Lenovo set for January launch of Pine Trail-packing S10-3 netbook and S10-3t multitouch tablet

Lenovo set for January launch of Pine Trail-packing S10-3 netbook and multitouch tablet version

It’s been awhile since Lenovo last updated its IdeaPad line, the S10-2 dropping over the summer, but we’re hearing that the third iteration of the platform is set to be unveiled in the very near future. The model we spied at the FCC last month is confirmed to be the S10-3, possessing Atom N450 (Pine Trail) internals, a 10.1-inch screen, WiFi, 3G, and integrated GPS. More interesting is that there is an S10-3t model coming as well, a convertible tablet version which you can see the underside of above, thanks again to the FCC. It will feature a multitouch screen to make the most of its Windows 7 install, and hopefully won’t be crippled by Starter Edition like another tablet we know.

Motorola Cliq gets rooted by the Dude

Motorola Cliq gets rooted by the Dude

Sick of Motorola meting out Android firmware updates when it chooses? Trust in The Dude — TheDudesAndroid, to be specific, a user over at ModMyMoto who has posted The Dudes Root for Cliq (following up an earlier and similarly unkempt version for the G1). The install process looks about as complicated as you might expect, so make sure you keep Walter away while you’re re-flashing lest your handset go all nihilistic on ya. At this point it’s just another 1.5 ROM being installed, but the hope is for a 2.1 port coming in the not too distant future. Unless you’re really pining to get full control over your handset we’d go ahead and wait for that version of the Dude to abide.

Update: The Dude mentioned in comments that credit is also due to fellow Android magicians danation, Skilrax_CZ, and others. We can’t think of any funny movie references for those names so we’ll just leave it at that.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

OLPC XO-3: An impossible $75 fantasy tablet

One Laptop Per Child has spun gold out of straw with its latest design–a semi-flexible plastic, ultrathin, multitouch, backlit tablet that can also function as an e-reader and camera.

Gallery: Evolution of the (Awful) Apple Mouse

4204066148_a18a9950b8_b-2Apple might have been the first to put a mouse and a commercially available computer together in one seamless package, but in its 25-year life, the Mac mouse hasn’t really improved. In fact, with its RSI-inducing, carpal-tunnel-worrying new Magic Mouse, it could be said that the current iteration is the worst yet.

Above you see the two ends of the timespan: the original M0100 mouse from 1984 and, climbing up on top like a drunken husband, this year’s Magic Mouse. The photo, taken by Flickrer Raneko, is part of a group of shots detailing the low and lower points of Apple’s mouse history. Yes, the hated hockey-puck is in there:

The shots are wonderful, so head over to check out the full set. If nothing else, the showcasing of these lovely designs reminds us of the otherwise false claim laid on Apple gear — that it is all about form over function. In the case of mice, this is true, and the irony is that even the most fanatical of Apple gear-heads probably has a Microsoft or Logitech mouse on his desktop.

Motorola Droid now just a (hacked) firmware update away from WiFi tethering

Motorola Droid now just a (hacked) firmware update away from WiFi tethering

Add one more item to the “Droid does” column — unofficially, at least. WiFi tethering from Motorola’s hottest is now possible straight from the phone itself, over WiFi even. PDANet already enabled the thing to share its connection, but relies on an external driver installed on a Windows or Mac device. This latest fix does away with that, but does require the installation of a hacked version of the 2.0.1 firmware. The process, laid out at the read link by DroidForums.net user webacoustics, doesn’t sound that bad, but warnings like “if your phone stays at the white Motorola logo for longer than a minute or two, you probably bricked [it]” will leave many users sticking with PDANet or waiting for the official Verizon solution — and paying out the nose for it.

Toast Printer For Batch-Baking Breakfasts

toastal-printing

This toast ‘printer’ doesn’t actually leave any design on your bread other than the delicious bloom of brown crispness that is the Maillard reaction. Instead, you stack slices like sheets of office paper and the machine feeds them through one by one, dropping tasty toast onto the breakfast table.

The concept, from Othmar Mühlebach, is a new twist on an old design. Anyone unlucky enough to have worked the breakfast shift in a hotel kitchen will recognize the continuous toaster, which would slowly run bread through a hot box on a metal conveyor, plopping crispy slices out the other end.

This old design has several advantages, including the toasting of multiple slices simultaneously (or simultoast, as it should be known) and the low exit, which means minimal toastal damage compared to the death-defying, crumb-scattering drop from Mühlebach’s design.

Still, his looks better, and gains further from not having a stubbled, hungover commis-chef next to it smearing gobs of heat-separated margarine onto the pristine slices: “Cough! Splutter! Sniff.” C’mon, chef. Wash your hands!

Averatec’s HS-105 netbook looks good, should’ve waited for Pine Trail

Details are exceedingly light on Averatec‘s HS-105 netbook, but all you really need to know is in the processor: there’s a 1.6GHz Atom N270 running the show. Unfortunately, that’s the same CPU that has been powering the bulk of netbooks for the past year or so, and with Intel’s Atom N450 already being used in a few choice rigs, there’s hardly a reason to cast a glance at this one. If you insist, other specifications include 2GB of RAM, a 945GSE graphics set, 10.1-inch LCD (1,024 x 600), 160GB / 250GB HDD, WiFi and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. There’s nary a word on price or release, but we fully anticipate the sticker to fall somewhere between “ultra cheap” and “let’s get two.”

Portable Firefox 2.0 Alpha 1 -- Download It Here!

There have been a lot of visitors to my site to download the Tinderbox Build of Firefox 2.0 Alpha 1. The downside to this build is that the uninstaller does not work properly and there are a lot of extension incompatibilities. I have since devised the best solution that i can think of so that people can test this version without messing up any other Firefox installations.

All you have to do is download the Portable Firefox 2.0 Alpha 1 file below. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file PortableFirefox.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Firefox 2.0 Alpha 1! The profile is kept with the PortableFirefox folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!

I have not fully tested it for all compatibilities but I am using it right now and it seems to be working like a champ. I will probably be consistently updating this for each version of Firefox that is released. So check back here when newer versions of Firefox are released!

NOTE: I am hosting these files off of a private account, so please do not hotlink directly to the files.
