ATT Still Looking into FemtoCell Tech

Plenty of users have eschewed landlines in favor of moving entirely to cell service. One major hurdle has stood in the way for many people, however–poor indoor cell service. Femtocell has been offered as a potential remedy to the issue, but, save for Sprint and Verizon, providers have largely balked at the technology.

Engadget Mobile, however, has uncovered a user survey suggesting that the nation’s largest provider, AT&T, is taking a firm look at the technology. The survey asks users to rate their interest on the following statement,

AT&T’s new product is a small, security-enable cellular base station that easily connects to your home DSL or Cable Internet, providing a reliable wireless signal for any 3G phone in every room of your house.

The unnamed device, it adds, also gives users “unlimited, nationwide Anytime Minutes for incoming and outgoing calls.”

Video: Samsung Show W7900 projector phone gets specced, demoed

Samsung’s Show (formally known as the W7900) made a brief but resonating appearance at CES this year, and now, the lucky kids over at PopSci have managed to acquire a few more juicy specifications as well as a few moments of coveted hands-on time. The forthcoming projector phone, which is apt to land in South Korea first, includes a 3.2-inch OLED display (400 x 240 resolution), quad-band GSM connectivity, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, a five megapixel camera, support for video calling and the obligatory ten lumen projector that shoots 480 x 320 images out at up to 50 inches. The entire device measures in at 4.4- x 2.2- x 0.7-inches, and it actually doesn’t emit a half bad image when the lights are all down. Have a look for yourself just after the break.

The new Joystiq: harder, better, faster, stronger

Sure, we all love gadgets, but sometimes you’ve got to put the phone / GPS / laptop / USB whack-a-mole down and turn your attention to more pressing matters, like video games. That’s where our main dudes at Joystiq come into play. If you don’t already know, the site has gotten roughly one million times more killer, as they’ve recently undergone a major redesign, and have pulled all of those fanboy sites you know and love (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo) into one insane party… but still managed to keep the separate parties going too. Confused? Don’t be — Joystiq is now not only a robust pool of curated sister-site and original content, but it can be switched over into three (aforementioned) separate streams of news, so you can still keep your eyes on the info you’re after. Personally, we love the new look and feel, and we’re fairly confident when you see it, your brain will go flying out of the front of your head. So… what are you waiting for? Get over there!

Amazon to host press event at library, innocently whistling when asked about the Kindle 2

It could mean anything that Amazon is hosting a press event Monday morning, February 9th at the Morgan Library here in New York City. Maybe they just want to talk about how much they enjoy huge archives of original manuscripts and the smell of aged paper. Whatever the case may be, the last time we went to an Amazon event, they ended up launching the Kindle, so it’s not crazy to speculate that we very well could see the introduction of a new iteration of the successful e-book. We’ve pinged the company for more solid word, but it’s been radio silence thus far. Of course, we’ll be there live covering any news as it breaks, so just plan on being here… or being square.

HP’s iPAQ Data Messenger finally up for pre-order

In reality, HP should’ve made sure that its iPAQ Data Messenger shipped alongside the Voice Messenger back in December, but given that it didn’t, we suppose it’s a small victory that the handset is finally up for pre-order in the UK today. Of course, getting any halfway intelligent Briton to spend £419 ($593) on this already forgotten WinMo 6.1 device (with Mobile World Congress just weeks away, no less) is a challenge we’re thrilled to not be responsible for.

[Thanks, Lester]

Amazon Preparing To Drop Kindle 2 On February 9?

If an invitation for an event at New York’s, ahem, Morgan Library is to be believed, Amazon’s new-and-improved Kindle could soon see the light of day.

The date meshes exactly with the previously assumed Q1 ’09 release date, and rumored pictures of the new device have been flowing since before the holidays. And we generally know what happens when gadget makers schedule press events at literary-themed NYC locactions.

We’ll be there, of course, to bring you all the news as it drops.

New Amazon Kindle 2 coming February 9?

Is this what Amazon.com will announce at its press conference on February 9?

A few days ago I wrote a column speculating when Amazon’s new Kindle might arrive, and I might have gotten the answer Tuesday morning.

I just received an invite “to an …
