Video of the Day: Frozen in Grand Central Station

This article was written on February 21, 2008 by CyberNet.

For you enjoyment, the YouTube Video of the day:

Now this is what you call a prank! And what a perfect place to pull such a prank in busy Grand Central Station in New York. Those who weren’t part of the act were obviously confused and couldn’t figure out what was going on. Whoever thought up this one, what an idea!

Play Games with Friends Using Meebo!

This article was written on November 20, 2007 by CyberNet.

It was just last month when Meebo opened their platform to third party developers and already, the first big batch of games have launched.  There are over twenty different games available like classic Checkers, Reversi, Connect 4, and more. Venture Beat calls this an “ambitious move” which it certainly is, and one that will cause “the rest of us” to hear about what a great service is out there. I always thought it was a great idea when Microsoft implemented games into their Messenger, but it’s even more impressive that Meebo has done it with a web-based chat service. Instead of playing games with strangers, you get to play games with your friends.

meebo games

To access the games, look for the image of a rocket at the top of your chat window and click on it. To the right of the window, a list of games will appear which is shown above. Once you select a game, it will load and you’ll be able to play with someone on your chat list.

Meebo offers a pretty decent incentive to developers of all applications including games which is nice.  Developers can either choose to sell their own ads for their applications (which could potentially result in 100% profit for them), or they can allow Meebo to deliver the ads and share the revenue 50/50. Either way, developers will be making money off of something that they made which is probably enough incentive to continuing developing more applications just for Meebo.

Given the huge progress Meebo has made since they launched, especially over the last few months, I can only imagine what will be next!

Helpful Tip: How to Report a Phishing Email

This article was written on November 24, 2007 by CyberNet.

It seems like I’ve been getting an unusually large number of phishing emails lately, and I’ve began wondering whether everyone realizes how they can report phishing emails with their email provider. This article will highlight what phishing is, and why/how to properly report it.

What is a phishing email? I thought Wikipedia did a pretty good job of describing it:

Phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. eBay, PayPal and online banks are common targets.

A lot of people confuse these messages with spam, and when I asked a few people whether they report the phishing emails they all said yes. When I showed them how to do it the general response was “ohhhhh.” It turns out that all of them, some of which were computer savvy, just report these emails as spam without realizing that there are separate options for reporting phishing.

The reason why it is important to correctly report phishing emails is that warnings messages are more prominently displayed for other users. This is what a phishing email looks like in Gmail:

Gmail Phishing Warning

Now that you know what phishing is and why to properly report it, lets take a look at how you go about doing so in Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Windows Live Hotmail.

–Gmail–

Gmail is pretty easy because you just have to use the drop-down arrow located in the upper-right corner of each message. When you click it there will be an option labeled Report Phishing towards the end of the list:

Gmail Report Phishing

–Yahoo! Mail–

Unfortunately Yahoo! Mail doesn’t have a built-in feature for reporting phishing emails, but they recommend that you forward the email in question to phishing@cc.yahoo-inc.com so that it can be analyzed. You can also report the phishing website to Yahoo! using this form.

–Windows Live Hotmail–

When you click on the Junk option in Windows Live Hotmail there will be a Report phishing scam option located at the bottom of the list:

Pirate Bay in Trouble Again?

This article was written on February 01, 2008 by CyberNet.

Pirate Bay Sinking The Pirate Bay is a torrent site that has been through just about everything you can imagine, and yet the site is still available. Now they are jumping through some hoops again, and this time there are four workers being charged with “assisted copyright infringement“. If they are found guilty they could possibly spend up to 2 years in jail, but the crew has already said that the site will stay alive regardless. The people going after them are none other than Warner, MGM, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox Films, Sony BMG, Universal and EMI.

I wonder how far this “assisted copyright infringement” can be stretched. For example, if I know someone looking to download a song and I tell them to go download it from the BitTorrent network then technically I am assisting in copyright infringement. Are there going to be spies walking around trying to get people to recommend download music and movies illegally? When will the madness end?

Here’s what the Pirate Bay had to say about the trial:

In case we lose the pending trial (yeah right) there will still not be any changes to the site. The Pirate Bay will keep operating just as always. We’ve been here for years and we will be here many more.

It also came to our attention that it’s now possible to buy the documents, from the police!, in the current investigation about The Pirate Bay. But only on paper. And it’s not 4000 pages, it 4620 pages. And they cost 6050 SEK for all of them (about 1000 USD). Our view of it? Why not just make a PDF, make a torrent of the PDF and seed it. We know a perfect place you can do that for free, and nobody would have to pay for all those pages of investigation. And a hell of a lot of trees would be saved… And even though the information in the investigation might be a bit personal at times (alcohol intake, sex addictions) we’re not suing the police for commercially exploiting the material they took from us without permission.

How Does The Pirate Bay Really Feel About The MPAA

This article was written on August 19, 2006 by CyberNet.

Pirate Bay LogoBy now we all know that The Pirate Bay isn’t too fond of the MPAA but someone found out how they really feel about them. By doing a traceroute on thepiratebay.org the last result will come up with a very unique host name.

So what could they say that would be so funny? I am sure anything they say would give you a good chuckle but I think their choice of words really expresses their feelings. Either checkout the traceroute yourself and look at the last result or you can cheat and just look here:

CyberNotes: Create Stories out of your Images with BubbleShare

This article was written on February 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

CyberNotes
Weekend Website

One of the most popular things to do over the web is share photos, which people do through social networks, blogs, and emails. BubbleShare is an online service that enhances the photo-sharing experience by helping you create stories out of your images that you can share with others. Or as they say it, “Tell you story, you way, instantly.”

–Why I like It–

I was just introduced to BubbleShare recently, and after playing around with it for a while, it will probably be one of those sites I actually use.  Here’s why I like it:

  • No registration required to view images
  • No software downloads are needed to create a new album
  • It’s free!
  • You can tag photos.

-How it works–

It’s actually a very simple process.  If you’re wanting to create an album, first you’ll need to create an account. It only takes a few minutes, and then you’ll be right on your way.  First you’ll upload your photos. By clicking “new album,” you’ll be guided through the process.  When I was creating an album, I just control clicked to select all of my pictures out of my picture folder, and then clicked upload.  This made it a one-click, simple process.

You’re not required to resize your photos like some services, but keep in mind that if you have a high resolution camera, it could potentially take a while for all of your images to upload.  While you’re waiting for all of your images to upload, you’ll be shown the status.  It will give you the percent completed, and how many bytes it currently has uploaded.

After your pictures are uploaded, you’ll get an email with the link to the album when it’s complete.  This is nice because you could get the upload process started, walk away for a while, and come back when it’s done.

From there, you’re left to fill the album with creativity by adding comments, clipart, or even snippets of your voice narrating the pictures.  You’ll receive a private link for your album so that you can pass it out to friends and family who will be able to view your creation.

This album is powered by
BubbleShare
Add to my blog

-Features/Community–

Being that it is a Web 2.0 site, they have that community aspect that shows different album’s that have been created. You’re given the choice of whether or not you want to share your album with the community, which is nice.

Features that you’ll probably like:

  • Add clipart to your photos.  The selection is very limited, but hopefully they will be expanding that.
  • Caption bubbles – They offer a few different styles of bubbles that you can drag anywhere on a photo to add your own captions.
  • Audio captions – Record a 30 second audio clip to attach to  the photos in your story!

Sharing your photos is the point of BubbleShare, so they make this process easy to do.  You can place HTML code into blogs, websites, or social networks like Hi5, MySpace, Xanga, Live Journal, Friendster, etc.  You can also share by email, as mentioned.  All you have to do is enter in the email addresses of the people you’d like to share the album with, and BubbleShare will send them a link.

–Keep in mind–

Keep in mind that photos are shared in low resolution, and they include a row of text ads. The good news is that the ads aren’t very obtrusive, and at some point, they plan on offering a premium service. Your photos will be stored for one year, and then you’ll need to renew the album. It’s free to renew, and would be available again for another year.

If you share photos with family and friends often, this is a great solution, especially if you typically share them via email.  When you share pictures via email, it takes time both on your end (for you to upload) and then on their end (to download).  While it may take you a decent amount of time to get all of your high-resolution pictures uploaded to BubbleShare, there won’t be any delay for those whom you’re sharing your photos with.  It’s a simple, easy sharing process.

I put together a quick demonstration that gives you a small idea of what you can do. The pictures are from a Chicago Cubs/ Milwaukee Brewers Baseball game that I went to a couple of years ago. I didn’t add any voice narration to it, but that’s something that you could easily do.

When you’re wanting to display your images on a blog , or other website, they give you a few different options for display, including choices for the size from small to large :

  1. Gizmo player – the person viewing has control over when to view the next picture, or if they want the slide show to play.
  2. Bubble Slider – this displays your pictures in a horizontal slide show.
  3. Vertical Slider
  4. Bouncy Animation – Adds a little bounce to your pictures.

I think that’s about all there is to it! It’s a very simple process that would be easy for anyone to understand, and it’s a good way to share photos with friends and family. Visit BubbleShare here to get started!

Update:
After finishing this post and uploading it, I realized that all my special effects like the clipart and text bubbles don’t work after inserting the HTML for the photo viewer. A little bummed, and still trying to figure out why…

The Pirate Bay Ready to Launch Video Streaming Site?

This article was written on May 18, 2007 by CyberNet.

Video BayThe Pirate Bay made an official announcement today that there is still something big coming, and it isn’t related to the Playble.com! Instead, the new site will be a video streaming site comparable to what YouTube, Google Video, and MetaCafe all offer:

But, as a treat I can tell you – YES – we’re going to do a video streaming site. It’s true. It’s in the works being done right now and as usual we put a bit of Pirate Bay mentality behind every project we do.

Torrent Freak, being on top of all torrent-related news, managed to scrounge up the URL for the site: http://thevideobay.org/. From the looks of it The Pirate Bay is sticking with their own fashion for naming things by cleverly calling it The Video Bay. Unfortunately when visiting the site all that we see for the time being is:

only open for beta- and dev-testers.
some is live, most is not. we will open for public when done.

So why would The Pirate Bay try to compete in an already saturated market? It took me a few seconds to realize it, but then it clicked…they more than likely won’t pull the copyrighted content that gets posted. I guess that goes along with their “Pirate Bay mentality” that they referred to in their announcement. I’m sure movies and television shows alike will be plastered all over the site.

I think every organization and company that offers any digital content has tried to threaten The Pirate Bay, but they post all of their legal threats as if they are jokes. Once The Video Bay launches, it could serve as the one-stop-shop for all of your copyrighted video needs. Now all we can do is sit and twiddle our thumbs until we can see what they really have up their sleeve for their streaming video site.

Windows Live Hotmail to Launch Soon

This article was written on April 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

According to BetaNews, Microsoft is preparing to launch their Windows Live Hotmail service in the United States sometime in May.  It has already been launched in India and Belguim, and other countries like France and the UK should expect it in the next few days.

When Microsoft decided to create a new mail service, it started as Windows Live Mail.  Then in February, they made the announcement that they were taking the best of both Worlds, and the final product would be Windows Live Hotmail.

RightclickmenuThe new service will look and act more like Outlook using an Ajax platform, a paneled interface, and right click menus. For example, you can right click on a message and get a menu of options like reply or delete.  I’ve been a part of the Beta for several months now, and the image to the right shows what the right-click menu looks like.  Windows users are accustomed to right-clicking, and incorporating this with an online service makes complete sense.

With Yahoo Mail Beta and Windows Live Hotmail taking the “Outlook” approach, there aren’t many notable online services left that have more of a “classic” email interface.

Hopefully this will lead to the @live.com addresses finally being released, although there haven’t been any hints that this will be coming.

NBC Comes Crawling Back to Apple

This article was written on January 21, 2008 by CyberNet.

Apple NBC Back in September when there was a ton of hype surrounding the new iPod Touch and the drop in price of the iPhone, there was also another big story over at Apple.  They announced that NBC didn’t intend to renew their contract with iTunes once their current contract ran out in December.  December came and went and sure enough, NBC didn’t renew their contract. Apparently the two couldn’t agree on a price, NBC wanted to charge double the price shows were being sold at while Apple wanted to drop the price.

Not even an entire month after NBC’s contract ended and the Financial Times is reporting that NBC’s CEO, Jeff Zucker, has patched relations with Apple. The Financial Times says:

Mr Zucker appears to have patched up relations with Apple after a pricing dispute last year led NBC to pull its shows from the iTunes digital media store. “We’ve said all along that we admire Apple, that we want to be in business with Apple,” he said. “We’re great fans of Steve Jobs.”

Apparently NBC is realizing that getting something instead of nothing is better when it comes to selling TV shows on iTunes, and it didn’t take them long to realize this. Apple sure does know how to stand their ground, don’t they?

Qtrax Offers Free Music Downloads… Hopefully!

This article was written on January 28, 2008 by CyberNet.

qtrax We all know people like free music and this was proven a few days ago when Last.fm launched their free on-demand streaming music service (with limits, of course).  They saw a HUGE spike in listeners, page views, and unique visitors shortly after it launched.  Knowing how much people love free music, it is then easy to understand why there has been so much hype surrounding a new start-up called Qtrax.  Qtrax uses the words “free” and “music” quite a bit on their site to describe “the worlds first, 100% legal and free Peer-2-Peer music application.” They were set to launch last night at midnight and early reports were praising the service to no end, especially since they said they had all 4 major record labels on board and more than 25 million songs to choose from.  All of the praises started to come to an end once people found out the real details…

As it turns out, the worlds first 100% legal and free Peer-2-Peer music application with all 4 majors on board actually doesn’t have all four on board. In fact, at this point, there are 0 major labels participating.  Webware says both Warner and Universal are in fact negotiating with Qtrax but that nothing was ironed out. Then BMG chimed in and said that they hadn’t set anything in-stone while EMI said there was no final agreement. At this point they haven’t launched the download yet and it could be another 24 hours before it is available. Another downside aside from the obvious is that when it does launch, songs will not be playable on the iPod or Mac Computers (yet).

Compensating artists would work as follows: Because users are required to use a special application, when you download and play the music, Qtrax can keep track. Money earned from the ads that you’d see in the application are then divvied out to the artists which you listen to for their work.

If Qtrax is actually able to get the four major record labels on board, this could be huge. But until they do, Qtrax is just another start-up with a lot of funding (30 million thus far).
