Google CEO Schmidt avoids the dog food, captures memories with BlackBerry

Investment firm Allen & Co’s Sun Valley, Idaho media summit is a place for the world’s wealthiest and most influential decision-makers to chill out, enjoy a couple double Macallans on the rocks, and talk shop. It might even be a rare opportunity to escape to the comfort of a competitor’s product — a guilty pleasure you wouldn’t dream of indulging in more buttoned-up environments. Google CEO Eric Schmidt was caught snapping a candid shot from a BlackBerry (we’re pretty sure it’s a Curve 8900) at the event — and yes, granted, Google makes apps for BlackBerrys, but when there’s a phone that bears your company’s own name, it feels just a little bit like cheating, doesn’t it? We guess the big, ratty Google sticker adds back a sliver of street cred, but it’s not like this thing’s packing some furiously awesome camera that a Magic, Dream, or Hero doesn’t. How’s Gmail treatin’ you there, Eric? You’re using that, at least, right?

TechSaver Test: Costco.coms Deep Summer Savings

Canon EOS Rebel XSi with 55-250mm Zoom Lens

I’ve never been to Costco (only Sam’s Club), but I constantly hear from friends and family about the store’s great offers on electronics–not to mention 30-packs of TP and prime rib. Of course, Costco isn’t the first store that comes to my mind when I want to buy a computer or a digital camera, but I have to admit that I’m a bit curious.

If you’re a Costco member, then you’ve probably already taken advantage of some of the discount warehouse’s electronics deals. If you’re not a member, you can still purchase items from Costco via Costco.com. However, non-members must pay a 5 percent surcharge over the posted product price. For example, if you want to buy a $99.99 MP3 player from Costco and don’t have a membership number, you would have to pay an extra $5 for your online order. That 5 percent surcharge, though, can definitely make or break a good deal, so I wanted to investigate.

In today’s TechSaver Test, I picked Costco.com’s summer savings on the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi Digital SLR Camera (with 18-55mm IS Lens & 55-250mm IS Zoom Lens combo), the HP TouchSmart IQ546t 22″, the Creative ZEN MX 16GB portable media player, and the Mobile Edge Laptop Eco Messenger Bag. Find out if it’s better to be a Costco member or not, after the jump.

Sony Bravia HDTVs To Stream Netflix Movies

Sony-Bravia-KDL46V5100

Netflix is expanding the number of devices on which you can access its content to select Sony Bravia HDTVs, the companies announced Thursday.

Starting in the fall, Netflix subscribers will be able to access the company’s Watch Instantly library via Bravia Internet video-capable HDTVs and on Bravia sets that are compatible with Sony’s Internet video link module.

The sets will have to be connected to a broadband connection to connect to Netflix, as well as other content partners like Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Sports Illustrated, Sony Pictures, Crackle, Slacker, Epicurious.com, Concierge.com, Style.com, and Dailymotion.

“With Bravia, Sony joins a growing roster of world-class consumer electronics manufacturers providing Netflix ready devices — Microsoft (Xbox360), LG Electronics, Roku, Samsung, TiVo, [and] VIZIO,” Netflix wrote in a blog post.

Partnership Will Include More Best Buy Content on TiVo Boxes

Thumbnail image for tivo logo.JPG

TiVo is teaming up with Best Buy to offer TiVo-brand digital video recorders that integrate Best Buy content.

The two companies will develop a TiVo interface for DVRs sold at Best Buy that will integrate the retailer’s digital content services.

“Best Buy and TiVo will investigate development of a series of consumer tips and insights that can be easily accessed for all kinds of digital home experiences, and Best Buy expects to explore opportunities with TiVo to provide unique Best Buy solutions that enable viewers to take greater advantage of transactional opportunities through the television set,” they said.

What that actually entails has yet to be established, but in July 2008, TiVo teamed up with Amazon to let its customers purchase Amazon.com content from their TVs using the remote, so is a Best Buy purchase widget in the works?

Best Buy also sells MP3 downloads via its Rhapsody-powered digital music store, and offers video game downloads, so those offerings could be purchased through TiVos.

The companies also promised “on-demand access to Best Buy’s trusted perspective in consumer electronics” but whether that means TiVo access to Best Buy’s Geek Squad or just ads touting Best Buy products remains to be seen.

Yahoo Rewarding Users for Switching to Flickr

This article was written on June 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

FlickrlogoLast week I mentioned that Yahoo Photos is closing, and that there are several alternatives for replacement services. If you choose one of Yahoo’s selected services, it’s a one-click migration process. There are five different services available as alternatives, and some of them are offering incentives if you select them.

Of course Flickr is owned by Yahoo, and so obviously they’d like you to select their service. Radu, one of our readers, just switched from Yahoo Photos to a Flickr account and noticed that he had a Pro Account. After searching around for an explanation, he found this in his order history:

“June 17, 2007 – 3 months of Pro Account status fell from the sky on to You  (a gift from Flickr to say thanks!) – $0.00.”

So there’s your incentive for joining Flickr, a free Pro Account for three months which is usually priced at $24.95 per year.  A regular account offers 100 MB monthly upload limit (5MB per photo), 3 sets, and Photostream views are limited to the 200 most recent images. Compare that with a Pro account where you have unlimited uploads, storage, bandwidth, photosets, and more.

For those of you who know that Flickr is not for you, here are incentives from the other services:

  • Shutterfly: Get a free 8×8 inch photo book
  • Kodak Gallery: Get 20 free 4×6 inch prints
  • Snapfish: Get 50 free 4×6–inch prints

If free prints is what you’re looking for, Snapfish is the way to go! It appears as though Photobucket is the only one that doesn’t have any kind of incentive for switching to their service. If by chance they are and I’m just not aware of it, let us know in the comments so we can add it to the list.

Thanks for the tip Radu!

The Seven Types of Employees You Meet at Best Buy

Have you ever noticed that no matter which Best Buy you go into, you end up seeing the same people working there? That’s because there are seven types of people that work at every single Best Buy, with no exceptions.

A little known fact about me is that I worked at Best Buy for a couple of years in high school before getting fired for badly, badly abusing the employee discount system. But while there I learned a lot about the types of people that work in such an establishment, and I’ve noticed the same people in other Best Buys that I’ve been to since. So here are my list of the seven types of people you’ll find there, from a former employee’s perspective.

Next time you go to Best Buy, be on the lookout. I promise you’ll see at least a couple of these characters.

Car Audio Thug
You’ll find this guy in the car audio department. He’s got a big plug earring in each ear, some form of facial hair out of a late-90’s R&B video and tattoos on his forearms. He tears into the parking lot every day, tires squealing, bass blasting, in a late-model Civic that he’s dumped thousands of dollars into. You suspect that if he didn’t have a job selling car stereos, he’d be stealing them.

Marginally Cute Customer Service Girl
This girl works at the customer service desk or as a cashier. She’s maybe 17 years old and is kind of cute, but only when compared to the chubby piles of sadness she’s surrounded with. Because of this, she’s constantly hit on/sexually harassed by the guys who stock CDs and DVDs. She manages to take this in stride somehow and is almost infuriatingly perky and chipper. The chances of her having hooked up with the car audio thug are very high.

Grizzled Old Home Theater/Computer Sales Lifer
This guy has seen some shit. He’s a refugee from Lechmere or Tweeter or some other now-defunct retail outlet. He knows the most about the products he sells, which is why all the part-time high school employees send customers with actual questions his way. He’s got an air of resigned acceptance about his life, and while he’s all-business with customers, he’s got no filter with fellow employees. He tells inappropriate jokes and talks vulgarly about the managers behind their back. He has a strictly regimented cigarette break every 2.5 hours that he never, ever misses.

Pervy Geek Squad Guy
This guy searches every computer that’s in for service for porn, collecting everything he finds on an external HDD that he keeps in the back. He talks in graphic terms about what he’d do to women who he sees enter the store, but when he talks to them he’s totally professional. You suspect that he pleasures himself behind the plastic curtains, but you don’t want to confirm this. He’s got a level 80 World of Warcraft character. Somehow, he and the grizzled old sales guy are buddies and eat lunch together.

Sad Department Manager
This guy went to college then, after graduation, moved back home with his parents to save money. He ended up getting a job at Best Buy while he “figured stuff out.” It’s 10 years later and he still lives in the town he went to high school in, is balding, gained 15 pounds and is the manager of the digital cameras department. He’s perfectly adequate at his job, but talking to him for more than 5 minutes just makes you so damned sad.

Slick Careerist Manager
This guy wants to go right to the top. He runs team meetings, irons his blue polos, and gets a hard-on when talking about accessory sales and service-plan attach rates. He’s climbing the ladder with everything he’s got, and he spews corporate nonsense with the passion of a true believer. You’ve never seen him have an actual human interaction with someone, and you wonder if he even has any furniture in his apartment. He may be a robot.

Terrifying Loss-Prevention Guy
This guy is either an ex-con, an ex-cop or a vet. He is jacked yet forced to wear a yellow polo shirt, which creates a false sense of levity when dealing with him. He may seem friendly on the outside, but if you cross him he will snap your neck. He legitimately thinks that it’s unfair that Best Buy security guys aren’t allowed to carry sidearms. He has so much rage bottled up inside him that you know to just say hello and smile and otherwise steer clear.

LaCie Drive Bridges Your PC and HDTV

LaCinema.jpg

How do you deliver online HD video to your television? How about with a hard drive? LaCie just introduced the LaCinema Rugged, a multimedia drive the connects to your computer for loading and then to your HDTV for viewing.

The LaCinema Rugged works with both Windows and Macintosh computers, and offers 500GB of storage–enough for 700 movies, says LaCie. Connect with a USB 2.0 cable to load movies, music, or photos.

When you want to view that content on your TV, connect the drive with the included HDMI cable. The drive supports most standard and hi-def codecs, including H.264, MKV, WMV9, and MPEG-4.

The drive’s design is modeled after the LaCie Rugged Hard Disk and features a scratch-resistant aluminum shell, internal anti-shock absorbers, and a shock-resistant bumper. Get it from the LaCie site for $349.99.

CERN Stress-Testing Large Hadron Collider, Everyone Hide Under a Chair

CERN_LHC.jpg

CERN has completed repairs of the Large Hadron Collider, and has begun running massive stress tests ahead of its relaunch in October, according to Syfy’s DVICE.

Through the end of last month, the Collider sent out data to 11 computer centers across Europe, Asia, and North America, which in turn relayed the data to 140 locations in 33 countries for processing, according to the report. “A whopping 4 GB a second was cranked out from the LHC, though researchers predict that, while operating, the LHC will only send out around 1.3 GB of data.” Essentially, that means all systems are go.

In June, CERN announced that they were pushing the LHC’s startup back an extra month, from September to October. CERN shut the particle accelerator down last September due to a liquid helium leak caused by an electrical fault.

Generator: Apple to Pass Nokia in Market Share by 2013

Nokia_E71x.jpgNokia’s slice of the smartphone market in the U.S. is virtually non-existent, although it’s still the number one cell phone vendor worldwide. However, that could change soon. A new study from Generator Research predicts that Apple’s share of the smartphone market could exceed Nokia’s sometime within the next four years, according to Electronista.

In fact, the research firm sees the market virtually “reversing itself” by then. It predicts that Nokia could fall from 40 to 20 percent share as the iPhone increases to 33 percent by that point–with Apple shipping 77 million iPhones in 2011 alone.

Generator cites the usual reasons for Apple’s success here, basically saying it’s a combination of the iPhone itself and Apple’s App Store, according to the report. That $99 iPhone 3G can’t hurt either. Meanwhile, Nokia seems unable to get U.S. carriers to pick up their devices here in the U.S., aside from the occasional E62 or E71x on AT&T, and steadfastly refuses to push into the CDMA side (read: Verizon and Sprint).
