Video: Creative Zii EGG gets firmware updated to 92.02, still looks pretty janky

Creative’s just rolled out a firmware update — version 92.02, if you’re counting — for developers of the Zii EGG. The updates include adding support for media playback on the SD card, a 3D close line effect for when you’re browsing in landscape view, plus a stretching effect for browsing lists. The sample shots taken with its camera look pretty decent, and in the video which is after the break, you can catch a look at both the close line and stretching effect — the latter of which we think has some potential to be useful, even if it’s all still looking a bit rough around the edges for now. Like we said, the video is after the break — hit the read link for test shots.

Nokia 5130 XpressMusic Announced for T-Mobile

Nokia5130 copy.jpgIf you’ve been waiting to buy a cheap music phone with some decent features, today might be the day to act on that urge. T-Mobile on Wednesday made available the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, which was only previously offered in Europe. It can be purchased for $29.99 with a 2-year contract.

Based on the price, you can probably guess this isn’t packed any stupendous features. However, for a inexpensive music phone, you could do worse than the 5130’s 2-megapixel camera, FM radio, 2-inch QVGA display, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Stereo Bluetooth. The phone is immediately available for purchase in both Black and Red or White and Aqua.

Hackers Hone in on Jailbreak Solutions for iPhone OS 3.1

_g7i9185

Last week Wired.com provided an overview on iPhone OS 3.1, the latest upgrade for the iPhone operating system. As is always the case with iPhone software updates, this one removed unauthorized apps for jailbroken (i.e., hacked devices). We also forewarned iPhone 3GS owners of a major loss: After upgrading to 3.1, they cannot downgrade to an earlier version of the OS to jailbreak again and regain access to their unauthorized apps. Fortunately that problem has already been fixed.

Jay Freeman, creator of the unauthorized Cydia app store for jailbroken iPhones, has posted instructions on how iPhone 3GS owners can downgrade from iPhone OS 3.1 to 3.0. The process is actually pretty sneaky.

For the new iPhone 3GS, Freeman explains, Apple now verifies the authenticity of the software whenever you attempt to restore the device to factory settings (i.e., format the iPhone and reinstall the OS). Apple stopped signing 3.0, so iPhone 3GS owners could not downgrade from 3.1. Now Freeman has launched a method to trick iTunes into signing from his own servers. The instructions for downgrading are listed on his personal site. Even if you didn’t upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1, Freeman recommends you follow these steps anyway to “future proof” your iPhone 3GS through future updates.

Meanwhile, owners of the first- and second-generation iPhones are in luck: Dev-Team, the famous group of iPhone hackers, has released a tool to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1 for their devices. So they need not worry about losing access to their precious unauthorized apps. It’s unclear when iPhone 3GS owners will get a jailbreak solution, but it appears the Dev-Team is hard at work.

Comcast could serve TV over WiMAX, inflate your bill even higher

Think you’re good at turning down the upsell? Try saying no to adding WiMAX to your home internet service for the low, low price of whatever Comcast wants to charge. Thanks to a multi-billion dollar tie-up with Clearwire, Comcast has been offering WiMAX-based internet services in a few markets, but now that On Demand Online is a go, it makes sense to think that the operator would use that as leverage to get people hooked. For those unaware, ODO enables Comcast pay-TV subscribers to watch a vast array of programming from any internet connection, which of course means that any ole 3G / 4G data connection would work just as well as Comcast’s own. Oh, and while mobile TV is pretty good — and we’re going to let Comcast finish — watching HDTV at home with a DVR is definitely the best scenario of all time.

Navigon GPS iPhone app to get live traffic

One of my biggest complaints about flat-fee GPS apps for the iPhone is the lack of real-time traffic updates. That’s about to change.

Navigon AG, the developer of the Navigon MobileNavigator app, announced Wednesday that live traffic capability, called Traffic Live, for its GPS phone application is coming soon. …

Soap on a rope? Nope, it’s a mouse

Japanese perhipherals maker Elecom has a new mouse out that’s sure to appeal to germaphobes.

The M-SP1UR Soap optical mouse is a basic three-button USB pointing device that’s meant to resemble a rounded bar of soap. Heck, it even says “SOAP” on it.

Just don’t …

Tune in: Six MP3 players with great FM radios

FM to the Internet: I ain't dead yet. The average person listens to 17 hours of terrestrial radio every week, and that’s according to a Pandora executive.

Sure, you’ve loaded a fabulous collection of digital audio tracks onto your MP3 player, but what do you do …

250GB PlayStation 3 slim Uncharted 2 bundle leaked?

Well, what do we have here? No sooner do we get a 250GB Xbox 360 on the horizon does this image land in our tip box, showing a PlayStation 3 slim bundle for Uncharted 2 that just so happens to have that 250GB hard drive we spotted in the FCC last month. We’ve been able to independently confirm that it’s legit, but beyond that we’ve got no clue when it’ll be announced or any price / release date information. We wouldn’t be surprised to see this hit stores in mid-October alongside Uncharted 2, but that’s just a guess on our part. With any luck, SCE exec Kaz Hirai will be shedding some light at his Tokyo Game Show keynote next week — c’mon Sony, don’t keep us in the dark too long.

Update: Joystiq points us to this rumor from last week that Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed II, and Gran Turismo 5 bundles are possibly slated for the UK in October for £299 ($494), just £50 more than the current 120GB model.

Update 2: We just got off the line with SCEA, who has denied the photo and told us quite plainly that there’s no bundles being planned for America, but that the rep can’t speak for other regions (e.g. Europe, Japan) — not surprising, of course, you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, right?

Wacom Bamboo multitouch tablet is real, we’ve got pics to prove it

Windows 7 is almost here, and we get the feeling that the multitouch revolution (at least in the consumer realm) won’t be too far behind. Lenovo just dished out a pair of new touch-friendly laptops, Fujitsu spruced up its LifeBook T5010 with a multitouch panel and now Wacom is kicking out a finger-friendly Bamboo tablet. Just in case you figured that yesterday’s sneak peek was nothing more than an imaginative Photoshop, we’ve got another round of closeups today to prove otherwise. Tipster Jesus claims that he’s been using the $69 device on his Snow Leopard-equipped Mac for a tick, and he’s had no issues getting things working. There’s also mention of a full interactive tutorial that helps you setup customer application-specific gestures, which frankly, sounds like oodles of fun.

[Thanks, Jesus]

Does the iHome iP1 sounds as good as it looks?

(Credit: iHome)

We don’t associate the iHome brand with “premium” audio and cutting-edge design, but the folks there are giving it their best shot with the 100-watt iP1, which has a new look for the company known for its budget iPod audio systems.

The first thing you notice about …
