Kindle owners stage e-book price protest

Wired’s Gadget Lab blog has a story about how a group of about 250 Kindle owners are staging an online protest over Kindle e-books that cost more than $9.99. The weapon they’re using is Amazon’s own tagging system, as price offenders are getting hit with a …

HandShoe: Building a Better Mouse

HandShoeMouse.jpg

Two Dutch universities have developed the latest ergonomic mouse, called the HandShoe Mouse. The idea is one that’s been around before: Instead of resting your hand on your desk and pushing the mouse with your fingers, you rest your whole hand on the HandShoe and maneuver from the elbow or shoulder. I’ve tried mice like these in the past, and while the average user won’t find them comfortable, they’re a good choice for people with repetitive strain injuries.

The mouse’s curve supports the hand’s natural shape when relaxed, so that the hand never tenses up. While the Web site doesn’t specify, most pictures show it having two buttons and a scroll wheel.

The HandShoe comes in multiple sizes for each hand and also includes a wireless version. The wireless mouse doesn’t use replaceable batteries; instead, you plug in the included USB cord and use it as a corded mouse while it charges. The HandShoe works with Windows and Macintosh computers and sells for $105.99 euros/$140 (wired) or 129.99 euros/$172 (wireless).

Rumor mill says Sony Ericsson Idou might be coming this October

It’s all a tiny bit hazy, but it sounds like a Sony Ericsson PR rep in Germany has confirmed that the 12 megapixel camera-boasting Idou will be hitting the streets in October. Gustaf Brusewitz of Sony Ericsson Sweden didn’t have too much to say about that statement, and only repeated what he’d said in the past — that the Idou will be shipping “sometime in the second half of the year.” Come on Gustaf, throw us a hint!

T-Mobile’s 2009 3G rollout schedule leaked?

It hasn’t been verified, but optimistic T-Mobile customers aching to get a little broadband on the beach might want to schedule their trips to Honolulu around Q4 — at least if you’re willing to believe this 3G rollout schedule that’s apparently being sent out this morning. Other notable cities on the list include Milwaukee, Tucson, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Nashville and Salt Lake City, as well as a wide swath of Texas. We’re poking around for confirmation — at the very least, this list doesn’t contradict anything T-Mo’s said in the past, but we’ll let you know.

Japanese Face Masks: Senseware Designer Collaboration Project

Senseware is a project that teams up chemical and material manufacturers with designers of all walks to create new, compelling uses for synthetic materials. The most recent edition features major manufacturers like Asahi Kasei and Toray Industries alongside creative luminaries like architect Jun Aoki and industrial designer Nendo.

The results vary from practical structures to purely artist creations—and to fashion items. This year Japan Fashion Week design duo Mint Designs incorporated their Senseware contribution into their catwalk show. The “To be someone” mask project was created from an unwoven material using long polyester fibers called “Smash” by Asahi Kasei Fibers Corporation. The highly thermo-dynamic material can be easily molded into 3D forms—here resulting in a pollen mask press-formed into the shape of a perfectly balanced face.

For the show, the masks were decorated with prints to match the clothes on display, giving the models an eerie mannequin-esque sameness. Except of course for the ones that got the contrasting chimpanzee version of the mask.

But joking (and social critique) aside, why not? Pollen masks are a common sight in Japan, especially now as hay fever hits its peak. We’ve looked at previous attempts to make the mask more fashionable, namely the Maskore (Mask-erade) campaign from fashion website GirlsGate.com that instructed women how to dress up their mask to suit their look. Why not one that is more than just tolerable, but actually enhances your appearance?

While Mint Designs created the masks purely as prototypes for the project, PR representative Naoko Jensen noted that a number of buyers and press expressed interest in them—suggesting that in this case Senseware has succeeded in pushing the discussion and potential of an average, accepted product to another level.

From Aprill 22-27 Senseware will travel to the Milan Triennial. This year marks the third edition of the annual series, Tokyo Fiber/Senseware.

Gigabyte posts specs for ThinNote S1024 and Booktop M1022

It’s all coming together, folks. Merely hours after Gigabyte hosted up a product portal for its T1028 TouchNote, the same occurrence has just went down for the ThinNote S1024 and Booktop M1022. Both rigs were initially introduced last month at CeBIT, and now you can pretty much bank on ’em shipping stateside within the next little while. As for the M1022, you’ll find it bundled with a vertical docking station and packing an N270 or N280 processor, Windows XP Home, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi, optional WiMAX / HSDPA and a 6-cell battery. The S1024 netbook contains most of the same hardware, but you’ll have to handcraft your own stand if that you’re thing.
