Layar 3.0 reunites the Beatles in 3D augmented reality

Layar’s approach to bringing augmented reality to the masses is unique. Instead of writing isolated AR apps, Layar provides a very real augmented reality platform onto which content owners can layer (or layar) their data resulting in a richer experience when viewing the world through your Android or iPhone 3GS camera lens. There are already 294 layers and counting ranging from Google’s ubiquitous local search results to homegrown content listing apartments for rent or tourist hot spots. Today sees the launch of Layar 3.0 with new 3D capabilities, authentication, and plenty more to entice anyone “with basic web development skills” to join the fun. To show the platform’s new capabilities Layar presents a handful of use cases that include the ability to add authenticated social media layars (like Twitter and Foursquare), see incomplete construction sites in their final form, interactive public-space art projects, and a guided Beatles discovery tour that takes you to destinations made famous by the fab foursome — you can even pose with the band for pictures as they cross Abbey Road. Sure, the jury’s still out on the usefulness of 3D content presented in this manner and the ability to geolocate Twitter users and Hollywood stars in this manner continues to creep us out. But man is this stuff interesting.

Intel brings out Atom SDK wanting more apps, acts oblivious to Windows

Intel wants people to develop apps for the x86 instruction set. Think about that a little, let it sink in. Now that you’re appropriately unimpressed, let’s discuss this new developer kit that’s just been brought out. Designed to assist coders in that overwhelmingly challenging and new environment known as Atom-powered netbooks, the SDK has now hit Beta and is being distributed to developers of apps for Windows and Moblin. Yes Moblin, the light and snappy Linux flavor intended to spur on the sinking ship known as the MID category, still hasn’t been abandoned by Intel, even if its original goal now seems out of reach. Intriguingly, apps approved by Intel will “sell at stores opening next year,” which perhaps hints at grander plans than the mere optimization of software to undernourished hardware.

CompuLab’s fit-PC2i is extra tiny, ready for Windows 7

CompuLab has been holding it down on the diminutive front for years now, though the outfit’s latest mini PC packs even more features than ever before. Measuring just 4- x 4.5- x 1.05-inches and weighing only 13 ounces, the fit-PC2i is hailed as the planet’s smallest dual gigabit Ethernet-equipped PC. Other specs include an Intel Atom Z5xx CPU (from 1.1GHz to 2GHz), up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, room for a 2.5-inch HDD, audio in / out, built-in WiFi, four USB 2.0 ports and Windows 7 (if you so choose). The rig is built from a 100 percent aluminum die-cast body, and even at full load it sucks down just 8 watts. Got the perfect DIY project for this bad boy? Good, now wait ’til January for it to ship.

We’ll freely admit to having a love / hate relationship with Christmas lights and decorations. The sheer gaudiness of it all often turns our “bah humbug” nature inside out, revealing the awe struck “inner child” we hear so much about from people like Martha Stewart and Oprah. Regardless, an artful DIYer’s taken the outdoor Christmas lighting game to the next level. Making use of an ioBridge IO-204 module, an Arduino Wave Kit, an Arduino Duemilanove board, solid state relays, and the Oracle Application Express for connectivity, he was able to get his internet controlled light and music show on the road. Check out the final results — which feature 3,300 mini lights, 3 spotlights, an LED Rope, 4 LEDs, and one magical reindeer — in the video after the break. HT560 5.6-inch UMPC spotted in Shenzhen running Windows XP

Sure, an Android MID featuring some sort of contrived “net gen” functionality might promise inspirational moments, but will it get the job done? A company called Shenzhen Seed Industrial, located in the Chegongmiao Futian Distict (we hear it’s lovely in the spring) is offering retailers and e-tailers a Windows XP-powered workhorse in the form of the HT560 5.6-inch UMPC/MID. Built on the VIA C7 (1GHz) processor, this guy sports 1GB RAM, 16GB SDD, two USB 2.0 ports, and both front and rear-facing 1.3 megapixel webcams. For connectivity, you get the usual assortment of WiFi and Bluetooth, with a GPS thrown in for good measure. If you’re looking to pick up a handful of these things, hit up the Tradekey link where it’s available in lots of ten. Otherwise, Wirelession appears to have rebranded this the W1030 and have priced it at $421. Want a closer look? You can get one after the break.

Nokia N900 impressively demos WebGL 3D graphics

We’re not sure anyone out there needs any more proof that the Nokia N900 is powerhouse, but just in case you still had doubts, check this video of a WebGL-enabled Firefox build smoothly rendering some complex 3D models on Espoo’s “internet tablet with phone capabilities.” It’s pretty impressive stuff, especially considering WebGL is still being standardized and it hasn’t gotten beyond Firefox nightlies on the desktop yet. Micron RealSSD C300 becomes first SSD to leverage SATA 6Gbps interface

Seagate may have claimed the rights to the planet’s first SATA 6Gbps hard drive, but it’s Micron claiming the same feat in the SSD realm. The outfit’s new RealSSD C300 is the first of its kind to natively comply with the wicked fast new specification, which will (at least in theory) provide read speeds of up to 355MB/sec and write speeds of up to 215MB/sec. It’s also the first solid state drive to use ONFI 2.1 high-speed synchronous NAND, and while we’re obviously eager to see what real-world benchmarks show, the demonstration vids after the break already have our mouths watering. As for availability? Tthe drive is currently sampling in 1.8- and 2.5-inch sizes, though consumers shouldn’t expect to pick one up (in 128GB or 256GB sizes) until Q1 of next year. Best start saving, bud.

Peregrine wired gaming glove gets pre-order status

Back at E3 in June, we had a chance to check out the singular Peregrine glove — a wired elastic affair which allows you to configure 40 different combinations for gaming. When got tried one on, we found that fast-paced games might not be the Peregrine’s forte, but something like World of Warcraft could be a perfect pairing. The Peregrine, which runs $129, is available for pre-order now, which means that just about any day now we should start seeing these puppies in the wild. We can only hope!
