Android tattoo girl

Natalie “Kommodore” Thompson just joined the rarified ranks of Zune Guy and the BlackBerry Storm Cankle Man with her very own Android tattoo. While obviously a fan of the brand new mobile OS, she says she did it mostly to show her support of open source in general, and ol’ Tux lost out to the more-adorable little green bot (known affectionately around the Engadget HQ as “Marvin”). Add in that shutter shades t-shirt — for a 100x multiplier — and we’re likely dealing with our very first fit-for-society tattoo nerd. Too bad she only dates robots.

Windows Live Writer now has XHTML Support

This article was written on September 05, 2007 by CyberNet.

Live Writer XHTML

Looks like I was right about there being a new Live Writer released today. The Live Writer blog just announced that Beta 3 has been made available, and it can be downloaded by anyone and everyone.

And let me tell you…this thing finally has XHTML support! You know that there was some divine intervention going on when someone over at Microsoft actually cares about standards. ;) Oh, and if you’re looking for the way to enable XHTML support it’s located in your Weblog Settings pictured above.

Don’t fret, there is more good stuff besides for the XHTML support:

  • Insert videos using our new ‘Insert Video’ dialog
  • Upload images to Picasaweb when publishing to your Blogger blog
  • Publish XHTML-style markup
  • Use Writer in 28 additional languages
  • Print your posts
  • Justify-align post text
  • Better image handling (fewer blurry images)
  • Resolved installation issues from last release
  • Many other bug fixes and enhancements

Prior to this I had been using the newly free blog software Post2Blog for all of our postings. It was nice, but a little rough around the edges. Windows Live Writer has won my heart once again, and I’ve already made the switch back! Kudos to the Live Writer developers for making an indispensable app!

There are some things that I want to caution you with though:

  • Even the standalone download uses the new unified installer, and it will automatically upgrade all of your existing Live software (Messenger, Mail, etc…).
  • The new installer takes abnormally long to do its job. So get it started and then walk away for about 15 minutes.
  • All of the Live apps are now installed in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\[AppName], but that shouldn’t break any of your Live Writer plugins.

Kodak’s rugged Zx1 handheld camcorder does 720p in the jungle

Kodak’s 720p Zi6 has only been out for six months, but already we’re seeing what’s likely its beefed-up predecessor. The mighty Zx1 is debuting here at CES, and with it comes a 2-inch LCD monitor, easy upload to YouTube, 720p HD video capture at 60fps, an IP43-certified weather-resistant design and an SD / SDHC card slot that can understand media up to 32GB in size. All told, users can capture up to ten hours of high-def video, and the bundled HDMI cable makes showing off recent grabs as easy as pie. The Zx1 will arrive in five colors (pink, blue, yellow, red and black) and will include pre-charged AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries alongside a charger. We’ll bet Creative and Pure Digital have a little something of their own to show off before this one lands in April for $149.95. Full release is (where else?) after the break.

Unilevers Sustainable Detergents

BusinessWeek: When Unilever (UN) challenged its scientists to come up with a detergent that uses fewer resources, greener materials, and less packaging, few thought it was possible. Yet Small & Mighty, the industry’s first super-concentrated liquid detergent, launched in October 2005 in a partnership with U.S. retailer Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), 18 months ahead of rivals such as Procter & Gamble (PG). What started as a means to boost Unilever’s green credentials now is opening up avenues of innovation that are helping to drive growth in the company’s once-lackluster laundry unit. Since rolling out Small & Mighty in Europe in January 2007, more than 30 million bottles have been sold.

The virtue of the product is that consumers can wash the same amount of laundry with one-third the detergent. Smaller packaging means each bottle uses 55% less plastic, enabling retailers to stock three times the number of bottles in the same space, saving on labor and out-of-stock costs. There’s big savings for Unilever, too, in manufacturing and transportation. The company says it saves 500 million gallons of water and 150 million pounds of plastic each year. And the smaller bottle means Unilever can transport three times as much product in every truck, saving 26 million gallons of diesel each year. “It’s a good example of how good environmental practice is good for the company’s bottom line,” says Keith Weed, Unilever’s group vice-president for home care.

PQI showcasing microSATA SSD, ExpressCard SSD and more at CES

Good heavens, it’s been years since we’ve seen anything noteworthy leave the labs of Power Quotient International. Thankfully, the outfit will be relevant once more when CES rolls around, as its forthcoming SSD line has quite a few big hitters. First up is the 1.8-inch microSATA SSD S518, which is destined to squeeze into tight spaces in capacities of up to 125GB, while the 32GB ExpressCard SSD S520 finally gives you a reason to utilize that funky slot over there that’s gone untouched for months. There will also be a 2.5-inch SATA SSD S525 (available in sizes up to 125GB) and an elusive e-SATA Combo Card S530. As for details on pricing and availability? You’ll have to wait till the show gets rolling for that, but the full release is waiting just past the break to tide you over.

Chinavasion’s plug-in MP3 player / FM transmitter / etcetera seems surprisingly useful

Chinavasion‘s latest piece of steaming trash is actually very un-trash-like, as it thoughtfully meshes a number of in-car technologies into one single cigarette adapter doodad. The Plug-In Car MP4 Player with LCD Display manages to bundle an MP4 / MP3 player, 1.5-inch LCD and 4GB of memory into a device that plugs neatly into your car’s cigarette adapter, and the inclusion of an FM transmitter means that you won’t even need to bring your own DAP to get tunes flowing in the car. Moreover, the SD card slot enables even more jams to be loaded on if you’re embarking on a serious road trip, and the USB socket makes PC-to-whatchamacallit transfers a cinch. We’re truly impressed with just how awe-inspiring this thing is for €21.57 ($29); too bad we don’t trust the quality one bit.

Brando’s 7-in-1 USB charging cable is a handheld owner’s dream come true

It’s truly heartbreaking that this gem wasn’t available for purchase back when you desperately needed a low-cost gift for that special gamer in your life, but considering how lame the chocolate box you got him / her was, there’s still reason to snap this up and slap a belated label on it. Brando’s ingenious 7-in-1 USB Charging Cable provides power for PSP, DS, DS Lite, DSi and Game Boy Advance handhelds, and all that is required is a powered USB port and $7. Oh, and the bravery to allow a cable made by Brando (or some random backwoods company in China that Brando is in cahoots with) charge hundreds of dollars worth of your gadgetry.
