Kanguru takes eSATA + USB e-Flash drive to 64GB

We’d be stretching things ever-so-slightly if we said Kanguru’s newest e-Flash drive was just a wee bit behind schedule, but at least the unit — which was originally slated for a January release — is finally real. If you’ll recall from last year, this dual-sided drive includes a USB 2.0 connector for mass compatibility and a powered eSATA port for blazing performance. Until now, however, you’ve had to deal with capacities of 32GB and smaller, but the new 64GB iteration changes all that for good. Too bad there’s nary a mention of this thing’s MSRP, but we’d go ahead and brace for the worst if we were you.

Sanyo’s Gorilla Lite PND packs 4GB in an incredibly thin frame

Sanyo, a company best known among mid-80s McKean Elementary school students for the portable cassette recorder Henry Hutchinson used to incessantly play “Mr. Telephone Man” by New Edition (true story), seems to be going from strength to strength with its Gorilla line of handheld PNDs. The NV-LB50DT Gorilla Lite packs a 5-inch touchscreen, LED backlight, and 4GB SSD in a package a mere 18.8mm thin. The device also features a 1Seg digital TV tuner, an accelerometer for switching between landscape and portrait mode, support for MP4, JPEG, MP3, and WMA playback, and Sanyo ECO mode (which tells you if your driving style is good or bad for the environment). Sure, this isn’t the DVD playing, CD-ripping powerhorse that we last saw from the company, but you probably knew that as soon as you saw the word “Lite” in the name. Available soon for a price to be determined.

Get Windows 7 Ultimate for free… by throwing a party

Dying to throw a party where everyone goes home alone? Microsoft’s got you covered. Redmond’s looking for Windows 7 fans to throw launch parties from October 22-29, and if you’re chosen, you’ll get a free “Signature Edition” of Windows 7 Ultimate, free party favors, and a chance to win a PC valued at $750. Sure, you’ll have to suck up your pride and invite your friends to a party with a theme like “setting up with ease” or “family friendly fun,” but if you’re willing to throw a party where everyone is apparently supposed to sit around a laptop and then go out and buy something, well, we’re guessing you don’t have too much pride to begin with.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Optinvent promises to offer Clear Vu HMD for less than $200

While some may say that price isn’t the main factor that’s been holding HMDs back from mass acceptance, France’s Optinvent (a spin-off of Thomson S.A.) is apparently of that opinion, and it’s now promising to deliver a full-fledged HMD for less than $200 by the end of next year. In addition to their trend-setting good looks (to be further refined in the final version), the company’s so-called Clear Vu goggles make use of a reflection system that displays images in the wearer’s field of vision rather than completely obstructing it, which the company says opens to the door a whole host of augmented reality possibilities — like heads-up GPS directions, for instance. Unfortunately, the company isn’t offering much in the way of actual specs just yet, although it does say the goggles will display an image size equivalent to a 71-inch TV placed 2.5 meters away.

LG Watch Phone GD910 hands-on photos, video

It was the big story of CES 2009, but only now has LG put the finishing touches to its first watch phone and put it on sale, if you know where to look. You can only buy the LG GD910 through one Orange shop in the U.K.–in Bond Street, London–at the moment, on pay as you go tariff 500 British pounds, although there will be a limited number available online later this month (register your interest here).

We had the chance to try one out briefly earlier Wednesday, and what struck us was that it’s actually a pretty basic device. We’re so used to seeing phones packed with features, apps, and a hundred ways to access your Twitter feed on the toilet, this felt like a letdown.

LG is making a big deal of the fact this isn’t just a phone, it’s a 3G phone, and a superfast HSDPA one at that. But before you get carried away thinking that you’ll be able to access the Internet, check your e-mails and so forth, be warned–the 3G is just for video calls. (Does anyone know anyone who actually makes these?) To be fair, there’s no way you would want something like a browser on this thing, as the screen is just 36 millimeters (1.4 inches), but it still seemed weird to us.

There are just three buttons on the whole of the device, at the edge, which you use for bringing up contextual menus and the like. You use the touch screen for everything else.

Calling people, video or otherwise, is easy enough. If they’re in your phone book already, you simply select their name. If not, typing numbers on the touch screen is much more straightforward than you might think–the soft keys on the touch screen have enough space between them so you can type speedily without errors.

Video and voice calls are all piped through the internal speaker, turning the watch into a normal speakerphone. You might feel rather foolish and cause much irritation around you, but you don’t have to bring the watch up to your mouth to be heard, unless you’re trying out your best Dick Tracy impression.

You’ll feel even more of a fool if you use the Bluetooth headset LG provides, though–ignoring the fact that everyone using headsets should be made to sign a register for the good of society, it has a really long microphone arm, straight from the early naughties. Then again, with the headset, people around you won’t be able to hear the other end of your conversation, so it’s not all bad.

Buffalo intros 4TB TeraStation NAS

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a TeraStation from Buffalo, and in the meantime the company has been really going wild with the lilliputian memory devices, so it’s nice to see something substantial in this space for a change. The latest TeraStation NAS integrates with Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 for up to 4TB storage. Of course, this particular Windows release has been available since late 2006, so we’re not too terribly impressed — but the company seems to think that it’s important for you to know all about it. In addition, this bad boy has support for Raid 5/0/1 and VSS, and rocks four hot-swappable drive bays. The WS-Q2.0TL/R5 (2TB) is available for ¥158,000 ($1,658), while the WS-Q4.0TL/R5 (4TB) will set you back ¥198,000 ($2,077). And no, it won’t fit in your pocket.
