Power hungry, are you? ASUS has just the rig for you, as it just launched its newest Republic of Gamers laptop here at a CES press event. The G73hj is doing its darnedest to make every other gaming lappie out there look downright weak, with this one boasting a Core i7-720QM CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 8-channel HD audio, up to 1TB of HDD space and DirectX 11 compatibility thanks to the internal ATI Radeon HD 5870. You’ll also get a spacious 17.3-inch display, a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, Blu-ray / DVD combo drive, 8-cell battery, a 2 megapixel webcam, 802.11b/g WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.1, an 8-in-1 card reader and a mini-VGA connector. Naturally, Windows 7 Home Premium will be running the show, and this thing is far from being slim and sexy. There’s no word yet on a price and release, but we’ll keep you posted.

Update: We nabbed a quick hands-on, check it out!

Intel’s CE 3100 finally gets a shipping partner in Yuixx media player

Intel’s CE 3100 multimedia processor has been hanging out at trade floor shows for months upon months now, but at long last the slab has a partner product that’ll be shipping to general consumers. Conceptronics’ Yuixx HD media player has just reached the point in its life where shipment is imminent, and in speaking with the firm, we learned that’ll hit the streets of Amsterdam at the end of this month. The rest of Europe is expected to see it in February, while Americans will have to wait until it hits the FCC in March before getting any closer. Unlike some other set-top boxes on the market now, this one relies heavily on its own Widget Channel to bring web-based content to televisions, and pumping out 1080p material ain’t no thang for it. Head on past the break for the full release and a promo video, and look for a little hands-on action as the CES show floor opens.

LaCie serves up LaCinema Mini HD, Network Server and Wuala-infused USB keys

CES just wouldn’t be CES without a few new introductions from LaCie, now would it? Nah. Up first from the sexiest name in storage is a fresh member of the LaCinema multimedia hard drive family, the Mini HD. Equipped with 802.11n WiFi and a penchant for serving up 1080p video, this DLNA media player boasts an HDMI output, internal hard drive, USB socket (for uploading media or playing files back from a USB drive) and an extensive list of supported codecs that includes MKV, AVC and DivX. This one should be filtering out now in the US and Europe for an undisclosed amount. Moving on, we’ve got the simply titled Network Server, which sports five drive bays, gigabit Ethernet and Windows Home Server running the show. LaCie also enables users to backup their backups via its own Wuala technology, though exact pricing and availability details won’t be revealed until later in Q1. Lastly, there’s a new trio of USB Keys, which look an awful lot like actual keys. Sadly, these aren’t ready to handle the beast that is SuperSpeed USB, but they do promise transfers as fast as 30MB/sec, and they’re also waterproof and available in sizes as large as 32GB. The company’s also throwing in 4GB of web-accessible Wuala storage for the first two years of ownership, with the CooKey and WhizKey available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities for $19.99 and up, up, up. The full releases are just past the break.

Oregon Scientific unloads at CES: dawn simulating clock, appliance managers and more

Aside from a solar clock and a new weather station, Oregon Scientific has remained relatively silent since last year’s CES extravaganza. For fans of the brand, we’re fairly certain that you’ll be delighted to hear that said company is back in Vegas this year with a fresh spread to ogle. Getting us warmed up is the $129.99 i.wakeup Sunrise Clock, a February-bound bedroom clock that actually simulates dawn. For those clueless even after that description, the device supposed uses “gentle light to help users wake up naturally without the usual disturbing sounds of a blaring alarm.” A half hour before your (un)desired wake up time, the unit gradually brightens until your room is full of glow, after which you can select an FM radio station to come on and “assist you” with rolling on over. The outfit is also introducing two new Appliance Managers: an advanced wireless version ($79.99) to help users keep an eye on how much energy up to eight appliances are using, and a individual version ($29.99) that keeps tabs on just one. There’s plenty more where this came from, so head on past the break for the full skinny.

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid hands-on and impressions

There’s no hiding the fact that the first images of the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid amazed us, and now after seeing the device we can say the feeling was well-founded — the detachable resistive multitouch display worked better than we ever expected for such an early preproduction unit. Check the mouthwatering gallery below and then head over the break for full impressions and a few videos showing off the U1’s finer points.

Rogers signed up to carry Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as a Canadian exclusive

We still don’t know whether T-Mobile is going to take on-contract advantage of the X10’s AWS version in the States, but as far as we can tell, WIND won’t be taking advantage of it in Canada now that Rogers has locked it up as an exclusive. The bad news is that it won’t be launching until some time in the second quarter — but when you think back to the X1 and the excruciating 16-month delay between announcement and retail on Rogers, that ain’t half bad. Now, Rogers, just push HTC to rethink its decision not to move past 1.5 on the Magic and Dream and you’re doing alright by us (at least as far as Android gear goes).

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Technocell Launches Combined USB Charger and Battery

technocelpowerpakxt.jpg
Those of us with smartphones know what it’s like to barely make it through the day with a single charge, desperately turning down brightness and Wi-Fi in the hopes of eking out a few extra minutes of mobile goodness. The Technocell PowerPak XT and PowerPak DUO are the latest clever solutions to smartphones’ power hunger.

This combination charger and battery pack, in the form of a wall-wart power adapter, works with any USB-equipped device. Just plug the adapter into the wall, and it charges itself and your phone at the same time. When you leave for the day, take it with you, and it functions as an external battery. Though this is not the first attempt to address the needs of frequent mobile gadget users (Energizer offers a similar product), its dual-purpose charger and battery design is undeniably convenient.

The product’s manufacturer, Technocel, claims an additional 4.5 hours of talk time from the XT and its 1,600mAh cell and an additional 6 hours from the DUO’s 2,500mAh. Given that the iPhone and Droid’s batteries generally run in the 1,200mAh-to-1,400mAh range, expect around double the battery life you’d usually get from the phone with the XT and triple with the DUO. For those who take more than one USB-powered gadget on the go, the DUO offers two USB ports instead of the XT’s one. Both models will be available January 31st, with the XT’s MSRP at $50 and the DUO’s at $60.

Blue’s new Mikey iPod / iPhone microphone still rocks the retro

Blue Microphones’ original Mikey made the quite the impression when it landed back in late 2008, and while a good bit of time has passed, the new and improved version doesn’t stray from its roots. Debuting here at CES, the second-generation Mikey Portable Recorder for iPod and iPhone touts “improved circuitry for superior recording and enhanced new features,” which happens to include a pair of custom-tuned Blue capsules and an optimization for recording high-volume concerts. There’s also a 3.5mm line-input here for direct recording of other sources, and the USB pass-through connections enables simultaneous charging and syncing. You’ll get a 230-degree range of adjustability with seven detent positions, and it’s bundled with a delightful carrying case to keep it safe from harm as you shuffle through the masses. Interested? Check it later this Spring for $99.99 at Apple Stores, Guitar Center, Amazon.com and your local nondescript white van.

Lenovo Skylight hands-on and impressions (video)

We just got a chance to play with Lenovo’s Skylight smartbook, which runs the company’s new Skylight lightweight Linux OS on a 1Ghz Snapdragon. It’s an impressively clean little package, with a 10.1-inch display, an integrated WWAN card, and a neat flip-out USB thumb drive for housing user data. Ports-wise you’re not looking at much apart from mini-HDMI out, an SD card slot, and a second USB jack, although there is an internal microSD slot for more storage on top of the 8GB system drive. The idea is that all your personal info will live on the thumb drive, allowing users to just plug into any other Skylight and go — and there were some hints that accessories like Skype handsets would eventually fit into that slot and connect over USB. As for the OS itself, the six-panel interface was certainly workable, although clearly not production-ready: it managed to load webpages and do some light Twittering, although there was some stuttering along the way. We’re big fans of the chiclet keyboards Lenovo’s got going here, but the mulitouch touchpad still needs some work. The biggest sell of this thing over a netbook seems to be its promised 12 hours of battery life and its trim body, but at $499 (when most netbooks are at least $100 cheaper) we aren’t sure we get it. We can’t get that thinness of it out of our head, but we’ll be waiting on the AT&T subsided pricing on this one. Video walkthrough after the break.
