Razer DeathAdder Gets an Upgrade

RazerDeathAdder.jpg

You can deal with your virtual enemies a little more effectively now, because Razer, the leading gaming peripheral company, has just upgraded its best-selling DeathAdder mouse.

Gamers will enjoy even more precise movements now that the DeathAdder has a 3.5G 3500dpi infrared sensor. Gaming mice are always corded so there’s no lag time, and the mouse also features an improved tangle-free braided cable.

What Razer didn’t change was the comfortable design. The DeathAdder is still a perfectly molded right-handed mouse with five programmable “Hyperesponse” buttons, on-the-fly sensitivity adjustments, an always-on mode, and super-slick Teflon feet. The improved DeathAdder sells for $59.99.

Nintendo Wii Price Cut Official, Sony Follows Suit With Japanese PSP

Nintendo this morning made official its long awaited price cut for the Wii. The popular–if blunted–console will be getting its first ever price drop this Sunday, when the system will go for $200.

After having recently dropped the price of its own flagship console, the PS3, Sony is also lowering the price of its portable PSP by 15-percent in Japan. The handheld will sell for 16,800 yen ($185) in that country. No word whether the US will see a similar price cut.

Best Buy Internal Memo Confirms Wii $199 Price Drop

An internal memo floating around from the good folks at Best Buy seems to confirm all of those upcoming rumors about a Wii price drop. The drop, according to the statement, is set to be officially announced by Nintendo on Friday, and carried out by Best Buy and the rest of the retail world on Sunday.

The console’s price will be set at $199.99, down from its long time price of $249.99, which should help keep the popular console competitive in an economic environment that’s finally begun taking its toll on the gaming industry.

Square Enix CEO: Nintendo Wii Successor Arriving in 2011

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada spoke to this press this week, just ahead of the upcoming Tokyo game show, happily making all manner of predictions regarding the future of the industry. Most interesting was the executive’s speculations about Nintendo.

Wada told the Financial Times that he expects Nintendo to release a followup to the Wii by 2011. The new console will take a decidedly different approach to the Wii’s stripped-down simplicity, adding some of the multimedia functionality found in the Xbox 360 and PS3. The console may also feature a different controller than the popular Wiimote.

Nothing too bold in these predictions, sure, but there’s a certain validity to such claims, based on Square Enix’s long working relationship with Nintendo.

Louisville Slugger Intros Wii Controller

The Nintendo Wii has long been an accident waiting to happen. When the console first launched, there were a plethora of reports about shattered windows and TV sets, caused by Wiimotes slipping out of users’ hands. The advent of controller add-ons has only made matters worse. Add the new Louisville Slugger-branded baseball bat attachment to the list of potentially disastrous add-ons.

The attachment is a mini-wooden bat with a case that users slip the Wiimote into at one end. The “bat” is 15.5 inches long and, thankfully, made of foam. It’s compatible with all the big Wii baseball games, including Major League Baseball 2K9, The Bigs2, and MLB Power Pros.

The controller will be available in mid-October for $14.99. That’s plenty of time to buy a nice foam helmet.

Rock Band Bar Nights encourages sloppy thrashing in watering holes

There are a few things you should generally avoid whilst inebriated in a bar: saying something offensive to someone larger than you is one, and attempting to play a song with any accuracy is another (see dude on left for proof). Regardless of the facts, MTV Games and Harmonix are looking to capitalize on the raging success that is Rock Band by introducing Rock Band Bar Nights. Said program hooks registered watering holes up with “everything from exclusive Rock Band product offerings to multiplatform marketing support,” and venues that sign up will also have access to an exclusive e-commerce store. Finally, those that register prior to September 8th will get a five-song preview disc from The Beatles: Rock Band, giving you serious motivation to get your local pub invested in the initiative. Just be sure to avoid “Expert” after the eighth White Russian, cool?

Report: Gamers are Fat and Sad

I’ve got some news. Are you sitting down? If you’re a gamer, the answer is almost certainly “yes.” According to a recent survey by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, and Andrews University, the average American game is 35, fat, and depressed. Wait, that can’t be right…

The study, culled from 552-Seattle area residents aged 19 to 90, discovered that, on average, gamers weigh more and have “a greater number of poor mental health days” than non-gamers. Researchers who conducted the study for The American Journal of Preventive Medicine claim it “reveal[s] important patterns in health-related correlates of video-game playing and highlights avenues for future research.”

Jeez, where’s Dr. Mario when you need him?

Redbox debuts $2 video game rentals, pretty lean on titles thus far

If you’ve been waiting expectantly for Redbox to launch its much dreamed-of video game rentals kiosks — well, dream no more. Word has come down from on high that it’s happened, and we’ll tell you: we couldn’t be more pleased. For $2 a night (which isn’t really a great premium compared to Blockbuster’s $9 for five nights), you can hit up the kiosk and grab games for Nintendo DS, Wii, PS2 and 3, and Xbox 360. Now — the game selections are really slim so far, but we’re pretty sure that situation will improve quickly, and the launch has only been rolled on in the Reno, Nevada area as of now. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for Redbox to make its way eastward soon.

Tony Hawk: RIDE makes official US debut on November 17th

Turns out GameStop’s October 13th listing for Tony Hawk: RIDE was just a hair off, to the tune of 36 days or so. Activison Blizzard’s sent word today that the skating simulator’s official North American launch is set for November 17th — plenty of time to practice your faux ollies before showing your family some virtual board skills over Thanksgiving meals. Additionally, Europe’s now official for November 20th, but we already heard that last week. No word on pricing, but across the pond, GAME.co.uk is pushing that £99 / $168 figure pretty hard, and while we’re willing to bet that’s the official Europe price, we’re not convinced that’s any indication of what we’ll be paying stateside.

Tony Hawk Ride Limited Edition skateboard outed as UK version gets priced and dated

While details aren’t 100 percent confirmed for those of us across the pond — Activision has yet to come out and verify those October 20th / $120 listingsTony Hawk Ride and its white not-quite-skateboard will be launching November 20th in the United Kingdom for £99.99, or about $168 in US currency. European retailer GAME will be selling a limited edition version of the game, which will sport a red and black skateboard and surprisingly no markup in price whatsoever. You know, it’s a good thing the console cycle seems to be extending beyond its formerly four-year pattern, because these plastic peripherals are gonna be doing a number on our bank accounts.
