AUO aims for $100 e-book readers by 2011

E-book readers have certainly been getting better and cheaper lately, but it looks like display-maker AUO thinks there’s still plenty of room for improvement, and it’s now promising to cut the price of ’em fully in half within two years. The key to that, obviously, is to make the displays cheaper, which AUO says it can do by not only improving the technology, but by taking advantage of the sheer scale of its production capabilities. That, it says, could allow for a $150 e-book reader by next year, and a $100 reader by 2011. What’s more, AUO also says that it expects both Amazon and Sony to get “some” of their displays from AUO (with the rest coming from industry leader Prime View) which, if you put two and two together, could pave the way for some cheaper Kindles and Sony Readers in the not too distant future.

Joby Gives the iPhone Legs

JobyGorillamobile3G.jpg

In the Joby world, there’s nothing that can’t be improved with the addition of flexible, gripping legs. August saw the release of the Gorillatorch, a light you can put in any position, and now we’ve got the Gorillamobile for 3G and 3GS iPhones.

The Gorillamobile for 3G/3GS includes a soft-touch case that you leave on your iPhone and bendy tripod legs that you can quickly attach or release. Use them as a tripod for a video shoot, or wrap them around the handlebars of an exercise bike at your gym for easy video-viewing.

This version works with more than just the iPhone, however, since it comes with two adhesive clips and a universal camera adapter, so you can add legs to all your mobile devices. Buy it from the Joby site for $39.95.

World’s first mod chip for PS3?

PS3(Credit: Sony)

Sony has been quite successful in deterring game piracy for its PS3 console so far. However, this may be about to change if a rumored Belzar mod chip turns out to be real. Besides supporting PS2 and PS3 bootleg games, the hardware-based hack promises many other functions ranging …

Digital Blues LEGO Camera, MP3 Player, More

Digital_Blue_camera.jpg

Over the past several years, the LEGO brand has grown into something approaching a cult, with fans creating some amazing projects (LEGOs in space, the Woniak/Jobs playset) and other companies incorporating the design-friendly bricks into sometimes surprising  products (iPod speaker docks). PCMag even once commissioned a LEGO artist to build a PC.

Now CE-for-kids maker Digital Blue is coming out with some of the most appealing LEGO-inspired products I’ve seen, including a camera, videocam, MP3 player, and more. Yep, they’re for kids–but I can think of more than a few grownup who’ll crave one or another of these cool products. And yes–they’re stackable!

The LEGO Digital Camera, above, sells for $49.99 list. It has 3 megapixels and a 1.5-inch LCD on the back; 128MB of built-in memory holds around 80  photos.

More LEGOtastic photos after the jump.

Sigma’s DP1s gets official, hitting shelves in November?

Sigma’s DP1 had a lot going for it — despite a somewhat steep asking price, plenty of folks were won over by both its sturdy build and image quality. Now, after the world offered up a somewhat muted response to the DP2, the company’s announcing an update of the former device. The DP1s features the same sensor and processor as the DP1 but adds some functionality, including the ability to simultaneously shoot separate RAW and JPEG images, and an option to allocate the QS (Quick Set) function to the digital zoom buttons. Also in this build is a 14 megapixel (2,652 x 1,768 x 3 layers) FOVEON X3 direct image sensor, which the company says will improved performance when shooting backlit subjects, a 16.6mm F4 lens, and more. No price or street date yet, but the rumor mill says to look for it sometime in November. PR after the break.

New Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse arrive at the FCC

Well, well, what’s this? A new Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse have arrived at the FCC, and they’ve got new model numbers of A1314 and A1296 — the current wireless keyboard is A1255 and the Mighty Mouse is A1197. That’s pretty much all we know for now, but these keyboard dimensions are also smaller than the current model, which rules out a return of the numeric keypad — sorry to dash your hopes, Excel jockeys. Is this the new keyboard rumored to accompany an iMac refresh? We’ll have to wait to find out — but on a similar note, AppleInsider says Steve Jobs himself is leading the development of this new mouse, featuring some kind of multitouch and potentially housed in an aluminum shell. That would certainly explain those multitouch mouse patents we’ve seen in the past, as well as bring the desktop mousing experience in line with the multitouch action found on the MacBooks — AI says the new mice somehow enable iPhone-style kinetic scrolling, which would definitely be interesting. So… you want to maybe schedule an event to launch all this stuff, Steve?

Update: And… Apple’s managed to yank the images out of the FCC filings, which is about as fast as we’ve ever seen that happen.

Update 2: Revised images have been posted, carefully cropped to show only the relevant FCC labeling — although model numbers remain. This is absolutely the fastest we’ve ever seen the FCC database change, it’s rather impressive.

Update 3: AppleInsider’s revised their post to say an aluminum mouse is just speculation, so this thing could be plastic after all.
