Video: Obscura Digital shows off CueLight ‘interactive’ pool table

The folks at Obscura Digital sure aren’t strangers to massive, interactive displays, but they may just have delivered their most impressive but actually (somewhat) attainable rig to date with their new CueLight ‘interactive’ pool table. Now featured at both the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and Esquire’s SoHo “Ultimate Bachelor Pad,” the deceptively simple setup uses a projection system and a few sensors to track the balls and display some suitably jaw-dropping effects on any pool table you supply — ’cause, you know, an actual screen would be a bit tricky. Of course, the “you” in this case is more likely to be a swanky establishment of some sort, but there’s nothing stopping you from chiming in and asking for a quote for that games room you’re building. Need a little more incentive? Check out the video after the break.

PS3 Slim sells 1 million units in 3 weeks, chin chin!

We’re not big into tracking sales figures but a million consoles sold is pretty notable. Especially when your 3 year-old console achieves that number in just 3 weeks. Of course, the sale bump is the result of the PS3 receiving a price adjustment, some minor cosmetic slimming, and internal tinkering that most notably decreased power draw (and noise). Good on ya Sony. But we’d love to see auction sales statistics for the same three weeks — we expect there was an appreciable uptick in demand for first gen consoles with hardware-based PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and 4x USB ports immediately after the PS3 Slim was announced, and its mysteries revealed.

Gymnobot looks to fish for inspiration, a little companionship

Alright, so it may not be quite as terrifying as something like Carnegie Mellon’s robotic snake or NC State’s remote-control bats, but this so-called Gymnobot from the University of Bath does boast some animal-mimicking abilities of its own and, if all goes as planned, it could eventually grow a whole lot bigger. Its secret is a single fin underneath its body that mimics the way a knifefish swims, which just so happens to also be an extremely efficient way for a robot to propel itself through the water. That, the researchers say, could eventually be adapted for larger autonomous or remotely operated vehicles, would be able to maneuver in shallow water and other areas that are problematic for propeller-driven craft. Head on past the break to check it out in action.

13 PS3 motion control games confirmed for next year, motion-enhanced Biohazard 5 coming Spring 2010

Sure, the company’s Tokyo Game Show keynote was a bit of a bore, but in a second press conference for Japanese media, Sony did what it could to make up for it by revealing Biohazard 5: Alternative Edition, the first PS3 title we’ve heard of to support the new motion controllers — and better still, it’s due out Spring 2010. Also confirmed is the existence of 13 first-party titles with motion support coming at some point next year, including Pain, EyePet and Flower. Both Biohazard 5 (known in the US as Resident Evil 5) and a LittleBigPlanet tech demo were shown on stage, and pics from the announcement are being uploaded now, so stay tuned!

Update: Some new details of the LittleBigPlanet motion control demo from our friend Ittousai of Engadget Japan. In the presentation, one player was playing the normal way via DualShock while a second person was “assisting” by means of the motion control.

Windows 7 Video Recorded In Irony-Free Zone

I really want this to be sincere, I really do. But the fact is, I don’t think this could possibly be for real. This video is most likely a social experiment conducted by the Carnegie Mellon psychology department with a partnership through Microsoft. It’s like the folks at Redmond took a page from Arthur Kade’s playbok. There really isn’t any other viable explanation. Don’t believe me? Check out the hilarious “edited” video below and tell me the original clip wasn’t produced with  parody in mind.

Honda’s U3-X Personal Mobility Device is the Segway of unicycles

Yeah, we’ve seen a self-balancing unicycle before, but the brand new U3-X from Honda takes it to another level. A creepy-sterile, awesomely futuristic Honda level, to be precise. What makes the U3-X particularly interesting is it has the regular large wheel of a unicycle, but that wheel is actually made up of several small wheels in a series, which can rotate independently, meaning that the device can go forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally, all being controlled with a simple lean. Honda credits its ASIMO research for this multi-directional capability, though we’re not sure we see it — ASIMO is biped, after all — but far be it from us to discredit an excuse to keep up the good work on the ASIMO front. Right now the “experimental model” of the U3-X gets a single hour of battery and weighs under 22 pounds, with a seat and foot rests that fold into the device for extra portability. No word of course on when the thing might make it to market, but Honda plans to show it off next month at the Tokyo Motor Show. A devastatingly short video of the U3-X in action is after the break.

TabletKiosk rises from the ashes, pops Atom CPUs into hideous new UMPC / tablet line

Sheesh — whatever happened to TabletKiosk, anyway? Aside from one random slate PC tailored for the medical industry, we haven’t seen anything meaningful from these guys since 2008. And yes, that includes the present day. Oh sure, the company’s newest trifecta of machines — which includes the 7-inch eo a7330D, 7-inch eo TufTab a7230XD and 12.1-inch Sahara NetSlate a230T — may use the incredibly mighty Atom CPU now, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re all uglier than sin itself. In fairness, all three are designed more for the enterprise market than for fashion conscious consumers, but still, we’re struggling to see any design improvements here compared to the wares this outfit was pushing way back in 2007. If you truly believe that beauty’s on the inside, hit the read link for all the dirt.

Wacom adds multi-touch to its tablets

The Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch

Wacom’s pressure-sensitive tablets have already been pretty great at what they do, but they’ve added a simple and appreciated wrinkle for Windows 7 and Mac OSX multitouch addicts: their new pads now double as giant multitouch pads, too.

Nintendo finally confirms new $199 Wii price

After being stuck so long at $249, we can hardly believe the Wii is “pulling a PS3” and going down in price at last — outside of the insurmountable mountains of evidence we had of the price drop before Nintendo could get around to confirming it, of course. The console will begin retailing for $199.99 (~$200 for us math types) on September 27, which is this Sunday.

Update: The Wii will fall to ¥20,000 in Japan, which represents a 20 percent drop.

Update 2: Looks like those of you getting paid in Euros will be asked to shell out €199.99.
