Engadget is reporting that its Japanese site received a cease-and-desist notice from a “mysterious Chinese firm” demanding that it take down images of what may–or may not be–a new, slimmer version of Sony’s PS3

Aerosmith and Guitar Hero Contest: Show Your Stuff on Stage

guitar_hero_aerosmith_cover.jpg
This summer, Guitar Hero masters will have the chance to win an opportunity to open for Aerosmith on stage. In each city the tour visits, two contest winners will perform. Winners also receive two tickets to the show, a Guitar Hero: Aerosmith prize package and a personal pre-show congratulatory meet-and-greet with none other than Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler (vocals) and Joe Perry (guitar).

This rock fame will not be for one night only: The winner’s performance will be filmed and posted on Aeroforceone.com as well as Aerosmith’s Youtube channel for all to see.

The classic rockers announced their entry into the Guitar Hero pantheon at a New York press conference last summer.

Find out how to enter after the jump.

New York Times: Palm Pre to launch in the first week of June

Guys, guess what? The Palm Pre is really, seriously, totally coming out, like, super soon. How soon? Well the New York Times, one of the most respected newspapers of our age, claims The Smartphone That Saved Palm (despite their denials) is due in the first week of June, which means the countdown to destruction just got a little shorter. Unless the Times is making stuff up. And let’s be honest — at this point, maybe they are. We can say this, however, the Pre is due, and it’s due soon, and if we don’t see it before WWDC, we’ll be pretty surprised. Our call? We’ve got a sneaking suspicion that all this speculation will be over before you know it. Like, tomorrow.

Slim PS3 update: mysterious Chinese firm issues a cease and desist… to Engadget

You know, one of these days, someone at one of these big companies is going to get this right. If you send a cease and desist about “leaked” photos of a supposed device, you’re basically saying, “Hey guys, those pictures are real.” Now, we can’t tell you with 100 percent assurance that that’s the case when it comes to those factory pics of rubber-gloved hands all over an apparently-new PS3 hardware design, but it doesn’t help anyone’s case when a Chinese company sends your Japanese wing a takedown notice. Keep in mind, since this thing isn’t from Sony, we can’t really be sure that it’s the real deal, but we’ll be honest — things are starting to look mighty suspicious. Text of one of the charming messages after the break. We’ll pause for comment now.

T-Mobile USA delays Android 1.5 rollout by a few days

We knew it was too good to be true, eternal curmudgeonly pessimists that we are — and sure enough, T-Mobile USA has put the kibosh on the start of its Android 1.5 rollout to G1 users. It seems that the build is still being “optimized” to “ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery,” which doesn’t necessarily explain why T-Mobile UK users are already enjoying this stuff — but then again, we’re not the engineers and tech support folks that have to put up with the fallout from a failed launch. The carrier thinks everything will be delayed by about a week, which means that we’re now looking at early June before everyone gets it.

Tony Hawks RIDE Game Includes Skateboard Controller

Tony Hawk Ride Skateboard.JPGFirst there was the keyboard. Then the mouse. Then the joystick, the paddle, the trackball, the gamepad, the light gun, the motion-sensing controller, virtual instruments…and now, the virtual skateboard.

On Monday, Activision Publishing unveiled the controller for “Tony Hawk: RIDE,” to be officially released later this year. Activision hasn’t released the price for RIDE, or the new skateboard controller that the company announced on Monday.

Players actually stand on the controller, which uses a gyroscope to sense the position of the board, and includes a seaprate sensor to determine whether the user is reaching down to grab the board in preparation for a virtual trick. Users can also physically spin the board 180 degrees, apparently for “fakie” tricks where the board is ridden backwards.

Gametrailers got an in-person demo from Tony itself, video that unfortunately focuses more on game footage and Mr. Hawk’s face himself rather than his interaction with the board. It’s unclear, for example, what the arrow keys on the side of the board will be used for .(Menu navigation? Gameplay? Setup?)

Touchpanel Laboratories shows off touchscreen with 9-point detection

It’s not exactly as impressive as a touch panel with unlimited points of input, but this new resistive touch panel with 9-point detection from Touchpanel Laboratories is still a cut above most and, better still, it seems to actually be ready to head into production. Unfortunately, details are otherwise a bit light, but the company does say that they’re able to make panels ranging in size from four to 15 inches. Touchpanel Labs didn’t stop there, however, and also took the opportunity to show off a touchpanel that can be installed on curved surfaces, as well as a touchpanel-based ordering system specifically designed for use in restaurants, which it intends to install in “bars located around the company.”
