Lenovo’s 15-inch IdeaPad Y550 laptop with Desktop Navigator now on sale

Is that, is that a laptop? Why yes, yes it is… that’s Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y550 now ready for purchase. In a world gone cuckoo for Atom-based netbooks, isn’t it refreshing to see a 15.6-inch (1366 x 768 pixel) laptop that packs a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T4200 processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory and 250GB hard disk, 6-cell battery, integrated DVD writer, and touch-sensitive Desktop Navigator shortcut bar for $669? Why stop there though? $1,199 nabs 4GB of memory, 512MB of GeForce G 105M graphics, and 500GB of disk. For the same money you could gather a trio of netbooks into a personal grid computer of about the same power. Just be sure to let us know how that goes.

Informal poll suggests nearly 70% of Kindle owners are over 40

There’s already been some anecdotal evidence that the Kindle appeals to a slightly older set than your average newfangled gadget, and a new poll culled from responses on the Amazon forums is now shedding a bit more, if still not entirely scientific light on the matter. According to the Kindle Culture blog, the single largest group of Kindle users (broken down by decade) is folks in their 50s, with those in their 40s and 60s coming in second and third — all of which adds up to nearly 50% of users being over 50, and close to 70% being over 40. Broken down into some broader demographics, that translates to adults 35-54 accounting for 38.4% of the user base, with older adults (over 54) representing a healthy 37.3%, while young adults (18-34) manage a mere 22%. Video iPhone to feature iMovie App?

Apple rumors seem especially rampant in this year’s run-up to the Worldwide Developers Conference. With all the fuss focused upon a rumored 10-inch device that fits somewhere in between Apple’s MacBooks and iPod touch, these poor ol’ iPhone rumors just can’t get any attention. Riiight. The latest has BusinessWeek offering further testimonial that video recording will be heavily featured in the summer release of the 3.0 firmware and presumed third generation iPhone. According to a source familiar with Apple’s plans, the next iPhone will make shooting video super simple and feature an iMovie App that enables on-phone editing and uploads direct to YouTube. If true it would certainly be a welcomed update for first and second gen iPhone users and something we’d expect Apple to tout loudly as a major new feature on a new device or two sporting beefier cameras.

Ask Engadget: Best 4.3-inch GPS unit?

We know, it’s a little late here on the east coast to be “thinking clearly,” but we (and David) are pleading with you to pull it together in order to contribute. Afterwards, you and your freshened mind can shoot us a question to ask at engadget dawt com.

“I know, it’s a really boring question, but the last time this was asked was 2 years ago. I’m looking for a 4.3-inch GPS unit with decent battery life (so I can walk around with it as well as use it in my car), Bluetooth for making wireless calls, and good voice-recognition. Traffic updates would be a plus, too. I don’t care too much about multimedia functions. Is there anything out there that fits the bill? I hope to hear some advice from the community!”

As do we David, as do we. So, what’s the verdict here, folks? Are connected units worth the monthly surcharge? Sound off below!

PlayStation 3 motion-sensing controller to be shown off at E3?

It’s now just over a month before Sony’s E3 press event and already the rumor mill is aflutter with what the comapny’s planning to debut on stage. We’ve already heard about PSP’s apparent makeover, and now comes word from Variety that the PlayStation 3’s oft-rumored motion sensing controller, closer in the vein of the Wii remote than of its relative-positioning Sixaxis pad, will be getting some time on stage. A source from Kombo late last month suggested key third-party develoeprs have already been brought up to speed and asked to implement the functionality into their upcoming titles. Like we said, this isn’t the first time we’ve been down this road, and it’s not happened infinitely more times than has, so… take that as you will. Brace yourself, this is only the beginning of the of a flurry of game-related murmurs and speculation in the leadup to next month’s conference.
