An electric unicycle that doesn’t clown around

The wheel is being reinvented yet again, this time in the form of the eniCycle by Slovenian inventor Aleksander Polutnik. Think of the foot rests as handle bars, with directional steering done by pressing on the left or right foot rest, and the speed controlled by leaning forward or backward.

Less of a Segway clone than the Orbis Urban Mobility Vehicle, this self-balancing electric unicycle is said to be so intuitive, the average new rider just needs a maximum of 30 minutes to master it. But don’t take our word for it. Check out the video after the jump to make up your mind as The Gadget Show takes up the challenge. In fact, you may get to try out the eniCycle in person sooner than you can say “gyroscopic stabilization,” as Polutnik’s on a one-wheel crusade to get this mass-produced early.

RoboCar package gives students taste of things to come

For those who want a shot at the DARPA Grand Challenge but can’t afford the gear, a Japanese company is offering a 1/10-scale robot-powered model car with all the bells and whistles so they can at least get their autonomous feet wet.

It’s still not …

Nokia N900 puts on makeup, does hair for leaked press shot

Normally, we’d take a look at something like this and say, “yeah, could be real, could be fake.” Goodness knows there are enough mega-talented graphic designers in the world with the free time to craft this. Here’s the thing, though: this phone / MID hybrid — the latest in Nokia’s Internet Tablet series — has already been outed enough times so that we know this has to be a genuine press shot. If we had to guess, Espoo fashioned it in preparation for its Nokia World event in Germany early next month where the N900 will presumably be announced into officialdom; there’s no sign on when or how the T-Mobile USA version will be unveiled, but we’re getting pretty amped for it.

The 404 410: Where we’re finally getting things done

Beware the CarMac.

(Credit: Caroline McCarthy)

It’s not easy doing a show without Wilson G. Tang, but luckily our good friend CarMac steps into the game to help us out! Today, we tackle Cable versus Fios, Adult Twitter clones, and McDonalds’ suspicious new Web site, 365black.com.

CNET reporter Caroline McCarthy fills in for Wilson while he’s off in Rhode Island dining fine at a Red Lobster, but we ain’t complaining because CarMac represents 1 out of 7 total females that listen to The 404. Jeff takes the first quarter of the show to complain about Verizon Fios not running his stick and puck games on television, but after that’s over, we get to more important stories like this a spicy new Twitter offshoot.

Stick around for another Call from the Public courtesy of Sally Henderson and Sean Connery, and stay tuned to the rest of this week’s Wilson-less shows!

Zune HD box contents spotted at Best Buy

We’ve already gotten a glimpse of the Zune HD’s packaging courtesy of Best Buy’s big preview event this past weekend — but what about the contents of said packaging? Therein lies excitement. Excitement like some giant fold-out instructions, a USB cable, and a pair of headphones that seem to be more or less identical to the ones that came with the Zune 120 — oh, and a little thing called the Zune HD. Hit up the link below for a closer look, and a couple more demo videos for those that still can’t get enough of the thing.

Zip-Together Headphone Cords Eliminate Tangles

London-based designer Lee Washington has a solution to the problem of earbud cords getting tangled up: He’s made it so they can zip together, like the opposing sides of a zip-lock baggie.

It’s a clever and elegant solution — though it looks like the tradeoff is that it makes one of the two cords a bit stiffer and less flexible than before.

Of course, his solution is moot if you know the proper way to wrap headphone cords so they don’t get tangled.

Lee Washington has a bunch of other business ideas, too, such as paperclips shaped like little men. Cute! No word on if or when his zip-together headphones will be commercially available.

Premium Cornflakes, Minimalist Packaging

I was walking through the cereal aisle in a nice big suburban Tokyo supermarket (Machida I think) and something caught my eye. It’s amazing that in a place where every brand is competing for eyeballs with bright colors and big fonts, that some cereal boxes from Nihon Shokuhin would stand out precisely because they don’t. This is why we love covering packaging trends for our clients.

If Google made cereal, this is what it would look like.

Such a simple, minimalist box gives away the “premium” contents, which is helpful since they’re called “Premium Cornflakes”. There’s also a nice bit of blog-buzz here: 1, 2, 3, 4.

Mysterious Android MID poses for yet more pics, reads Engadget

You know, if you’re trying to get our attention, there are worse ways to go about it than by releasing photos of a mystery gadget proudly displaying our homepage. And though there is no credible word yet on the origin of all these Android MID pics that keep making the rounds, there has been much speculation. As SlashGear points out, the device has more than a passing resemblance to the Wallet, which France’s eviGroup has been threatening to lay on the world since back in May (a 5-inch touchscreen device touted as “halfway between a cellphone and a TabletPC”). And if that isn’t enough, someone named focus3G has been furiously posting new pics of the thing on his Twitpic account for two weeks now — we’ve contacted him for an explanation to no avail (not yet, at least). But what do you think? Hit the gallery below, and let the speculation begin.
