IBM PowerXCell-8i processor said to be last of its kind, but Cell will live on

IBM’s Cell processor may have helped break a few records and find its way into everything from video game consoles to TVs at the same time, but it looks like things could be about to change in a fairly big way for Big Blue’s groundbreaking chip. According to Heise Online, IBM Vice President of Deep Computing David Turek has confirmed that the company’s current PowerXCell-8i processor will be the last of its kind, and that there will not be a successor with dual PowerPC processors and 32 SPEs as originally planned. Slightly less clear, however, is the future of the Cell program in general, which will apparently live on in “another form” — to which Turek reportedly added, somewhat vaguely, “the future is hybrid,” although we’re fairly certain he’s not talking about cars.

Oops! Microsoft Ran Out Of Vista Product Keys

This article was written on September 07, 2006 by CyberNet.

Vista Logo We all knew this day would come, didn’t we? Maybe it’s not as serious as you may think but it is funny nonetheless. Microsoft’s Connect users have been able to request new product keys for each release that they have downloaded. However, it looks like Microsoft hit a little bump today when members tried to get new keys:

We are currently out of additional keys for package “5342 and Up Ultimate”. We will have more keys available for download within 72 hours. Please do NOT send mail to MCHelp or LHBeta regarding this issue.”

I don’t see what the big deal is because they should just be able to use their old keys like the rest of us? The Beta 2 key that you received can also be activated on up to 10 computers so it isn’t like they need more keys…unless you are a business that likes to run a pre-released operating system.

I’m sure this issue is part of the reason that Microsoft won’t let the public get new keys for Vista RC1. From what I have seen in the past there are plenty of hackers that could probably help Microsoft get some more keys. :)

Neptune's Trident case mod honors the god of liquid cooling

What do you do if your Battlestar Galactica case mod has conquered Earth and space with its awesomeness? Why, you conquer the seas, of course. Brian Carter is back with this Neptune’s Trident mod, a lovely blue thing with three separate cooling loops, one for each of the three EVGA GeForce GTX260 video cards inside. The result? A powerhouse for sure and something that we think would look quite appropriate in Tron Legacy. You reading this, Mr. Bridges?

Cheap Plastic Box Detects Cameras and ‘Spy Wi-Fi’

chinavasion-cvmv-j19-1

The “Spy Wi-Fi Signal and Camera Lens Detector” is a cheap version of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s yacht, which can detect and shield against the paparazzi’s peeping lenses. A very cheap version, in fact, coming in at just $40 instead of a rather more expensive $1.2 billion.

In fact, the more we read, the better a bargain this seems. Unlike the Abramovich’s boat, the toy from Chinavasion also detects Wi-Fi signals. And not just any Wi-Fi signals, but spy Wi-Fi, which the description defines as anything between 1 – 6500MHz. This should ensure that the alarm will sound continually, detecting all kinds of wireless background chatter as it bounces around the airwaves.

And the camera lens detector? How does that work? It must take some pretty sophisticated tech to distinguish between a camera lens and any other glass, right? It turns out that this merely detects infra-red lasers, which means any camera lens not so equipped will remain invisible. That should count for pretty much all hidden spy cameras.

The “Everything Signal and IR Laser Detector” (as it should really be named) is available now. Buy five or more and you get a couple of bucks off. A bargain.

Sony VAIO UX handheld gets 3G wireless, quad OS, inflated sense of self

As we’re all undoubtedly aware, old gadgets don’t really die — they just get modded eternally (as the continued appearance of Atari on these pages will attest). Another case-in-point: the Sony VAIO UX490N. It’s been a while since we laid eyes on one of these bad boys, but apparently there’s been plenty of hacking goin’ on ever since, including: upgrading the SSD to the RunCore Pro IV 128GB and swapping out the 1.2GHz CPU for a 1.33GHz Core 2 Duo (overclocked to 1.438GHz). And that’s just the beginning — the cats over at the Micro PC Talk forums have also installed a voice-capable HSPA modem, swapped out the old wireless card for one that supports a/b/g/n WiFi, and installed partitions for Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Business, Windows 7 Ultimate and Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7. Impressive stuff, all that: but what if we told you that one fearless individual has applied every one of those changes to a single device? And that battery life was pretty much unaffected? Well, you’re probably going to want the details, right? Hit the source link to get started.

Jinbo’s MID does Windows XP on the tiny, shuns you and your physical keyboard

Jimbo's MID does Windows XP on the tiny, shuns you and your physical keyboard

The netbook/smartbook/MID crossover continues, occasionally spawning some curious genetic misfits seemingly ill-suited for the world at large. Such is the Jinbo MID, a rather chunky and plain mobile internet device that follows in the footsteps of BenQ’s S6 by packing Windows XP without a keyboard. It does at least offer slightly higher specs: a 1.1GHz Atom Z510 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and 16GB of storage. Data comes in via 802.11b/g and 3G wireless then goes out through that 5-inch screen of unknown resolution. It looks to be nearly an inch thick so it’s surprising the company couldn’t wedge a keyboard in there, as Viliv found room for one in their similar S5, but hopefully enough customizations and layers over XP will make everything work. And if it doesn’t, well, the thing likely won’t be available outside of China and, at 3950 yuan (about $580), it’s debatable whether you’d want one if it were.

New Worm Attacks iPhones, Targets Mobile Banking

2659619029_d09a3bb557_b

A second iPhone worm is in the wild, and unlike the jokey Australian worm authored by hacker prankster Ikee two weeks ago, this one is dangerous.

Unlike Ikee’s hack, which merely rick-rolled owners of infected iPhones, the new Dutch variant targets customers of the bank ING. When triggered, the worm redirects users visiting the banking site to an address in Lithuania which shows a fake login screen for ING online banking. It is essentially a phishing attack run on compromised iPhones.

The panic that will inevitably spread from this story is unjustified. First, if you are a regular iPhone customer you are safe, even if you are in the Netherlands. This is because, like the Ikee hack before it, the new worm will only work on a jailbroken, or hacked iPhone. Further, you will have to explicitly install SSH remote access, and then you will have to leave the root password at its default, which is alpine.

If that means nothing to you, you don’t have any reason to worry. If that does mean something to you, shame on you! You should go change that password right now.

And don’t forget, you’ll also need to live in Holland and to be a customer of the ING bank for this to work. This could explain why this “security breach”, according to the BBC, has only affected a few people: “The number of infected phones was thought to be in the hundreds rather than thousands.” And how does it spread itself? “The worm could jump from phone to phone among owners using the same wi-fi hotspot.”

While we shouldn’t ignore the threat of malware to our increasingly powerful and connected mobile devices, neither should we panic. The news of a genuine iPhone-killing piece of software seems to be treated with the same glee as news of a virus for the Mac. Thankfully, none yet exist.

Camangi’s WebStation tablet ships soon, sports Android, loves early birds (video)

Camangi's WebStation tablet ships soon, sports Android, loves early birds (video)

The CrunchPad may or may not have stumbled, but competitors seem to be swooping in for the kill regardless. The latest is Camangi with its WebStation, a 7-inch, Android 1.5-powered tablet said to be shipping in just a few weeks. Detailed specs have still not been made official, but the glass touchscreen is 800 x 480, WiFi 802.11b/g, and there’s GPS on tap if you want to take this out into the real world. We found two demonstration videos, both embedded after the break for your viewing pleasure, the first a simple walkthrough while the second shows it struggling to render the Avatar trailer — something James Cameron is surely hoping won’t be a problem on the final device. Retail price is said to be $399 but the site indicates the first 100 purchasers will get “early bird pricing,” whatever that amounts to. Might as well sign up and see. What’s another bit of spam these days?

[Thanks, Peter]
