ZTE Smart Tab 10 makes its way through FCC with Vodafone branding

Just three days ago, the ZTE Smart Tab 7 strolled through the FCC, flashing a Google-branded tramp stamp, and now its older sibling, the Smart Tab 10, is following suit. The probable 10-incher isn’t revealing a whole lot, but it does have the same Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G logos riding on its lower back. It’s also sporting what looks to be a back-facing camera in the upper-right corner, just like little sis. What’s more, this filing lists the tablet as the Vodafone Smart Tab 10, which further confirms our suspicions that this and the Smart Tab 7 are the same Honeycomb tablets announced by the carrier at IFA. Those slates are said to share a 1280 x 800 pixel screen, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor — and, of course, a thing for lower back tattoos.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S available now on Vodafone UK

Can’t wait for your high-speed Xperia Arc upgrade? Well, you’ll be glad to hear that Vodafone’s Xperia Arc S page has now gone live, and we’ve confirmed with the UK phone network that the curvy smartphone will also be available in-store from tomorrow. Signing up for a two year plan at £31 per month nets you the gradient blue version for free. Aside from a new super-charged 1.4GHz processor and a “3D sweep panorama” mode, other specs are all-but identical to the original. Certainly not a deal-breaker, with an Exmor-equipped 8.1 megapixel shooter and that 4.2-inch Reality Display both squeezed into its very pocketable profile. So, please form a orderly queue at your nearest Vodafone store if that sounds like your thing — or you could just click on the link below.

ZTE Smart Tab 7 reveals its Google back tattoo for the FCC

Another day, another Android tablet on the FCC’s site. This is the ZTE Smart Tab 7 — or the back of it, at least. We don’t know a lot about the tablet, beyond what’s available in the above drawing, including the Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G logos. It’s also rocking the Google tramp stamp on its lower back and what appears to be a rear-facing camera at the top. Judging from the chosen name, it seems likely that the device will offer up a 7-inch display, and given the recent announcement of the Vodafone Smart Tab 7 and Smart Tab 10 at IFA, we might be gawking at a rebranded version of that device for the States. Time shall tell, no?

Update: A tipster sent a link to this new tablet from ZTE. Could this Android 3.2 slate be the one in the above drawing? The similarities are certainly hard to deny.

Mobile Miscellany: week of September 12, 2011

This week was packed with news on the mobile front, so it was easy to miss a few stories here and there. Here’s some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of September 12, 2011:

  • Vodacom South Africa has joined the data throttling club, though this carrier is taking a slightly different spin: BlackBerry users consuming more than 100MB of data each month will find their download speeds downgraded to GPRS or EDGE. The company claims this will only affect less than five percent of its BlackBerry customers. [via N4BB]
  • Bada fans: the Samsung Wave 578 is featured on Orange’s site as “coming soon.” [via The Inquirer]
  • Motorola announced the availability of the Fire and Fire XT in India this week. [via Motorola]
  • The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is now being sold at Vodafone UK. [via Vodafone]
  • Parrot announced the most recent addition to its lineup of Bluetooth products, called the Minikit+, a refresh of its popular hands-free speakerphone. The new model offers simultaneous pairing and voice commands. [via Parrot]
  • Research in Motion is hoping to put the NFC functionality in OS 7 to good use, as it announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9330 as well as the Curve 9350 / 9360 will support HID’s iCLASS digital keys, which means corporate folks will able to use their smartphone as an access card. [via PhoneScoop]
  • While digging through the Droid Bionic’s webtop app, the names of two unknown Motorola phones were discovered: the Edison and the Common. Little is known about the Common, but a recent FCC filing mentioned the Edison and is speculated to be the follow-up to the Atrix, albeit sans LTE as originally hoped. [via Droid-Life]
  • The manager of the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, Matt Bencke, wrote a post pleading developers to submit their Mango-compatible apps as soon as possible, as the new update is coming to existing phones soon and it’s obviously very important to have Windows Phone 7.5 run as smooth as possible. [via WMPowerUser]
  • A leaked Radio Shack roadmap indicates the HTC Vigor should be available in stores by October 20th, and the QWERTY-packing Samsung Stratosphere will be up for online ordering as early as October 6th. As this is a third-party retailer, we can’t say with surety that these dates reflect the carrier’s official release. [via Droid-Life]

Samsung Galaxy Y coming soon to Vodafone UK’s budget lineup

The Samsung Galaxy Y recently appeared on Vodafone’s “Coming Soon” page, where Sammy’s youth-oriented smartphone will look to carve a niche among the UK carrier’s value options. While the handset compares favorably to the current bottom-of-the-line Galaxy Mini (free on all contracts over £13 per month), the low-res QVGA display makes it a timid competitor to better-equipped options such as the Wildfire S and Xperia Mini Pro (both free on all contracts over £20.50 per month). Along with a Gingerbread OS and an 832MHz CPU, you’ll find a 2 megapixel camera and the usual assortment of 802.11n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. Neither pricing nor a release date have been announced, which will certainly determine much of the Galaxy Y’s fate. So, Vodafone, how low can you go?

Vodafone Xone R&D center opens its doors in Silicon Valley, wants to help startups grow

Verizon’s doing it, so why not Vodafone too? That’s right, folks, the big red telco from abroad has decided to get into the swing of things in Silicon Valley with its new Vodafone Xone R&D center in Redwood City, California. Unlike VZW’s Application Innovation Center just a few miles north in San Francisco, the Xone is focused on identifying startups with potential and putting their ideas on the fast track to proof-of-concept trials. In order to do so, the center provides technical expertise, business advice and access to its lab to ensure that products are compatible with Vodafone’s global 2G, HSPA, and LTE networks. This R&D center is also aligned with Verizon’s facility in Massachusetts, so budding entrepreneurs have access to stateside LTE infrastructure, too. We got a chance to check out the new business incubator ourselves, so read on for more.

White Galaxy S II lands at Vodafone, ignores post-Labor Day etiquette

Summer may have drawn to an unofficial close, but that clearly hasn’t stopped the Galaxy S II from wearing all white. Today, the albino version of Samsung’s Gingerbread handset officially made its way to Vodafone, just a few days after launching in the UK and more than a month after leaking in “official looking” images. The blanched, 4.3-inch smartphone is available for free with a two-year, £36 per month price plan (roughly equivalent to $58 per month), though it’s still unclear whether it’ll be making its way stateside anytime soon. If you’re looking to brighten up your pocket, you can grab your own at the source link below.

LG Optimus Sol hands-on

The Nokia 500 wasn’t the only fresh handset that popped up at the Vodafone booth here at IFA, this morning. We also managed to sneak in some time with the Optimus Sol. The device is reasonably slick for what the company appears to be framing as a relatively low-end phone. At its center is a bright, glossy 3.8-inch Super Amoled display.

The Sol runs Android 2.3 with a single-core 1GHz processor — which the company points out should be fine for those not doing heavy duty work on the thing. It certainly handled what we could throw at it during our hands-on time. The handset is thin and is reasonably light, compared to the Optimus 2x, which aside from the large four-inch display, looks fairly similar. It should be coming very soon — some time later this month, most likely, for Vodafone users here in Germany. According to an LG representative, it should run roughly €300 off-contract.

Nokia 500 hands-on

What’s this, then? It’s the Nokia 500, hanging out in the Vodafone booth. The 3.2-inch handset is awaiting an official release on the European carrier, which should be hitting around the October time frame here in Germany, according the rep we spoke with. Still no word on pricing from the carrier, but it was suggested to us that the handset would likely run €99 or less, on contract. We managed to get some hands-on time with the Symbian Anna handset, and can’t say we were all that impressed by the hardware on what feels like a relatively low end phone for Nokia, a company that has offered up some of the best hardware designs in the business.

The screen feels quite narrow, and the device itself a bit chunky. The phone has 256MB of RAM and a 1GHz processor, which do the job reasonably well, though the Anna interface will likely leave something to be desired for many smartphone users. There’s also a five megapixel rear-facing camera and an microSD slot — oh, and the rep we spoke with seemed particularly excited about the different color back plates, which will be available for the phone.

It’s not the most exciting phone out there from the Finnish handset maker, but for those looking for a relatively low-cost smartphone from the company, the 500 certainly gets the job done.

Nokia N9 coming to Australia in October on three carriers

The Nokia N9 will be considered a rarity in the US, UK and Germany when it’s released, but at least fans Down Under won’t have to look very far to get their hands on one. Espoo’s officially announced its intention of selling the MeeGo device on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, in addition to distributing it through several major retailers. Look for the one-of-a-kind handset to make its way to Australia in October for roughly $850; those who opt for the 16GB model will be able to choose from black, blue and pink, whereas the 64GB version will only be made available in black. Full presser can be found below.
