Happy 3rd birthday Engadget HD!

Yes we can’t believe it either, but as of today Engadget HD is officially done with the terrible twos. The EHD crew’s made us proud ever since their first post 36 months ago by bringing all of you the best HD news coverage they can, and in that time they’ve written over 11,672 posts and recorded 125 podcasts, which is pretty crazy. We’re looking forward to many more years of HD goodness, but of course none of this would be possible without all of you Engdaget HD readers, so go ahead and give yourselves a pat on the back — and then get back to reading.

Meizu M8 Second Edition rights all of the M8’s wrongs, or not

You could fault the infamous M8 for being eons late; you could fault it for shipping without a quadband EDGE / WiFi / 3G version; you could fault it for dancing in and out of the straight-up iPhone ripoff arena from its very inception; you could fault it for being really hard to find and buy outside of China. Most of that bellyaching can’t be solved with a few tweaks here and there, but that’s not stopping Meizu from whipping up a facelifted M8 SE with a few carefully-planned changes here and there. As far as we can tell this isn’t the 3G remake we’ve all been waiting for, rather just a handful of minor touch-ups to keep the original model fresh for a while longer: better signal strength, an easier-to-use SIM slot, new firmware, and new packaging, just to name a few. Sounds like it’ll be shipping for 1,999 yuan (about $293) in China, which would actually make this a nearly-perfect midrange unlocked Android set.

Hands On: Olympus E-P1 Firmware Update; No Improvement

The Micro Four Thirds Olympus E-P1 offers DSLR image quality but is much smaller than most DSLRs. This camera is pleasing on so many levels–but disappointing when it comes to auto-focusing speed. Not only is it not as fast as a tradition DSLR, but even some point-and-shoots offer faster performance.  (See our full review on PC Mag.com)

Earlier this month, Olympus released firmware updates to the E-P1’s body,14-42mm, and 17mm lenses. The purpose of the updates: to improve focusing speeds. 
I spent some time today with the E-P1, 14-42mm lens, Shooting Digital’s Shutter Lag test, and I’ve come to the conclusion there’s not much improvement in focusing speeds. Before the update, the camera took an average of 1.3 seconds to focus and shoot. After the update, it averaged 1.2 seconds. A traditional DSLR with auto-focus can focus in less than half that time; the Canon D50 averages just .5 seconds.

Video: Intel-powered set-top box running Flash, decoding HD video

Intel’s making a big TV push here at IDF, and a lot of it centers around the CE 3100 Media Processor, which combines an 800MHz Pentium M core with a proprietary video processing core all on one chip. That’s about as much power as a 1.2GHz Atom, and it’s enabled some pretty cool demos, like this box that’s running a custom Flash Lite UI on top of Linux. The video silicon accelerates H.264 playback, so newer YouTube content looked fantastic — some of the best big-screen YouTube we’ve ever seen actually. That’s all the software was optimized for, however — older content that required software decoding looked much worse, and playback wasn’t stellar. That’s down to optimization, though, and we’re willing to forgive it, especially since the demo was put together in two weeks or so. Of course, the big question when you’re looking at an IA core running Flash is whether or not this rig can do Hulu on a big screen, and the answer was cautious but optimistic: it’s technically possible and even somewhat easy, but as usual it all comes down to Hulu allowing it. (What else did you expect?) Still, it’s interesting to see a set-top box with some actual processing power, and Intel’s got some more interesting demos for us coming up, including a three-tuner Tru2Way HTPC that can send video to a PS3. Intel Plans Even Tinier Circuits in 2011

SAN FRANCISCO — Moore’s Law coming to an end? Not if you ask Intel, which announced Tuesday that it plans to offer chips based on a 22 nanometer process technology in the second half of 2011.

The 22nm chip packs in more than 2.9 billion transistors into an area the size of a fingernail. That’s double the density of the 32nm chips that are currently the cutting edge; most of Intel’s CPUs today are still based on a 45nm process.

Generally, the smaller the circuits in a computer chip, the more complex features the chipmaker can integrate into that chip. Small circuits also have the potential to increase the computing speed, but the tradeoff is increased power consumption, heat production, and — with very small circuits — increasingly large challenges in keeping the circuits electrically isolated from one another.

At the company’s developer conference here Tuesday, Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini (above) showed a silicon wafer containing the first working chips built on the technology. The 22nm test circuits include both SRAM memory as well as logic circuits that will be used in future Intel microprocessors.

intel_22nm_sram_testchip“We are moving ahead with development of our 22nm manufacturing technology and have built working chips that will pave the way for production of still more powerful and more capable processors,” said Otellini.

Moore’s Law, first introduced by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore in 1965,  postulates that the number of transistors on a cost-effective integrated circuit will double every two years. One way to describe how well transistors are packed is the smallest geometric feature that can be produced on a chip, usually designated in nanometers (billionths of a meter).

In late 2007, Intel started mass production of chips based on the 45nm technology. The company has said it plans to introduce 32nm processors early next year.  By comparison, the Intel 4004 microprocessor introduced in 1971 was based on 10,000nm process. A human hair is approximately 100,000 nanometers.

The 22nm wafer is made up of individual die containing 364 million bits of SRAM memory. SRAMs are used as test vehicles to demonstrate technology performance, yield and chip reliability. Once the technology works on SRAMs, Intel will move to utilize it in CPU production.

At 0.092 square microns, the 22nm process based chips contain the smallest SRAM cell used in working circuits ever reported, said Intel.

Motorola CLIQ promotional material surfaces, confirms October 19th pre-order start

Can you feel it? Can you feel Motorola rushing back to relevance? If you’re still in need of a bit more encouragement, have a gander at this. What you’re looking at is official T-Mobile USA promotional material for the upcoming CLIQ, and interestingly enough, the whole brochure is in the shape of the phone it’s advertising. You won’t learn much from flipping through the pages (though the screengrabs are appreciated), but you will notice that pre-orders are set officially begin on October 19th — just like we knew they would. You know, when it shows up as free on contract.
