Homestar Globe planetarium projects inside

While planetariums typically project, Sega Toys’ upcoming Homestar Globe is completely internal. Designed by Takayuki Oohira, inventor of the Homestar Planetarium series, the desktop viewers allow users to peer inside to see the stars, planets, and constellations backlit in high-quality.

Hoemstar Globe was announced for June release at last week’s Toy Forum. The details aren’t completely clear (exchange of internal plates, etc), but the concept places the device somewhere between executive gift and cool coffee table conversation starter.

Verizon gets official with Network Extender: $249, no monthly fees

Right on cue, Verizon has launched its very own femtocell into the world: the Network Extender. For those unfamiliar, this here box connects to one’s broadband internet connection and essentially acts as a mini cell tower right in the home. In other words, it’ll make your at-home VZW coverage absolutely amazing. Unlike Sprint’s AIRAVE, though, there are absolutely no monthly fees attached — simply plunk down $249.99 up front and watch your signal improve. As for limitations, you can only use this within the Verizon Wireless Enhanced Services coverage area (read: not overseas), and there’s no support for EV-DO data speeds or Location Based Services such as VZ Navigator and Chaperone. It’s available now for ordering online or over the phone, and all the nitty-gritty details are covered in the FAQ section linked below. So, AT&T — you’re next, right?

Sprint Treo Pro spotted in the wild, specs and all

Thanks, Best Buy — we owe you one another. Yet again, we’re getting our first real live look at a recently unveiled Sprint handset courtesy of the big box retailer, and this time it’s the CDMA version of Palm’s Treo Pro. We’re also being blessed with a look at the specs sheet, which shows Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, 512MB of storage (300MB available to the user), a two megapixel camera (with a digital 8x zoom and video capture), removable 1,500mAh Li-ion battery good for five hours of talking, a microSDHC slot, microUSB 2.0 port, 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, WinMo 6.1 Professional, a 528MHz Qualcomm dual-core MSM7501A CPU, 320 x 320 touchscreen, EV-DO Rev. A support, 802.11b/g WiFi and built-in GPS (standalone and assisted). So, aside from the cell radio, it’s pretty much the same Treo Pro we’ve grown to know and kinda-sorta love. No price was posted, but it’s not like Sprint hasn’t already told us — have fun in the gallery below!

[Thanks, Roel]

Bandai’s latest handheld helps women “understand” men

For the longest time now, we were under the impression that it was men looking for miraculous ways of understanding woman. Clearly, we’ve had the whole thing backwards. Bandai has apparently polled thousands of opinionated males in order to fill its latest handheld with data that woman aged 20 to 30 will pay ¥2,499 ($28) to know. In all seriousness, we can’t imagine this thing having a very good search mechanism, so its actual usefulness is definitely questionable. One thing’s for sure, though — handing one of these to your SO / ex-lover with a smirk is guaranteed to get a rise.

AMD sees distinction between netbooks and laptops vanishing

Before you get all riled up, remember, this is just a man in a suit speaking his mind. Got it? Good. On AMD’s most recent earnings call, CEO Dirk Meyer casually confessed that “the distinction between what is a netbook and what is a laptop is going to go away,” and he continued by saying that there would be “a continuum of price points and form factors.” Now, we’re not about to believe that the whole netbook category will simply dry up and vanish in the near future — much to the chagrin of Psion Teklogix, we assume — but it’s not like we haven’t heard equally odd remarks from the CEOs of Intel and RIM. On second thought, shove a Core 2 Quad CPU, twin GPUs and 4GB of RAM into a Mini 10 chassis while nixing any and all heat issues, and you can call it whatever you damn well please.

Little missmatched brings funky mismatched socks, pajamas and apparel to retail. By targeting the zany population that dresses extrovertedly and ignores standard fashion norms, this clever product actually makes the ‘normal’ folks wanna have a little piece of all that nutty fun while doing their daily clothes shopping. You know, get in touch with their crazy side…

With an adorable name, logo and fresh, fun designs, I’m confident this mis-matched product will sprout some improper fashion-coordination trends everywhere.

Cheetah Ultra Sports reinvents the snowboard, wants $1899 for it

We’ve already seen the skateboard get re-engineered this year, so why not its most closely related, snow-loving cousin? Cheetah Ultra Sports has apparently developed the Whip F-117 after four solid years of research, development and taking oodles of time off to hit the slopes. In short, it’s dubbed the Lamborghini of snowboards, promising to make riders go faster, feel lighter, turn quicker, edge harder, carve sharper and be broker. Yeah, we’re just kidding on that last one, though the $1,899 price tag may just disagree. The board is only available in limited quantities due to the hand built nature, and obviously you’ll have a difficult time trying one before you buy. So, what say you? The next big thing in boarding, or the next piece of hype sure to flame out in short order?

Yahoo Mail Opens up API to Users!

This article was written on March 29, 2007 by CyberNet.

This is definitely Yahoo Mail’s week to shine.  First they decided to offer their customers “unlimited” mail storage earlier this week, and now they’ve announced that they’re opening up their API for users to tinker around with.

Depending on the type of account that you have with Yahoo Mail, you’ll be offered different access.  If you’re an ordinary Yahoo Mail user, the API will include methods for listings folders, moving messages, listing messages etc.  If you’re a Premium Account Holder (you have to pay), you’ll have access to message text, attachments, the message search feature, etc.

Premium account holders who use the API to create cool apps which then draw in new premium users will be offered monetary compensation – $10.00 per app according to CNet. Now web developers will have the chance to get creative and design new applications to make the experience even better.

Yahooapi1

One of the first mashups that used the Yahoo Mail API came out of Yahoo’s Hack day last year.  The mashup allows users to send postcards via Flickr.  Using a Greasemonkey script and the Yahoo Mail API, they were able to create a “send postcard” feature in Flickr. The image above shows what the “send postcard” feature looks like in Flickr, and the image below shows what the postcard looks like when the recipient receives it.

Yahooapi2

If you’d like to see how it was created, Leah Culver explains in this video:

This opens up a lot of doors with a lot of potential.  Yahoo is hoping this will draw attention, and a wide variety of third-party add-ons will be available from it to entice more people to come over to Yahoo mail.

Jolicloud: the OS your netbook has been screaming for

See that? That’s what could be on your netbook later this year. Out of nowhere, one Tariq Krim has crafted the Jolicloud operating system, which is an OS designed specifically for those miniaturized laptops that rely on underpowered CPUs and less RAM than any PC should be booted up with. In essence, Jolicloud is a modified flavor of Linux that promises faster boot times than other alternatives, and judging by the shot above, it’s pretty heavily reliant on icon-based navigation. Hit the read link to keep tabs on its release date.
