Walmart expands Durabrand DVD player recall to 4.2 million

You know what they say about getting what you pay for? Well, the adage has turned out to be truer than normal in this case. Walmart, which sold some uber-cheap (like, $18 – $29 cheap) Durabrand DVD players in the US and the UK, recently issued a recall for 1.5 million of the units due to 12 reported cases of overheating. The malfunctions caused various degrees of property damage, but no injuries, and now, as a result of several more reported cases of the same issue, the recall has been upped to cover 4.2 million devices. The recall, which originally covered only the silver units sold, has now been expanded to cover both the pink and purple DVD players which were sold between January 2006 and July 2009 exclusively at Walmart stores in the US and Walmart-owned ASDA stores in the UK. Seriously, this just leaves us wondering: how many of these bad boys did they sell?

NEC releases 5:4 monitor: Cue the yawns

All glory to the Hypnotoad!

(Credit: NEC)

You know, I’d almost forgotten they still make these. When i say “these,” I’m of course referring to standard aspect ratio monitors. With the advent of wide-screen 16:10 and now 16:9 monitors, the last three to four years has seen 4:3 and 5:4 monitors go the way of the Dodo.

NEC seems determined that we don’t forget standard aspect ratios and in September will be releasing the 19-inch MultiSync EA190M. According to NEC, the display is designed for “a variety of business environments, government applications, and education users.”

Just what government applications are we talking about here? In every episode of “24” I’ve ever seen, everyone uses wide-screen, 24-inch Dells. This monitor must be for less well-funded government divisions.

According to NEC, the EA190M consumes 50 percent less energy and contains 50 percent less mercury than traditional LCD monitors. It has a one-touch button to go into EcoMode. This most likely puts a cap on the brightness since a display’s brightness is the main determining factor for power consumption.

Here are a few other features of the EA190M:…

HP’s iPAQ K3 Obsidian gets FCC approval enroute to AT&T

Sure, we could beat around the bush and say, “well, the test report calls it an iPAQ and it’s got both GSM and HSPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, so it’s probably headed to AT&T” — but let’s cut to the chase for once, shall we? Despite much of the documentation still falling under confidentiality, HP’s latest phone has “AT&T SKU” written right on its publicly-available ID label, so that pretty much settles that. Interestingly, the documentation repeatedly refers to the new WinMo-powered handset as the “iPAQ KB1,” but we have every reason to believe this is the K3 Obsidian that’s been floating around for a while now. To be fair, we don’t know whether that’s a go-to-market name — nor do we know the price or launch date, for that matter — whatever it’s called, we can now take comfort in the knowledge that it’ll be 100 percent legal to use on American soil.

Will Motorola Launch Android With T-Mobile?

The plot is getting thicker regarding Motorola’s Sept. 10 launch of their first Android phone. Specifically: who’s the carrier?

I’m betting on T-Mobile. The two main keynote speakers at the Mobilize conference where the announcement is being held are Motorola’s Sanjay Jha and T-Mobile’s CTO Cole Brodman. Sounds cozy.

The process of elimination also leads us to T-Mobile. A Verizon rep told TheStreet.com they don’t plan to be at the San Francisco event, and I’ve spoken to industry sources that say Sprint won’t be hanging around, either. Both carriers intend to introduce Android phones this year, they just won’t be this one.

An AT&T rep played coy, saying he didn’t want to talk about future product releases. But analyst Tero Kuittinen, quoted in TheStreet.com, said they’re not in bed with Motorola on Android either. That fits with the cautious tone I heard from Motorola CEO Ralph de la Vega back in 2008, when he said that AT&T might only accept a highly customized version of Android.

That leaves T-Mobile, who currently monopolize Android in the US. Brodman said in July that “we’ll have more Android products out this year,” but specifically excluded HTC’s upcoming Hero phone. It’ll be interesting to see how T-Mobile spins this Motorola product, though, as when they announced the MyTouch 3G, Brodman said the MyTouch 3G, not an upcoming device, was “our real big bet for 2009.”

Considering Jha has basically staked his company on Android phones, let’s hope the upcoming Motorola release is a big deal for whoever will carry it.

e-Detail’s dual-screen Prezenter gets Atom upgrade, becomes Averatec PT1400

Last we saw e-Detail’s dual-screen Prezenter tablet it packed an underpowered AMD Geode processor, a hefty $1,800 price tag, and no US release date to speak of. While it’s been well over a year now, it looks like most of those have now changed for the better, with the device apparently finding a new distributor and a few new upgrades. Now branded as the Averatec PT-1400 “Prezenter,” the device packs the same dual 14-inch and 7-inch touchscreens as before, but gets a more powerful Atom Z520 processor (upgradeable to a Z540), along with an 80GB hard drive (or optional SSD), 1GB of RAM, and 802.11n WiFi, among other standard specs. Unfortunately, there’s no word on a price just yet, but it will apparently go on sale in North America, Japan and Korea sometime this month, and be available in your choice of black or white. A slightly smaller 12-inch version is also apparently set to follow at a later, unspecified date.

Laid off? Get a Mycubi

mycubi.jpg

For the ever increasing amount of Americans who are self employed, a new website has just been launched which helps them market their services to their local area.

On Mycubi.com everyone creates a free mini website (called a Cubi) which lets everyone in their local area know what services they offer. Even those who have regular jobs can use the site to find odd jobs based on their skills. Visitors to the site are then able to look on their local area map to see what home based services are being offered in any particular area. For those who don’t necessarily want the whole world to know where they live, there is the option of showing “General Area”: of where you are based so people still know you aren’t too far away.

In these recessionary times, MyCubi.com also provides a platform for those who have been recently laid off try and set up shop from home.
