Mattel’s Dora Links Doll ($59.99 list for ages 5 to 10), a new fashion doll that portrays a tween-age Dora the Explorer, could be a great toy. But you must connect it to a PC to make it work, so make sure you have some computer troubleshooting skills. You’ll need them.

While my daughter and I were able to get the doll to do all the things in the commercial— change her eye color, hair length, and “makeup” and jewelry colors—it took a long time to update my PC laptop to work with the doll. The installation took over an hour over a broadband connection! And Dora Links wouldn’t work with my Mac. These are not the kind of things you’d like to find out on Christmas morning, or on one of the nights of Chanukah or Kwanzaa.

Google Maps Navigation officially comes to Android 1.6

You might’ve thought that Google was positioning its industry-changing Google Maps Navigation as a value proposition for Android 2.0 and beyond, but yeah, not so much — instead, they’ve gone ahead and backported it to 1.6 (alias “Donut”) which means that T-Mobile’s myTouch 3G and G1 plus other 1.6-equipped devices across the land can get in on the action. In the case of the memory-starved G1, that’s especially surprising, and a heartening sign that the world’s first retail Android device still has some fight left in it. It’s available from the Android Market now, so go ahead — try to get yourself lost. We dare you.

AT&T’s new DataConnect Pass plans serve up data a la carte

AT&T is following Verizon’s lead today with the introduction of new prepaid broadband plans targeted directly at netbook and laptop users who find themselves out of WiFi range (and in desperate need of email) every once in a while. The so-called DataConnect Pass plans exactly mirror Verizon’s pricing, which means you can get 75MB as a “day pass” for $15, 250MB as a weekly deal for $30, or a half gig per month for $50. Like Verizon, you’re far better off getting the 5GB postpaid plan if you’re a heavy user here — but if you find yourself needing wireless once in a blue moon, this may very well be the way to go. The Definition of Evil: Microsoft’s Search Wars Hurt Us All

Microsoft may pay Murdoch to delist from Google. If it happens, it sets a bad precedent. Imagine if all the world’s content is exclusive to some engines and we have to search them all to find what we want? Hell!

This started when Microsoft and Google paid for access to Twitter’s millions of tweets and Bing paid Facebook and Twitter for access to their pages. Think about this perspective, if you ran Fox the WSJ and other major content makers, wouldn’t you think that your content is worth more than all those 140 character posts? Right, you would. And if those sites are charging 100s of millions and up, for their content, wouldn’t you ask for a lot more? You probably would, and if you’re Murdoch, the most powerful man in media, you’d probably get what you want. Pulling out of Google would be just another part of Murdoch setting up his paywall. But it’s going to set a nasty precedent for the rest of the short tail of mega media companies to get a lot of Google’s cash. Maybe a lot of these companies value Google’s help in promoting their stuff, but it never hurts to ask for money, especially when media and publishing are super duper hard up on cash these days, in general. I’m not an investor in big media or any tech companies, so its not a problem to me, in that way. But it is a problem to me as a guy who lives and works through search engines.

Microsoft is just being evil again. Now, this isn’t typical Microsoft bashing — someone has to fight Google. And in a way, you have to hand it to Microsoft. They’re the underdog here fighting a Google that grows in power every day, and their Facebook content deal won’t likely be matched by Google any time soon. But this is so typically Bad Microsoft, because they’ve cleverly short cut the straightforward fight for marketshare by features and gone for a deal-based solution to the problem. Like the PC and OS fight in the 80s they’re competing with business tactics instead of quality. (And Bing is great, so I’m not making a complete 1:1 comparison to Windows.) We’re sort of left with—instead of a David and Goliath—a Clash of the Titans situation with pieces of rock and lighting falling from the sky and crushing us. Microsoft fails to see/care that the fragmentation that Microsoft is trying to achieve is not only going to hurt Google — it is going to hurt YOU AND ME.

This is the Microsoft we know from the last century, before great underdog products like Xbox and Zune. This is from a company who’s CEO recently told us that sales are more important than critical acclaim, preferring profit over better product. And this is a company that gets in its anticompetitive digs when it can: For example, in Internet Explorer, it’s really hard to set Google as your default browser, not being listed in the alternative choices to Bing. Yet, in Google Chrome, it’s easy to set Bing as the default search.

Again, imagine that half of the top 500 media companies are delisted from Google. And imagine that Google stoops to this strategy and buys out the other half of that 500. Now imagine you have to search for something and now have to type it in twice because who the fuck is going to remember (no one) which search engine covers which content? *

People, I’m telling you, this is bad news. People talk about net neutrality like it’s only about the data’s prioritization over the pipes. But what good is equivalence in data speed and prioritization if you can’t find it in the first place?

*the fix for all this is that we’ll use search engine aggregators, which is just another layer of bullshit to sort through.

The 404 Podcast 473: Where Papa’s got a brand new plaid

Jeff is taking the week off to get a head start on Thanksgiving, so Wilson and I invite Mark to help us out on today’s episode of The 404 Podcast. After spending a couple days out of the office last week, it feels great to get back in front of the mic. It’s no fun being home with the flu, but it did give me an opportunity to check out Twilight. No, not The Twilight Saga: New Moon, I meant the first one, which I never bothered to watch in theaters. I’m glad I didn’t spend $12 to watch it, too! Get all the details plus a sneak peek at the new movie in theaters now. Wilson also checked out Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey’s new movie, “Precious.” The movie also features Mariah Carey and Mo’Nique, who’s up for an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Precious’ abusive mother.

The first story of the day is about the much-publicized-but-never-materialized Hulu iPhone App. The self-proclaimed “bada**” portable player was first announced in April ’09, successfully drumming up hype for a product that never actually came out. Wilson and Mark speculate that it could be because Hulu is preparing to launch a paid version of the streaming video site, which could potentially be holding up development of the iPhone version, which leads us to pose the question: How much would YOU be willing to pay for a monthly Hulu subscription on your iPhone? Do you frequently watch video on your smartphone, and if so, how much does it eat up your battery life? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Mark and Wilson know a thing or two about Black Friday after heading out to Best Buy every year to video tape the anxious shoppers waiting in line, but this year is a different story. While those two are fast asleep in their beds, others will be pushing, fighting, and kicking to get the best deals at their local big box retailers. But as Chris Matyszczyk tells us, some of the deals might not be awesome as they seem. Watch out for deceptively low product quantities that give zero hope for anyone NOT third in line, as well as “derivatives,” aka products that are advertised as brand name but are actually “inferior models.” If you’re planning on waiting in line, be sure to listen to this segment for helpful tips on how and where to shop for the best deals this Black Friday.

Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)

Now look, we’re not saying we know for sure that Apple thinks Verizon’s latest round of merciless attack ads on its device and US carrier are worth responding to, but these latest iPhone spots would certainly suggest it. A new campaign launching tonight focuses on the iPhone’s ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T’s network, and each of the two new TV spots ends with the line “Can your phone and your network do that?” From where we’re sitting, it looks like between this new round and AT&T’s Luke Wilson-manned comparison spots, both the phonemaker and carrier are fully stepping into the ring. Apple VP Defends iPhone’s App Store Approval Policy


Though indisputably successful, the iPhone’s App Store has been at the center of controversy for Apple this past year. In a rare move, the company’s vice president of marketing Phil Schiller spoke on the record to defend the App Store’s review policies.

Apple has approved over 100,000 iPhone apps to date, but some questionable rejections have brought the company under fire. Among concerned developers, Joe Hewitt, developer of the popular Facebook iPhone app, spoke loud and clear that he would no longer develop for the iPhone because he disapproved of Apple’s review process.

“I am philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process,” Hewitt told TechCrunch. “I am very concerned that they are setting a horrible precedent for other software platforms, and soon gatekeepers will start infesting the lives of every software developer.”

In an interview with BusinessWeek, Schiller (right) explains why Apple has an App Store review process. In short, he said it’s necessary to ensure iPhone customers get what they’re promised. He noted that 10 percent of app rejections are related to “inappropriate” content, while 90 percent have to do with technical fixes, such as bugs. His third main point is that the App Store has an international audience, and thus several governments and political leaders are asking the company what it’s doing to ensure children are not downloading inappropriate content.

“We’ve built a store for the most part that people can trust,” he said. “You and your family and friends can download applications from the store, and for the most part they do what you’d expect, and they get onto your phone, and you get billed appropriately, and it all just works.”

Sony’s Kaz Hirai confirms ‘premium level’ subscription coming to PSN

Well, Sony may have once downplayed the notion of “catching up” with Xbox Live, but it looks like it is now set to take at least one big cue from its rival. As oh-so-quietly revealed during a presentation on Thursday and now confirmed by Kaz Hirai himself, Sony will be adding a “premium level” subscription service to the PlayStation Network sometime next year. According to Hirai, that subscription will get you “premium content and services,” although exactly what those are remains a bit unclear, as the current level of service will apparently remain free, and continue to include features like Facebook, Netflix, and the ability to play games online. Also up in the air is any word on a price or launch date, although the timing of the announcement does seem to suggest that we might just be hearing more about this at CES.
