a terrific 25 Years of Super Mario Bros. site and a red limit-edition Wii, set to be released in the States next month. We thought we’d pay tribute in our own way, by taking a look at how Mario Mario has evolved over the quarter-century.

This isn’t a complete catalog of every appearance–he’s appeared in more than 200 games overall–it’s more of a highlight reel. You can pick the soundtrack. Might we suggest this?

Red Wii Coming to US for Mario’s 25th

Red Nintendo Wii

Did you experience some limited edition jealously when Nintendo unveiled the red Wii for Japanese customers only, earlier this month? Good news, the edition just became little less limited. Nintendo this week announced that the red Wii–manufactured to mark the 25th anniversary of the first Super Mario game–will be hitting our shores next month.

The console is set to go on sale on November 7th for $199–it’s one of those “while supplies last” sort of deals. The console comes bundled with a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports, a Wii Remote Plus, and a red Wiimote.

Nintendo also announced the upcoming availability of a DSi XL bundle featuring Mario Kart DS, plus the pre-loaded titles Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math, and Photo Clock.

Angry Birds Halloween Comes to iPhone, iPad

angr_birds_halloween.jpg

The only thing scary about the latest game from Rovio is the sheer number of hours you’re going to lose before October 31st. The latest game from EA-owned mobile app maker is a holiday spin on the company’s ultra-popular Angry Birds title.

The game, available now for the iPhone, iPad Touch, and iPad (not Android, sadly), features 45 levels of familiar sling shot pig smashing, with some Halloween themed scenery (full moons, dead trees, lots of orange and black) and plenty of pumpkins thrown in

The iPhone version is $0.99 and the hi-def iPad download is $1.99–both are available now from the iTunes App Store.

SteelSeries Offers Gaming Glasses

scope.jpg

It used to be that a fast mouse was enough, then you needed a gaming keyboard and a super-slick mouse mat. Now the serious gamer also needs gaming glasses to keep their eyes feeling fine. SteelSeries has partnered with Gunnar Optiks to produce the SteelSeries Scope. Designed to improve visual efficiency, reduce eyestrain, and improve contrast during gaming sessions, they sound like a must-have. They’re built with large lenses to support peripheral vision, as well as a flat temple so they’re comfortable when you’re wearing a gaming headset. Gunnar’s proprietary i-Amp lens technology delivers a lens tint that optimizes contrast, an anti-glare coating, and light, ergonomic lenses.

If you’re at BlizzCon this weekend, you can be one of the first to try them on. Visit the SteelSeries Booth. You can also pick up a pair now from SteelSeries.com.
