Download Windows XP SP3 via Windows Update

Windows XP SP3 It’s that time again! Yep, time for more Microsoft leaks. This time around a “hack” has been exposed that will let existing Windows XP users download and install a Release Candidate of Service Pack 3 (SP3) via Windows Update. If this sounds familiar to you it’s probably because a similar hack was already leaked back in October for Vista SP1.

Early reports are estimating that XP SP3 has roughly a 10% performance increase over XP SP2, which is a rather large difference. That’s definitely good news for XP users, and might end up pushing more users to make the upgrade

So what do you have to do? Not much actually. Just copy some text into Notepad, save and run the file, and then check for updates in XP. Running the file will modify the registry a bit, but it won’t screw up your system. I did get around to trying it out, and it worked flawlessly:

  1. Copy and paste the following code into Notepad:
    @echo off
    reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\XPSP3 /f 2> NUL
    reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\XPSP3 /v RCPreview /t REG_SZ /d 1c667073-b87f-4f52-a479-98c85711d869 /f
    echo XPSP3 registry key has been set. Please check for updates in Windows Update.
    pause
  2. Save the file as XPSP3.cmd (it’s important to include the extension).
  3. Run the file that you saved in Step 2 by double-clicking on it. Restart your computer and check for new Windows Updates.
  4. Windows XP SP3 should be found, and it is a 337MB download so give it some time to download and apply the updates. When all is said and done your version of Windows XP should be: Windows XP Build 2600.xpsp.071030-1537: Service Pack 3, v.3244

Enjoy the better performance and stability! You can hold off until next year if you want to download XP SP3 when it is officially released.

Philips debuts GoGear Ariaz, Opus PMPs

Philips has been keeping things relatively simple with its GoGear line as of late, but it looks to be getting back to full-on PMPs with its latest pair: the GoGear Ariaz and GoGear Opus. The GoGear Ariaz is the slightly smaller of the two, with it packing a 2-inch display, along with 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of storage, an FM tuner, a built-in mic for voice recording, and a somewhat unique interface that includes a combination of “touchscreen buttons” and a large rocker key. The Opus, on the other hand, appears to be an updated version of one of Philips’ original GoGear players, and packs a larger 2.8-inch QVGA display, your choice of 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB capacities, built-in Bluetooth, and integrated support for the BBC’s iPlayer. No word on a release ’round here just yet, but both will apparently be available in Europe in April for between €79 and €179, or roughly $100 to $230.

Is Honeywells 82-inch LCD a Digital Sign? Is That Bad?

Honeywell logoAccording to a report filed by HDGuru, Honeywell plans to ship LCD TVs at sizes up to 82 inches on the diagonal.

The LCD TVs will actually be manufactured by Soyo, a Taiwan manufacturer that originally designed PC motherboards, but moved into the server and white-box space. And Westinghouse’s Web site confirms it, with a downloadable PDF detailing the MT-HWGWT8218AM’s specifications, including a gross weight of 369 pounds. The key metrics we’re all interested in, however, aren’t there: namely, price and shipping date.

While dynamic contrast rations might be a bit misleading, the 600 cd/m2 brightness seems like it will at least flood the room with light, probably making the MT-HWGWT8218AM unlikely to earn a PCMag.com Greentech award. At that size, however, the 1920×1080 pixel ratio might seem a little lean. Maybe if it was a 4K display…

Mio’s Believer GPS puts POIs, Book of Psalms at your fingertips

Mio has had some fun products in the past (well, at least one), and if you’re among the great number of our mitzva-observant readership this item should be right up your proverbial alley. The Ma’amin (Hebrew for “Believer”) is a GPS unit available in Israel. Besides the maps and the POIs (including holy sites, synagogues, cemeteries, and ritual baths) this guy includes the Book of Psalms, a Hebrew calendar, and plenty of prayers and blessings. Additionally, the device keeps things on the up and up by only speaking in a man’s voice and cutting out the telephone and internet access. Prices start at around $240.

Vista SP2, Server 2008 R2 start making the rounds as Release Candidates

It looks like the long-awaited Release Candidate build of Vista SP2 is hitting the streets today, alongside Server 2008 R2. According to Ars Technica, these guys will soon be available for testers via Windows Update, as a standalone installer, or as a slipstreamed version for select languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, and Japanese. Rumor has it that Microsoft is gearing up for a final release date sometime in April.
