Leica M9 and X1 leak out ahead of schedule

Wondering what Leica has up its sleeve for that destined-to-be-overshadowed event on the 9th? Well, wonder no more: these pics of the long-rumored M9 and something called the X1 just leaked out, along with some specs. We’re told the M9 will sport a full-frame 18.2 megapixel sensor and improved low-light performance, but the real surprise is the X1, pictured above, which’ll supposedly have a 12 megapixel APS-C sensor, a fixed 24mm lens and that funky grip handle, by which we’re oddly fascinated. Maybe Leica’s got some surprises left for the 9th after all — pic of the M9 after the break.

Apple TV to Receive Upgrade at Sept. 9 Event, Analyst Guesses (Updated)

appletv
Steve Jobs’ “forgotten child,” the Apple TV, might receive an upgrade at Apple’s media event taking place Sept. 9, predicts an analyst.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster noted that the delivery time for the 40GB Apple TV has changed from 24 hours to 1-2 week delivery, which he finds “puzzling ahead of next week’s event,” The Loop reported. Update: The Loop has posted an update citing “very reliable” anonymous sources who say there will be no Apple TV refresh at the Sept. 9 event.

Add to that the fact Apple hasn’t refreshed the Apple TV in two years, and Munster infers Apple may phase out the 40GB model and reduce the price of the 160GB version (currently $330) to make room for a newer model, presumably with more hard-drive space.

Apple this week sent out invites for a Sept. 9 media event to be held in San Francisco. Though Apple has not disclosed what will be announced, the company has traditionally held events every September for the past several years, and they’ve always centered on iTunes or iPods.

We believe the prediction of an Apple TV refresh is plausible, but we don’t find that nearly as interesting as the possibility that Apple will add cameras to its iPod Nano, iPod Touch and possibly even the iPod Classic next week. Read Wired.com’s predictions and analysis of what will likely be announced Sept. 9. And look forward to our liveblog and news coverage at the event.

Nokia X6 confirmed to sport a capacitive display, we can finally exhale

Ladies and gentlemen, our long, global nightmare is over. Alright, that’s a significant overstatement — but Nokia’s lack of capacitive adoption has unquestionably hurt opinion of its 5800 and N97 models, the first to use its touch-ready S60 5th Edition platform. Happily, afterdawn.com is reporting — and we’ve been able to independently confirm — that the X6 will indeed be using a capacitive display, something that we suspect will significantly improve usability if you’re not interested in using a stylus (or plectrum, as the case may be) to navigate your way through the interface. For the record, Samsung’s already proven that S60 5th is totally doable with capacitive tech on its i8910 HD, so we’re sure Nokia’s going to be able to pull this off with aplomb — the real question might be whether this signals a wholesale abandonment of resistive across the range. Since resistive’s cheaper, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it continue to hang around on the low end for some time to come, but at least we’ve now got the choice. Sadly, it’s too late to save the N900’s screen — but now that Maemo’s made the bold leap into GSM telephony, maybe we’ll see some worthy capacitive action the next time around.

Samsung LED TV ads called ‘misleading’ by U.K. authority

(Credit: DisplaySearchBlog)

When Samsung’s first edge-lit LED-backlit LCD displays hit stores last spring, we were careful to point out that despite the company’s use of the term “LED TV” to describe the sets, they were just LCD displays with a fancier backlight. That didn’t stop Samsung from …

Sony announces VAIO X ultraportable

Sony just announced the VAIO X at IFA 2009, a half-inch thin ultraportable with an 11.1-inch screen and a new all-day battery that “will set the new standard for stamina.” The machine’s built of carbon fiber, so it weighs just a pound and a half, and we’re assuming it’s CULV-based, although there’s no hard specs at the moment. We’re racing to find out more, we’ll let you know.

Update:
We grabbed some shots of the X in the flesh, but they won’t let us hold it, and specs are still a mystery.

Update 2: Well, no wonder the battery lasts all day — we’re told the VAIO X currently has an Atom processor, although final specs haven’t been locked in. Still — Atom? Whatever Sony’s going to charge for this thing is way too much.

Official: XPERIA X2 launching Q4, Windows Mobile 6.5 onboard (video)

If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for some real news on the XPERIA X2, wait no longer. News has just broken that the re-styled, gutted refresh of Sony Ericsson’s popular (and expensive) X1 is due to hit “selected markets” in Q4. According to a post on SE’s Xperiancers blog, the company is in talks with various carries right now, and will be detailing the plans in the coming weeks. Additionally, the blog delivers some info on the device itself, calling out its 8.1 megapixel camera, inclusion of a standard 4GB microSD card, and 13 pre-loaded “panels” in its reworked Windows Mobile skin (which appears to have a new SDK for the forthcoming OS update). Oh, and speaking of Windows Mobile, it’ll be shipping with 6.5 onboard. To learn much, much more, check the two videos after the break. We’ll also be grabbing an up close and personal hands-on with the device in a few moments, so keep your inter-set tuned to the Engadget channel.

The 404 417: Where if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself

Mmm, Snow Leopard…delish.

(Credit: Flickr/Photogirl612)

After going off on a rant in the preshow, we settle down for a hilarious episode, inspired by the near-extinct Snow Leopard. Jeff opens it up with a complete horror story about his experience trying to buy the new Mac OS upgrade from a local big box retailer. We won’t name names, but clearly this company is hiring all kind of unqualified employees, and Jeff’s had about enough.

Everyone’s favorite cell phone for the elderly, the Jitterbug, is now available on Verizon Wireless for senior citizens who want to switch over to nationwide coverage. Well, we certainly can’t talk about such a story without busting out a few impressions, so this time around we try to combo them up…look out for Verbose Space Beer Old Vampire!

In other news, the God of War collection is coming to Blu-ray for PS3, but what seems like a great two-for-one deal is actually a slice of the larger PS3 ripoff: since the console doesn’t support older games, owners of the new PS3 Slim are forced to pay for the new package if they want to play this series, instead of just popping in an old disc like you could with previous PlayStations. It’s true that the HD upgrade adds a lot of value to this offering, but it still seems like a shady deal.

What do you think? Leave us a voice mail at 1-866-404-CNET and let us know your thoughts on the PS3 Slim or tell us about the worst job you’ve ever worked. We want to hear your horror stories!
