Student charts electrical usage in real-time, much to Big Brother’s delight

It’s our best guess that University of Florida PhD student Jason Winters woke up at 10:00AM ET this morning and took an approximately 18-minute shower. How did we come to this conclusion? Using an AC clamp attached to an ioBridge, the biomedical engineering scholar measures the main electrical lines entering his house and sends the data to a Google charts widget on his personal blog that reports the kilowatt-hour usage in real time. As a footnote, he presents an example graph of when the hot water is turned on, which then produces close to 4500 watts. That’s just over the amount of power he used this morning for about 1100 seconds. Of course, we can’t say for certain any of these morning events really transpired, but then again, we don’t exactly want to know. Hit up the read links for directions on DIYing this.

A Better Mac OS X Leopard Theme for Firefox 3

This article was written on May 21, 2008 by CyberNet.

The features and performance of Firefox 3 have helped me fall in love with the browser all over again, but the “native” themes need some work. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a theme that is more along the lines of what Safari looks like on my Mac, and one developer has stepped up to the plate with two gorgeous alternatives: GrApple Delicious and GrApple Yummy.

At first glance the two themes look nearly the same (as seen below), but the differences lie in the details. GrApple Yummy is almost an exact clone of Safari, which is what I thought I was looking for. That was until I noticed that each individual tab does not include the site’s icon, which I didn’t even realize Safari lacked until this theme made me go back and double-check. I was very bummed because I loved the theme otherwise, but that’s when I came across GrApple Delicious which does show the icons on each tab:

The only thing that is really different between the two themes (at least that I noticed) is the tab bar. In GrApple Yummy the tab bar hangs from the toolbar located above it just like in Safari, where as GrApple Delicious displays the tab bar in the typical old-school Firefox fashion. It doesn’t really bother me which way the tab bar is oriented as long as I have my icons on each tab, and so I’m loving the GrApple Delicious theme.

Obviously these themes are targeted towards Mac OS X users, but they do surprisingly work on other operating systems. The only issue was that the menu (File, Edit, etc…) layout was a bit off from what it should be, but that can quickly be cured with an extension such as Personal Menu. If you want to install it on an operating system other than Mac OS X you’ll need to do so from one of these two pages: GrApple Delicious or GrApple Yummy.

LG Display CEO says that LCD panel prices have “reached a bottom”

The company may not exactly have the final say on the matter, but LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo seems confident that the market for LCD panels is finally set to turn around, with him saying today that, “the good news is that we’ve reached a bottom,” and that, “TV panel prices will likely stop the downward trend and recover.” LG doesn’t see things completely turning around overnight, however, and in the meantime it says it’ll be pouring more than $400 million into a new production line designed to produce high-end LTPS LCD displays for mobile devices, which it apparently expects will be a more profitable area, and help it turn that frown upside down once more.

ULTRACLAMP Is A Cheap Gift For Your Camera

ULTRACLAMP.jpg

“Pleasantly surprised.” These are two words I enjoy, but seldom get to include in a post. Let’s roll-em-out today because I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like my $20 ULTRACLAMP. “Really Geoff,” my inner voice shouts. “Do you really think the “ULTRACLAMP” deserves an entry?”

Oh yeah! It is now my favorite product from Redmond, Washington.

Green House rolls out Kana Micro digital audio player

It looks like anyone that wished their digital audio player looked more like a nondescript USB drive is now in luck, as Green House has just introduced its new Kana Micro player, which is far more likely to get lost than stolen. True to its barebones nature, it seems you’ll also have to supply your own microSD card for storage with this one (up to 2GB is support), and you can apparently expect to get a whopping two hours of battery life before it needs to be recharged via the built-in USB connector. No word on a release ’round here just yet, as you might have guessed, but those in Japan can pick one up right now in their choice of seven different colors for a mere ¥1,480, or about $16.

Music Drop MP3 projector doesn’t actually project MP3s

Maverick industrial designer Gowoon Jeong understands intuitively that people don’t want fancy PMPs with displays — they want tiny, oddly shaped devices that force the user to project track information onto a wall or body part, in a hard to read spiral shape. As the man points out, this gives users “unexpected pleasure.” And who are we to argue? The Music Drop player is still just a concept, but if — and we’re hoping when — the thing gets real, you’ll know as soon as we do. Promise. Close-up after the break.

Wrist Band Portable Battery charges your phone, electrifies your look

There are plenty of terrible portable chargers out there, but the “Wrist Band Portable Battery” sure isn’t one of them. The name pretty much tells the whole tale — it’s a wrist band packed with a lithium-ion battery (that supposedly gets about five hours of juicing time) for charging numberless portable devices. It comes with 7 different adapters, and the totally awesomely-styled band itself has a set of LEDs which indicate the battery life remaining. It’ll cost you about $25 to get one of your own and prove once and for all that no, punk is not dead. Check out a few more pics after the break.

Nokia 5730 XpressMusic gets exhaustively previewed

Well, hello there 5730 XpressMusic, so nice to finally meet you! This admittedly odd looking Nokia has been brought to our attention courtesy of Russia’s own Mobile-Review, and while we’re still trying to decide whether or not the QWERTY slide-out keyboard is a turn off or totally awesome (with its dot matrix-styled font), we figured it prudent to pass along the information, anyway. Said mobile sports a 2-inch QVGA screen, backlit keys, a 1,000mAh battery good for 4.5 hours of yappin’, EDGE data, inbuilt GPS, 128MB of RAM, a microSD card slot, USB / Bluetooth and Symbian S60 running the show. We’re told to expect it out in European markets this April for €220 ($289), though worldwide availability remains a mystery. Have a look in the read link for eleventy billion more images and a poorly translated preview.

[Thanks, momchil]
