President Obama’s Daughter Is a Kodak Fan

Image002

Here’s a fun little tidbit from today’s inauguration: Malia Obama’s camera of choice is the Kodak EasyShare M893.

A Kodak spokeswoman spotted a photo of Malia taking pictures of her father’s speech and confirmed the camera was the M893 ($150). I haven’t used one myself, but it doesn’t look too shabby: 8.1 megapixels, automatic face detection technology and an overall four-star user rating (out of five) on Kodak’s web site.

Have one of your own? Now’s the time to brag.

Sony ushers in change, hope with upcoming PS3 2.60 firmware update

Sony just dropped some details on its upcoming 2.60 firmware update for the PS3. The big thrust of the update is a new Photo Gallery app, which can sort by various EXIF data, but also the actual content of the image itself, including colors used, number of people in the photo, how old they are, and facial expressions they used when you pulled out your powdered-blue Kodak to take a few historical snapshots. Naturally you can build slideshows with music and the like. Sony’s also adding with this update guest access to the PlayStation Store and DivX 3.11 support. If that’s not enough magic to get you riled up, Sony’s also pushing out a PSP update, firmware 5.03 that addresses “security vulnerabilities” (we wonder what that could be?) and some stability issues. There’s a video walkthrough of the PS3 update after the break.

LG overtakes Motorola for third place in global handset shipments

Half a year ago, Motorola was still clinging tight to the number three spot in terms of worldwide handset shipments, but boy — what a difference six months makes. According to numbers compiled by DigiTimes, LG Electronics managed to ship just over 100 million mobile phones in 2008, while Moto checked in with “just” 99.9 million shipped. That makes LG the third largest handset maker in terms of shipments, barely beating out Moto and Sony Ericsson who placed fourth and fifth, respectively. As expected, Nokia and Samsung are still holding down the top two spots, but it’s the continued slippage of Motorola that’s most significant here. You know what they say about being on rock bottom, right? We bet Motorola’s wondering if that mantra applies here.

HP’s very recently announced Mini 2140 is available now for you to get one of your very own if you so please. The handsome fella’s just been unleashed on the world, and if you don’t remember his stats, well, that’s what we’re here for. The business-aimed netbook features a 1.6GHz Atom CPU, with options for either an 80GB or 160GB hard drive, up to 2GB of RAM, and resolution options of 1366 x 768 and 1024 x 567 for the 10-inch screen, and of course the ExpressCard / 54 slot. Though a Linux OS has been announced, so far all we’ve seen are options for XP and Vista materialize, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled. Prices start at $499 for the base model, but run up to $799 for the tricked out Vista version. Now get back to work, slacker.

Watch the Inauguration Live on iPhone

3212372361_268075512d_3
A new application enables iPhone owners to view a live stream of today’s presidential inauguration on their handsets.

Ustream, a free application available through the iPhone App Store,
allows users to select live streams from various news
outlets such as CNN.

With a few minutes to spare before the inauguration, I gave Ustream a
test run on my iPhone. On a Wi-Fi connection the app
works great; you can even watch the streams in landscape mode. However, the playback shuts down when
viewing streams on the EDGE or 3G network.

LG gets official with 50PQ60D and 42PQ60D Xcanvas plasmas in Korea

Don’t bet the farm on it just yet, but given the FCC filing that outed these sets at the tail end of December, we’d say it’s safe to assume that the panel you see above (and after the break) will be headed to America in short order. Made official today in South Korea, LG’s Xcanvas 50PQ60D and 42PQ60D plasmas sport a sleeker, more fully integrated design that conceals the speakers within the border. The TV itself also detects ambient light and automatically adjusts brightness in order to conserve energy, and the built-in USB port enables portable media to be loaded on for all to see. Few other details about the pair are being released, but you can expect ’em on sale halfway across the world in around three weeks for $1,460 / $1,022, respectively.

After resting up and settling into our post-CES golden desk chairs, team Engadget got busy at installing Windows 7 on pretty much anything they could find.
