First decent Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots leak out

They’re still not as intriguing as those early leaks we got, but the first non-crappy Windows Mobile 6.5 shots hit today, and we’re glad to see that terrifying bird wallpaper isn’t hardcoded into the OS as we’d feared. Okay, we kid, but everything does look much nicer with antialiasing enabled, and there are some shots showing new curved tabs and new horizontal scrollbars. Welcome cosmetic changes, sure, but it’s still incremental stuff — we’ll see if Microsoft has anything besides the honeycomb and My Phone in store for us at MWC. Two more at the read link.

First WinMo 6.5 handsets in September ’09, 7.0 in April ’10?

Chatter over Windows Mobile 6.5 has grown into a deafening din the past few weeks, strongly suggesting we’ll all be treated to the next WinMo release at MWC in a couple weeks — but how does that translate a device that we can hold in our own two hands, exactly? We’d previously heard Microsoft was targeting the third quarter of 2009, and “sources” of ZDNet’s Mary-Jo Foley are right in line. In a nutshell, she’s saying manufacturers will have access to the gold code in April and the first 6.5 devices will hit the market in September (okay, tail end of the third quarter, but that’s how the cookie crumbles), but she doesn’t stop there — she goes on to say that beta Windows Mobile 7 code will be in the wild in November of this year, with the first handsets following on in April of 2010. That’s a long-ass time from now, yes — but on the flipside, that’s a record for releasing two major WinMo versions in rapid succession. Can’t blame us for trying to find the silver lining.

Motorola posts $3.6b loss as devices sales fall by 26 percent

Things just aren’t getting any better for Motorola — just weeks after the troubled phone manufacturer announced deep layoffs, it’s revealing that it lost $3.6 billion dollars in the fourth quarter. The loss is mainly attributed to falling device sales: handsets were down 26 percent, and mobile devices total were down 51 percent. According to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, the answer for now is Android phones, which the company thinks will be more competitive than WinMo devices in 2009 — and he interestingly said that Moto plans on continuing to make Windows Mobile devices because it thinks WinMo 7 will be a big deal when it comes out in 2010. That’s the first time we’ve ever heard a date on WinMo 7, if you’re keeping track — and if it’s right, it’ll be the second time Jha’s blown the lid on an upcoming version of Windows Mobile. Whoops! We’ll be watching that one, but for now here’s hoping Moto rights the ship with something like an Android-based SURF A3100 — otherwise it may not even be around in 2010.

T-Mobile launches new Shadow today alongside Nokia 7510

It always brings joy to our hearts to see a new UMA-compatible device come into the market, and T-Mobile’s revised Shadow from HTC certainly fits the bill. In fact, it’s being launched today as the very first Windows Mobile device to support HotSpot calls over WiFi, joining BlackBerrys and a handful of dumbphones on the support list. Speaking of HotSpot dumbphones, the stylish 7510 flip is also hitting shelves today with changeable faceplates, a trick semi-hidden external display, and 2 megapixels of Pulitzer-caliber shooting power around back in addition to the WiFi radio. Nab the Shadow for $199.99 and the 7510 for $49.99, both on contract after rebates.

HP’s iPAQ Data Messenger finally up for pre-order

In reality, HP should’ve made sure that its iPAQ Data Messenger shipped alongside the Voice Messenger back in December, but given that it didn’t, we suppose it’s a small victory that the handset is finally up for pre-order in the UK today. Of course, getting any halfway intelligent Briton to spend £419 ($593) on this already forgotten WinMo 6.1 device (with Mobile World Congress just weeks away, no less) is a challenge we’re thrilled to not be responsible for.

[Thanks, Lester]

Windows Mobile 6.5 shows up on the Compulab exeda

The more we see Compulab’s sort-of-silly, sort-of-awesome exeda, the more we like it — although the reason we’re smitten today might be because it’s running what appears to be Windows Mobile 6.5, complete with that “honeycomb” app launcher UI. The company says this is an alpha build of the OS, but it does look farther along than those leaked ROMs we’ve been seeing loaded on a few HTC devices, and we’re intrigued by whispers that it takes full advantage of 6.5’s inertial scrolling and other touch enhancements. All that running on a phone which can also boot Android, sports an Ethernet port, and has left- and right-click buttons? We’ll take two. One more pic at the read link.

Sprint Treo Pro officially unavailable again — for now

We’ve received official word from the good folks at Sprint that the Treo Pro wasn’t supposed to be posted today, hence the unceremonious removal of every last trace of the thing within hours of its unveiling. According to the company, the phone will be sold just as soon as it makes it through the “customary testing process,” but it’s any guess how much longer they think that’s going to take at this point. All told, it probably wasn’t the way Sprint had hoped to take the wraps off, but let’s be honest, we knew this was coming for a hot minute now — we just want the Buy link, guys. See the full statement after the break.

Windows Mobile 6.5 gets installed, shown off on crotchety old HTC hardware?

Historically, major Windows Mobile releases have a track record of leaking out ahead of their official announcements. Actually, they don’t just have a track record of getting leaked — they have a track record of getting installed on legacy hardware, and it looks like WinMo 6.5 may be no different. An intrepid poster over at xda-developers has thrown up files and instructions for getting a build of 6.5 (seemingly, anyway) on an old-school HTC Blue Angel of all things, a device that dates all the way back to 2004 and the early days of this very site. We can’t verify that this is actually 6.5 and not just some semi-slick skin heaped over 6.1, but the fact that we really can’t tell should be just a little alarming to Microsoft if this is seriously what they plan to unveil next month. Follow the break for a blast from HTC’s past running a glimpse of Redmond’s future, and while you’re at it, dig your Siemens SX66 out of the attic.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

First Windows Mobile 6.5 devices due in third quarter of ’09?

Buzz is starting to get white-hot over Microsoft’s plans for Mobile World Congress next month with a number of cloud services and a fresh UI — presumably Windows Mobile 6.5 — heading up the rumor pile, and if Digitimes is even close to right on this latest bit, an MWC unveiling is almost guaranteed. The publication is citing “sources” (oh, those wonderful “sources”) at Taiwanese handset manufacturers saying that the first volley of WinMo 6.5-based devices will hit in the third quarter of the year with major volume following on in the fourth quarter, just in time for the holidays. These guys are well overdue for a serious overhaul and they have to be feeling the heat coming off the Palm camp right now — among others — so let’s hope that window sticks.

Sprint’s Treo Pro in the wild, now with more box

Yo, Sprint, Palm, guys… seriously, give it up. We all know this thing’s coming, so can we at least get an announcement or something? We’ve seen the CDMA-flavored Treo Pro in Sprint livery in the wild already, and now we’re seeing the box, which — no surprise — bears a strong resemblance to its GSM bedfellow. As far as we can tell, this sucker is still on track for release before the end of the month, and with retail packaging floating around, it seems at least plausible — so here’s hoping, eh?

[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
