Dell launches freshened Vostro 1320, 1520 and 1720 laptops

It’s been awhile since this family saw any updates, but we must say, Dell did a pretty laudable job with the redesign here. Make no mistake — these guys are still aimed squarely at the gamboling suits in attendance, but we could certainly see a consumer or two pulling the trigger. The freshened line includes the 13.3-inch Vostro 1320, the 15.4-inch Vostro 1520, and the 17-inch Vostro 1720, all of which come with pre-installed videoconferencing and webcam software (so long as you purchase the integrated webcam and microphone). Furthermore, users can now opt for an SSD in place of the traditional hard drive, a fingerprint reader for added security or an encrypted HDD with Wave Systems software. The whole trio is available today in North America and select South American countries starting at $569 (Vostro 1520), $629 (Vostro 1320), and $649 (Vostro 1720).

The 404 312: Where Jonathan Coulton nude pics Obama iPhone

Internet superstar, singer, and songwriter Jonathan Coulton graces us with his presence on today’s epic show. He instantly makes us a classy podcast when he plays a couple of tracks off of his new DVD concert album Best. Concert. Ever.

(Credit: Wilson G. Tang/CNET)

We thought it would be funny to have a SEO-friendly title today (SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.) but we may have gone a little overboard. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and a couple of other choice words that we’re legally not able to write here at CNET weren’t in the show title, so we can all be thankful for that.

More importantly, Jonathan Coulton plays his hit songs “Code Monkey” and “Re: Brains” live during the show–a first for The 404–which was actually very special for us. We talk a bit about what it’s like quitting your day job at a technology company to go write funny songs for a living. With the recession giving everyone just a little bit more free time, Jonathan encourages us to take chances and write a song about IKEA bookshelves.

Also, Mr. Coulton promotes his upcoming concert album “Best. Concert. Ever.” We promise that it’s going to knock your socks off. You can buy it directly from him.

If you have any questions or comments, call 1-866-404-CNET (2638). Send us an email the404 [at] cnet [dot] com. Let us know what you think of today’s show. Or if you’re just lonely at night and need someone to talk to, leave a message, and we’ll make fun of you the very next morning.

Engadget’s recession antidote: FreeAgent Go hard drive for your Mac!

This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn’t want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back — so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We’ll be handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff / companies stop sending things. Today we’ve got a FreeAgent Go 320GB hard drive plus dock on offer. Read the rules below (no skimming — we’re omniscient and can tell when you’ve skimmed) and get commenting! Check after the break for some photos of the prize!

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for “fixing” the world economy, that’d be sweet too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one Seagate FreeAgent Go hard drive and dock. Approximate value is $180.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.

Hands On With HTC G2 Android Phone

Htc_vodafone

LAS VEGAS — About five months after HTC G1, the first Google Android operating system based device, made its debut, HTC is ready to roll out its second Android phone.

Called the HTC Magic/Sapphire, the phone will be released through service provider Vodafone in parts of Europe but recent FCC filings indicate it is likely to come to the U.S. soon with T-Mobile as the telecom carrier.

At the CTIA 2009 conference, we had a chance to briefly get hands on with the G2, though HTC didn’t want to acknowledge the device with that moniker.

In terms of looks, the HTC Magic with Android OS looks very similar to the G1, except that it lacks a slide-out keyboard. Overall the phone feels slimmer and lighter than the G1 though it is unlikely to win any points for sleek design. The black finish is basic and the phone has the standard five-button configuration.

The HTC Magic will be the first Android phone without a keyboard. The G2’s on-screen keyboard is fairly responsive though nowhere near the iPhone or Palm Pre quality.

The phone’s main screen has icons for messaging, browser, maps, contacts and the Android market. Switching between contacts and browser seemed pretty smooth but overall our impression is that there is little to really make users go ‘wow’ when they see the device.

The HTC Magic will start retailing through Vodafone within the next three weeks, says HTC spokesperson Eric Lin.

Here’s another picture of the phone

Panasonic adds native iPod dock to D-Docks, drinks the Kool-Aid

Sony gave up on ATRAC (outside of Japan anyway) and to being an iPod accessory shill long, long ago. But Panasonic, through its own inertia or arrogance has persevered with its D-SNAP and D-DOCK rigs long after its market share was doomed. After all, there’s no need for Panasonic to continue pushing the SD card, they’ve won. Still, it does a Japanese heart good to know that it can now coax its fleshy keeper into buying a D-Dock with a native iPod dock connector and sliding panel that reveals a preference for 90’s- or noughts-era music media. SD and SDHC card too, of course, this is Panasonic.

Cheap Geek: Altec Lansing Speakers, Kodak Camera, iLive iPod Player

ALVS3251.jpg

I know you’ve been down lately. All your friends went away: Ethan, Fox, that gold-digger Theresa. Nothing’s been the same since Passions was canceled.  Here are some tech deals to cheer you up.

1. Now you can have a 6-channel surround sound experience, with Altec Lansing quality, and nobody has to know you paid only $39.99 (with free shipping!). Buy.com brings you today’s top deal, the Altec Lansing VS3251 Speaker System. This set works with your computer, home entertainment system, or even portable music player. You’ll get two front speakers, two rear speakers, a center speaker, and a woofer.

2. Another outrageously good deal: Office Max is selling the Kodak M753 7-megapixel camera for only $69.99. There’s a deal within this deal: order by April 4 and you get a free 1GB storage card with your order.

3. It’s a great day to buy speakers, apparently. Buy.com is also offering the DPI iLive IS208B iPod Speaker System for $37.98, with free shipping. This portable player lets you bring your tunes anywhere you need some music, and includes a remote.

Sony Vid Cam Delivers Small Shape, Big Features

Sony.jpgSony unveiled an irresistible compact video camera today, the HDR-TG5V. It combines the small shape of Flip cameras that have changed the consumer video market with high-end features previously found only in larger cameras.

The HDR-TG5V shoots 1920-by-1080 high-def video and can snap 4-megapixel photos. You can save your work to the 16GB of internal flash memory (enough for 6 hours of high-def video). If that’s not enough room, you can add a Memory Stick PRO Duo to more recording time. Naturally, it offers a Carl Zeiss Vaio-Tessar lens with 10X optical zoom.

I love that the HDR-TG5V also offers GPS for geotagging your work. The camera’s 2.7-inch screen can display a map interface with pushpins showing every location that you’ve shot. Tap one of the pins to call up that video.

When you’re using it for still photos, built-in smile shutter technology takes a picture only when your subjects have a nice grin. You’ll also get face detection, to make sure your subjects are in focus.

This camera just rocketed to the top of my wish list, but it isn’t cheap. It will be released in May and will sell for $999.99. Sony will also offer a travel kit, including a battery, travel charger, and pouch, for $100.

NVIDIA GTX 275 / ATI Radeon HD 4890 review roundup

Unless you’ve started your weekend early, you have probably realized that both NVIDIA and AMD announced new GPUs this morning. Coincidental timing aside, it sure makes things easy for the consumer to eye the respective benchmarks and plan out their next mid-range GPU purchase accordingly. A whole bevy of reviews, tests, graphs and bar charts have hit the web this morning extolling and panning the pros and cons, but without getting too deep in the nitty-gritty, we can sum things up pretty easily with this. NVIDIA’s GTX 275 showed performance that placed it perfectly between the GTX 285 and GTX 260, and in all but a few off-the-wall tests, it outpaced the ATI Radeon HD 4890 (albeit slightly). Granted, the HD 4890 was called the “fastest, single-GPU powered graphics card AMD has ever produced” by HotHardware, though apparently even that wasn’t enough to help it snag the gold across the board. If you’re hungry for more (and you are, trust us), take the rest of the day off and dig in below.
