Tag Your Photos In Windows Vista's Media Center

Matt Goyer who is part of the Windows Media Center team has now said that they are working on adding tag capabilities to the Windows Vista Media Center. This would mean that users could easily find their photos without the need to organize them into a folder structure. If you really wanted to you could throw all of your photos into one folder and tag them. You would then be able to browse the tags and it would almost be like you sorted them into separate folders!

I am surprised that Microsoft is throwing in this feature so late in the game. It is definitely needed because they are the cool thing right now. Sites like Del.icio.us, Yahoo MyWeb, and Technorati thrive off of the use of tags. Many people don’t realize it but Google uses tags in almost all of their services as well, except they call them labels!

If you are wondering what other features Media Center will have you can check out Matt’s post. He covers several of the new features that we will see in Vista’s Media Center.

Alienware M17x unboxed… by Mr. Bicep

We noted that Alienware’s “All Powerful” M17x gaming laptop was a hefty beast when we got our hands on it last month, so who better to unbox this 11.5-pound monster than Bruce Pechman, also known as Mr. Bicep? Apparently Bruce scored one of the first models off the line after betting the Alienware reps at E3 that he could do 17 straight one-arm lifts of the demo machine over his head, and his maxed-out rig packs a quad-core Core 2 Extreme, dual GeForce 260M graphics cards and a slot-loading Blu-ray burner — all of which arrived in this gigantic 32-pound box. Yeah, it’s a little ridiculous — but you know you want it.

Green Wedding Diamond

Green%20Wedding%20Diamond.jpg

Inhabitat: Wedding rings are traditional. Even the staunchest non-traditionalists have wedding rings. For some they are a status symbol, but for an environmentalist, eco-friendly wedding rings can show commitment to sustainability, protection of the environment, fair trade and conservation of the earth’s resources. The ring you choose for yourself and your fiance says a lot about you. Women are getting raped, kids are getting their hands hacked off, and people are getting killed all over the diamond trade in war-torn African nations like Sierra Leone, Angola and Congo. Without getting into too much depth about the moral issues and gritty details of it all, watch Blood Diamond and you’ll get the glimpse of why it’s important to buy your rings responsibly.

For both women and men’s rings, you’ll want to look for conflict-free diamonds and gems, and recycled metals. And while diamonds are a girl’s best friend, not every girl wants a diamond, and there are many gemstones out there that are just as beautiful and not as tainted. Cultured diamonds and gemstones are the most ecologically friendly gems, since they are not mined out of the earth, but grown in a lab. They are also significantly less expensive than geologically-grown gems, which has definite appeal in today’s economy.

Samsung Omnia Pro to be the Louvre B7610?

We’re actually surprised we didn’t make the connection earlier, but word on the street today is the the rumored Samsung Omnia Pro will actually be a renamed Louvre B7610, a set that’s been popping up a lot lately. Makes sense — the Louvre’s 3.5-inch WVGA AMOLED screen, 800MHz processor, and 5.1 megapixel camera match up nicely with the Omnia line. It’s running Windows Mobile 6.1 right now, but we wouldn’t be too surprised if the rumored August release date is held back to September or October to coincide with WinMo 6.5. One more pic after the break, couple more at the read links.

CrunchPad unboxed, handled on video

We heard earlier this month that the first official CrunchPad units would arrive soon, and it seems like Mike Arrington and company are making progress — here’s what looks to be semi-final hardware and packaging on video for the first time. Interestingly, the device is still plastic and somewhat chubby, not the 18mm-thick aluminum we’d heard earlier — and whoever’s in charge here won’t boot it, so we’ve yet to see the custom Linux / WebKit OS in action. It’s all due to drop in July, so we’ll know what’s what soon enough — for now, check out the vid after the break.

Update:
Looks like there is a short video of it in action, so we’ve stuck it after the break as well. It’s certainly an interesting idea, but we noticed some glitches here and there — we’ll see how cleaned up things are at launch.

Update 2: Oh, Mike Arrington. The king of all whispered rumors isn’t too happy that this video went out — he says it’s not “sanctioned or official,” and that “it’s certainly not the launch prototype… which doesn’t actually exist yet.” Of course it doesn’t, Mike.

[Thanks G]

Nokia E72 leaks out in promo video form

Looks like the E71 is about to be upstaged as Nokia’s premier business-class smartphone — someone in Espoo’s just hit the corporate YouTube account with this promo video for an E72. Upgrades include a five megapixel camera, a relocated headphone jack, and what looks to be an optical mouse instead of a D-pad — a welcome upgrade for click-happy S60. That’s all we know for now, but we’re digging for more — check the video after the break.

Update: The YouTube video’s been pulled, but luckily the guys from IntoMobile snagged it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Pioneer explodes your dashboard with new AVIC U, X and Z-series in-dash navigation systems

Pioneer isn’t going for subtle here: the company just unleashed a flurry of in-dash navigators, with a considerable amount of accoutrements on display. The units range through the flagship AVIC-Z110BT (pictured), “midrange” AVIC-X710BT and X910BT, and the AVIC-U310BT for rich people on a budget. Seriously, with a starting price of $599, none of this is suited for the cheap-and-simple set, but at least Pioneer backs up those pricetags with serious functionality. In the high end, the Z110BT includes an tilt-out XGA 7-inch touchscreen, MSN Direct tuner (for traffic and other live info), 4GB of internal storage, CD and DVD playback, and Bluetooth. Comforts include both voice recognition (“Find the nearest Starbucks”) and text-to-speech (“I wouldn’t do that, Dave”), along with iPod control and support for optional rear seat monitors and wireless headphones. Of course, all those perks aren’t cheap: the device retails for $1,600. The other units include smaller screens and subsets of the specs, on down to the 4.3-inch U310BT.

Pre gets NES emulation in Linux; our thumbs are in for a world of hurt

Sure, once you get Doom onto a device there isn’t much stopping you in the homebrew department, but we thought the implementation of an NES emulator on webOS outside of the Classic environment was worth noting — even if it happens to be astoundingly easy to pull off. All it requires is a quick trip to root on the device a compile of the FCEUltra NES emulator for Linux and bam, it’s good to go. Hit up the read link for instructions (we’re sure we’re simplifying things just a tad) — and no, the incredible appropriateness of using a Contra ROM to kick things off hasn’t escaped us.

Peepoo Bag

peepoop.jpgSpringwise: It’s a sobering fact that a full 40 percent of the world’s population—some 2.6 billion people—lack regular access to a toilet. Add to that the fact that one child dies every 15 seconds from water contamination, and it’s not hard to see the motivation behind the Peepoo bag.

One of the UN Millennium Development Goals, set in 2000, is to halve by 2015 the proportion of people without sustainable access to drinking water and sanitation, but so far progress has been minimal. With that in mind, Swedish Peepoople created the Peepoo bag to serve as a personal, portable and low-cost latrine for all the many people who don’t have one. Designed for use sitting, squatting or standing, the single-use, biodegradable plastic bag measures 14 by 38 cm and is lined with a urea-coated gauze layer that disinfects all waste. Used bags are odour-free for at least 24 hours and are safe for burial underground. Within two to four weeks after use, however, their contents get converted to high-quality fertiliser—something that’s also rare in many areas and so could become a source of income and further enrichment for an individual or village. Following field tests last year in Kenya and India, the Peepoo bag is scheduled to begin production this summer.
