Universal bringing BD-Live integration to the iPhone, irony to starving children

Although Apple still hasn’t managed to achieve feature parity with any of its competitors by enabling Blu-ray playback in OS X, it looks like Universal’s bringing the mountain to the Mac — or at least the iPhone. At first, the upcoming special edition of Fast and Furious will feature integration with a special iPhone / iPod touch app that’ll allow viewers to control 360-degree models of the cars in the “Virtual Car Garage,” but later Universal releases will feature the ability to control movie playback, read annotations while watching your flick, and even download ancillary video content for later playback on the go. Sounds like pretty nifty stuff — let’s hope El Steve reconsiders his whole “bag of hurt” stance when he gets the demo.

We’ve seen quite a few rumors of a new touch-screen version of the LG Chocolate floating around the Internet, and most of them have to do with the Black Label version of the phone, the LG BL40, that’…

Bluetooth in iPod Touch: Not Listed as a Spec…?

ipod touch bluetooth final.jpg

If you were to buy an iPod touch today, you’d find a Bluetooth radio in it with support for Bluetooth stereo headsets, personal area networking, and as a A/V remote control.  Apple does a nice job spelling out what profiles are supported in a Knowledge Base article on its Web site.

But for some crazy reason, Apple’s official iPod touch tech specs Web page disavows all knowledge of a Bluetooth radio in the touch.  The word “Bluetooth” is nowhere to be found on the page, not even in the “wireless” category.

Paws-On: Enviro-Bear 2010 for iPhone Is a Riveting Ride

iPhone developer Justin Smith deserves a design award for Enviro-Bear 2010, the most mind-blowingly awesome iPhone game ever made. The objective of the game is quite serious: You are a bear driving a car in a race against time to find enough stuff to eat before going into hibernation; winter arrives any minute now! For sustenance, you collect fish and berries that smash into your windshield. The challenge lies in what is presumably the bear’s handicap: He appears to be mostly amputated, with only one paw to maneuver the vehicle and grab his prey. Enviro-Bear is $1 in the App Store.

Toshiba Introduces New Frames, New Content

ToshibaFrame.jpg

The trend in digital frames is to have them display a lot more than just photos from junior’s school play. Toshiba introduced three digital photo frames today, but the real story is the content you can show on them.

The frames includes a white 8-inch frame (DMF82XWU, $179.99), a black 8-inch frame (DMF82XKU, $179.99), and a black 10-inch frame (DMF102XKU, $229.99). All three will be available in August. The two 8-inch frames offer an acrylic front finish and a reflective trim, and the 10-inch is slim with a faceplace design.

Toshiba’s partnership with FrameChannel, however, turns these frames household information centers. Create a FrameChannel account and you can customize your frame with celebrity news, sports scores, weather forecasts, stock quotes, and much more. All three frames deliver real-time content over WiFi connections.

You can also use these connected frames to easily send or receive photos from friends and family. FrameChannel accounts work with accounts from Flickr, Photobucket, Facebook, and more. Look for them on the Toshiba site when they’re released next month.

Electromagnetic invisibility a precursor to the real thing?

This could either be that one giant leap, or just another in a long sequence of multidirectional small steps on the Quixotic quest for undetectability. So-called dc metamaterials are the chief culprit for inciting our interest anew, as researchers from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona have found a way to use them to render metallic objects invisible to low frequency electromagnetic waves. Composed of irregular networks of superconductors, the metamaterials are capable of granting superpowers altering the magnetic field of materials, and in theory, this advance could aid magnetic imaging in medical settings and also help cloak military vessels from magnetic detection. Of course, there’s still the whole “oh, now we need a working prototype” conundrum, but hey, at least we’ve got the gears turning in the right direction.

Robot Doraemon travels back in time to shame Japanese children to success

If you’re one of those nerds, you’re probably quite stoked at the prospect of a real, honest-to-goodness Doraemon in your living room. And even if not, surely we can all agree that this guy is pretty damn cute, right? This ear-less, time travelin’ cat features motion, light, heat, and sound sensors that let it react to its environment with a whole slew of facial features and vocal mannerisms that mean nothing to us, seeing as how it’s communicating in Japanese. This guy is available from Bandai, starting September 3rd — in the meantime, check out a few pics snapped at the Tokyo Toy Show below.

Kingston unveils 256GB thumb drive for well-heeled memory fiends

We’re sure that it’s only a matter of moments before a 256GB thumb drive this bulky is something of a joke — hell, it wasn’t so terribly long ago that cramming 256MB into something this size was an accomplishment. That said, if you’re a netbook user looking for a storage bump, it looks like Kingston’s got your back: this guy boasts transfer rates of up to 20 MB/sec. read and 10 MB/sec. write, and for all of you Vista fans, supports Windows ReadyBoost. Now, for the bad news: only available in Europe and the UK, and custom made upon your order (presumably after the check clears) this modern technological marvel will run you £565.67 ($924).
