Lenovo’s all-business ThinkPad SL510 gets reviewed

Lenovo’s ThinkPad SL510 is just one of many new lappies hitting the market with Windows 7 in tow, but unlike most of the consumer-oriented machines, this pup is aimed squarely at that fellow over there looking mighty uncomfortable in the suit. Their test version, which included a 2.53GHz CPU, 3GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD and a $1,024 price tag, was found to be a real champion in terms of performance. The machine itself starts at just $520, and while the upgrades here definitely had an impact, they were also pleased with the multitouch trackpad, overall typing experience and bundled business tools. The only knocks? The “bulky, staid design” and low screen resolution, but something tells us a few of you won’t see the former as a negative. Hit the read link for the full skinny.

This was a big week for Microsoft, as Steve Ballmer took the stage in New York and formally introduced Windows 7 to the world. It was almost a little anti-climactic: the OS has been finished and shipped to OEMs for months, while developers and pretty much any enthusiast who wanted a copy has one by now. Still, this is the week that Microsoft takes the message and OS to the mass market and the PC holiday sales system formally kicks off. I’ve held back from writing about the OS for the most part, but here’s seven things about Windows 7 — three features that I think are over-hyped and four things that make 7 something worth purchasing, either as an upgrade or as part of a new PC.

Windows 7 student upgrade installer not working for many

The Windows 7 launch seems to have gone off mostly roses and sunbeams, but we’re hearing today that quite a few people have had issues installing the downloadable $29 student upgrade edition on 32-bit Vista — apparently the file doesn’t unpack to an ISO, but instead to an executable and two bundles that don’t function properly, and eventually the process errors out with a 64-bit app trying to launch on 32-bit systems. It’s possible to create an ISO using some hackery, but the install process seems to be 50/50 after that — we’ve heard of both success and further crashes. For it’s part, Microsoft says it’s looking into things, so hopefully a newly repackaged download will be forthcoming — every party has its ups and downs, right?

Update: Our friends at DownloadSquad have a handy guide to making the ISO, in case you’re interested — and they say the installer does work in the end.

Windows 7 Whopper claims its first victim (video)

Few brave souls will even attempt to consume the Windows 7 Whopper, and fewer still will achieve that first dyspepsic bite — as you can plainly see in this video. Indeed, we were sure that this was some sort of promotional stunt for Microsoft in Japan, but now reports are filtering in that these have been available in Texas for years now. Of course, in the Lone Star State it’s not called the Windows 7 Whopper, it’s called “lunch.”

Nokia Booklet 3G running Windows 7 Starter unwrapped at Best Buy

If your pulse is racing like Windows 7 on an Atom processor then this Nokia Booklet 3G is surely the cause. The premium netbook running Microsoft’s not so premium 32-bit, Aero-less Starter Edition OS (see the sticker?) is the first demo unit to arrive at Best Buy. Buyers better enjoy looking at that Windows flag ’cause with Starter, it’s the only wallpaper you’re ever going to get.

Apple will officially support Windows 7 in Boot Camp before end of year

Of course plenty of folks have Windows 7 running in Boot Camp just fine, but if you’re one of those crazies that goes in for Apple’s seal of approval you’ll have to wait a little bit. The official support is coming “before the end of the year” to Snow Leopard and will obviously require an update to the Boot Camp software. Unfortunately, Apple’s excluded a lot of its 2006 Intel-based computers from this forthcoming update, and we’re getting the vibe that this is a Snow Leopard-only affair. Basically, par for the Apple course.
