HP Mini 311 set for spec bump, Windows 7 Professional

With the overdue passing of Windows XP into the next world comes the cheery note that Microsoft’s ceiling on netbook specs will also be no more — and the Mini 311 is among the first to get upgraded in time for the new king of Windowstan. The already competent performer will be getting the full (non-LE) ION treatment, max memory of 3GB, an 80GB SSD option or up to 320GB of the old school storage stuff, and a choice of Windows 7 flavors up to the Professional level. This info comes from the machine’s maintenance guide, so we can’t be certain of when the upgrades will be ready for consumption, but HP’s track record would suggest the answer to that is soon.

Windows 7 sold early at college bookstore, order somehow maintained

Street dates are invariably broken somehow, somewhere even when it comes to the biggest products and companies, and Microsoft is certainly no exception, with it now able to chalk up at least one sold copy on the Windows 7 charts thanks to an exceptionally eager college bookstore. While it didn’t come in an actual retail box, this does indeed appear to be a legitimate education copy of the OS and, according to our tipster, it has been successfully activated. A little earlier than the usual slip-up to be sure, but we have a sneaking suspicion this won’t be the last copy that drops before the big October 22nd date. Feel free to let us know in comments if you happen to come across one.

European Commission likes Windows 7 browser ballot screen, will probably fine Microsoft anyway

European Commission likes Windows 7 browser ballot screen, will probably fine Microsoft anyway

Well, it took two months, but the European Commission has finally decided that Microsoft’s idea for a Windows 7 ballot screen, in which users pick which web browser they want installed, is acceptable, saying it’ll give users “an effective and unbiased choice between Internet Explorer and competing Web browsers.” Previously MS was working on a custom version of the OS for EU shores, called Windows 7 E, but nobody was particularly fond of that idea. We’re glad to see the European Commission and Microsoft finally starting to warm to each other — maybe money can buy you love.

Gateway introduces One ZX series of multitouch all-in-one desktops

It’s been done before by the likes of MSI and HP, but given the finger-friendly nature of Windows 7, we aren’t shocked at all to hear that Gateway’s getting in on the action. The splotchy PC maker is unveiling the One ZX lineup tonight, which will initially be comprised of the ZX6800 series and ZX4800 series. Both crews will ship with Win7, and Gateway’s hoping that you’ll fall in love with its custom suite of multitouch-supporting media management tools. If you’re curious about specs, the ZX6810-01 will include a 23-inch multitouch LCD (1,920 x 1,080), 2.33GHz Core 2 Quad Q8200S CPU, 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4670 GPU, 8GB of DDR3 memory, an 8x slot-loading DVD burner, a 1TB HDD (or 64GB SSD), WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, six USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA socket, bundled wireless keyboard and mouse, integrated HD webcam, a hybrid TV tuner and built-in speakers. The lower-end ZX4800-02 steps down to a 20-inch LCD (1,600 x 900), a 2.1GHz T4300 CPU, GMA X4500HD integrated graphics, 4GB of DDR2 RAM and a 750GB SATA HDD. Both lineups should be in US stores later this fall, with prices starting at $1,399.99 and $749.99, respectively.

Gateway’s Windows 7-boasting EC18T tablet images, specs leak onto the screen

Hey, what’s this attractive looking dude? Well, from the looks of it, it’s Gateway’s not-yet-announced or previously spied tablet PC. A tipster with access to a seemingly infinite number of photos of this bad boy also shot over a spec sheet of the purported EC18T, and here’s what we’re looking at. This 11.6-incher is going to boast an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a Mobile Intel GS45 Express graphics chipset, and it’ll run either Windows 7 Home Premium or Basic. Of course, none of this is official information, and we have no info on pricing or availability yet. Hit the gallery after the break for a plethora of photos.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

MSI GT640 houses Core i7, claims to be ‘world’s most powerful gaming notebook’

Man, Core i7 laptops just keep coming and coming (kinda like Arnold). The latest in what’s sure to be a torrent of companies upgrading their premier products to Intel’s finest quad-core battery killer is MSI, with the GT640. Though MSI hasn’t yet specified which of the trifecta of Clarksfield chips it has inside the machine, we do know there’s a 1GB NVIDIA Geforce GTS 250 taking care of graphics, as well as options for up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, half a terabyte of storage and a Blu-ray burner. Other notables include a two megapixel webcam, HDMI, 7.1 channel audio output and an eSATA input. While we don’t yet know the wallet damage for that red-striped aluminum alloy body, its Windows 7 installation would indicate a release some time around, oh, October 22 perhaps? One more shot of the keyboard and screen after the break.

[Via Laptoping]

Update: The German announcement for this machine has been more forthcoming with the details. There’s a 1680 x 1050 resolution, 4,800mAh battery and a two-year warranty among the things we didn’t know about before, and the most important thing, the CPU model, is now revealed as a 1.6GHz Core i7 720QM. [Thanks, Johannes]

XP Mode is ready, will be a free download on October 22

Microsoft Download Center, October 22 — add that to your already-busy Windows 7 release party itinerary. That’ll be the quickest and most painless way to enrich your hot new OS with the now finalized code for XP Mode, a virtualized Windows XP environment for those who just can’t let go of their legacy software. The solitary hitch is that you’ll need to have purchased a copy of Windows 7 Professional or higher to get in on the fun, but you already knew that, right? Oh, and you might also want to check that your hardware manufacturer hasn’t disabled virtualization as part of some overzealous security / party-pooping measure.

Video: BumpTop 1.2 with multitouch support available now

BumpTop 1.2 is now available, adding multitouch support to the already impressive list of features available for the 3D desktop. Check out the free download and you’ll soon be introduced to a host of new gestures, including the scrunch (where you can grab a handful of items and pull ’em into a pile), wall focus and rotate, and some quick and easy photo editing. As always, you can download the free version to get started, but if you want to take advantage of stuff like un-watermarked image previews and unlimited sticky notes, you’ll have to shell out $29 for the pro version. Sorry, Mac and Linux users — this is still a Windows-only affair. But we do have a video for you! You know where to find it — after the break, of course.

Windows 7 party pack fittingly arrives on party-filled Cayman Islands

Well, would you look at that? With the launch of Microsoft’s next operating system merely 21 days away (give or take a few hours based on time zone), the Redmond giant seems to be proactively sending out Win7 Launch Party packs already. The first “unboxing” we’ve seen comes to us from a most unusual spot, one that Microsoft wasn’t actually equipped to ship to when the program first started. After a stern email or two sent over several bodies of water and through countless Stimulus-inspired road construction hang-ups, the bundle you see laid out above landed in the beautiful Cayman Islands. Within was a Steve Ballmer Signature Edition of Win7 (so, we’re up to seven versions now?), a pack of Win7 playing cards, a poster, some napkins (to wipe the drool from your friends’ faces after they experience Aero Shake for the first time) and even a puzzle. So, should we book a flight to Grand Cayman, Little Cayman or Cayman Brac? This is one shindig we definitely won’t miss.

[Thanks, Jared]
