DisplayPort 1.2 receives final VESA blessing, grows into a real standard

VESA might’ve been a bit tardy with finalizing it, but DisplayPort v1.2 is now all official and it comes with an impressive tally of numbers to get your attention. Doubling the data throughput of v1.1a (from 10.8Gbps to 21.6Gbps), the latest version will be able to support multiple monitors via only a single output cable, allowing you to daisy-chain up to four 1920 x 1200 monitors, for example. It can also perform bi-directional data transfer, which will permit USB hubs, webcams, and touchscreen panels integrated into displays to communicate over the same cable as the video signal. Backwards compatibility with older peripherals is assured, but you’ll naturally need a v1.2-capable computer to exploit all this newfound goodness. You’ll find the full PR after the break.

iriver’s K1 Smart HD packs MKV video support into 3.5-inch player

The list of devices with native Matroska support is growing rapidly fueled by the preponderance of ripped HD videos living large on the torrents. iriver’s hoping to capitalize on this phenomenon by adding .MKV to the list of supported formats (including AVI, WMV, MP4, TP, MPG, ASF) inside its new 3.5-inch (480×320 pixel) K1 Smart HD personal media player offering 18 hours audio / 6 hours video playback. In addition to detailed specs we’ve also got the official pricing: ₩229,000 (about $204) for the basic 8GB model, ₩279,000 ($248) to add a DMB mobile television tuner, ₩299,000 ($266) to bump things up to 16GB, and ₩349,000 ($310) if you want the full package with WiFi, DMB, and 16GB of storage. Korea-only for now.

Humidifier S Aroma – PlusMinusZero stylish home aroma therapy

We love the Plusminuszero range of home accessories designed by Naoto Fukasawa. We’ve been reporting about them for a long time now and almost jumped out of our seats when we saw this, the latest from the brand — the Humidifier S Aroma, a sleek and tall model similar to their Version 3 humidifier.

humidifier-s-aroma-1

Coming in three chic colors, this serves as both an attractive home humidifier and also an aroma therapy tool. Pour the aroma oils into the top tray and let your living room become a fragrant, relaxing haven…

You can see why these kinds of products are popular in Japan: they blend simplistic but graceful design with efficiency. They do more than one thing (in this case, a humidifier and an aroma oil burner), and are unobtrusive spatially (paramount in those tiny Tokyo apartments we all live in!). People here don’t take home accessories for granted, even when it is a small and relatively cheap product like this one. Instead, they team up with a high-profile designer and sophistication even for a pragmatic tool.

The Humidifier S Aroma sells for $179.

Panasonic Viera G2 HDTVs boast 5,000,000:1 native contrast ratio, coming soon

We told you Panny had some crazy low black levels in its 2010 plasmas, didn’t we? Well, say hello to the retail products and their first price tags, both predictably found in Japan. The Viera G2 series is arriving within a few short weeks — February 5 to be precise — and will be headed by the 50-inch TH-P50G2, which is joined by 46- and 42-inch options. All panels boast Full HD resolution, have three ports each for HDMI and Composite cables, and are expected to cost ¥320,000, ¥260,000, and ¥220,000, respectively. That roughly equates to $3,500 for the whopper and $2,400 for the smallest family members, which when you think about that mercurial five million to one contrast ratio sounds almost like a bargain. If you can tolerate a measly 2,000,000:1 contrast, Panasonic is also announcing some more affordable S2 panels (pictured after the break), which you can have for as little as $2,100 in US money for the 42-inch variety. More machine translation-mangled information can be found in the links below.

It’s Official, Hulu Has Launched!

This article was written on March 12, 2008 by CyberNet.

At 1:46 AM today, Hulu launched to everybody in the United States after 18 weeks of private beta testing. Many of you have already been enjoying Hulu as one of their beta testers and so for you, this is no big deal. But to the thousands upon thousands of people who are just now hearing about this new way to watch TV shows and over 100 full-length movies for free, it is a big deal. At this point the service isn’t perfect, but it is a great way to catch up on shows that you may have missed.

As mentioned, at this point it’s available only to those living in the United States. This is obviously one of the huge downsides with people Internationally showing interest in the service.  So far there’s been no word from Hulu on if or when they intend to make this service available to those in other countries. Another thing that some see as a downside is that the shows aren’t available for download.

hulu launch

Content on Hulu comes from providers like Fox, NBC, MGM, Sony Pictures, Warner Bothers, Lionsgate, and more. In all, there are over fifty different providers which NewTeeVee lists. The shows and movies that they provide aren’t exactly high quality, but they’re not poor quality either.  To make money, ads are displayed for several seconds throughout the show. The one ad I remember seeing when using the service was from Nissan, but other advertising partners include Best Buy, Intel, State Farm, DirecTV, and Chilis.

Overall, I’ve been impressed with what Hulu offers. I think they have a great thing going here and it’ll be interesting to see if they’re able to succeed. Now that they’re open to the public, hopefully they’ll be able to keep up with the demand because there are already reports that the site is going a little slow today.

Misa Digital Guitar cuts the strings, brings the noise

The intersection of the classical instrument known as a guitar and the modernist urge to modify everything has resulted in plenty of nutty, zany, and just plain questionable products in its time. It’s quite a pleasure, therefore, to point you in the direction of a so-called Digital Guitar that keeps the axe looking refreshingly familiar, while turning it into something that poses a legitimate threat of actually being useful. Essentially a MIDI controller, the Misa guitar has 24 frets and a large multifunctional touchscreen, which you can use to interface with the appropriate software on your pc. We’ve got a video demonstration after the break, and you can hit up the source link for more info including details on how you might be able to buy one for yourself.

Square payment dongle demoed for iPhone toting hippies and you (video)

Ever wonder what the offspring of an after-party Twitter and Digg copulation might look like? No, well aren’t you pure and normal. Regardless, we fantasize about it all the time but never expected this iPhone payment dongle to be first from the litter. Square is Jack Dorsey’s (Twitter co-founder) new startup that now has Kevin Rose (Digg founder) on board as an investor and YouTube pitch man for the prototype payment device that plugs directly into the iPhone’s headphone jack. We’ve covered Square before but this is the first video that clearly demonstrates the full capability of the credit card swipe system on a live device. A compelling proposition for receiving cashless payments if you’re a small business owner looking to exploit irresponsible credit card debt or just the average Joe hocking goods at a garage sale, farmers market, or Craigslist. Assuming of course, Square’s cut of the transaction isn’t too egregious. Demo after the break.

NVIDIA Fermi / GF100 architectural details revealed

Fermi hardware might still be two months away, but NVIDIA has done the sage thing and released some tantalizing numbers and architectural details to keep the fanboys chirping in the meantime. The GF100 will signal the end of tiresome rebadging and clock speed massaging, and early adopters will find 512 CUDA cores, 48 ROPs, and a 384-bit GDDR5 memory interface sprawled across three billion transistors. Big changes are also afoot in how the card will do its work, with a reorganization toward a more parallel workflow leading to promises of up to eight times better geometry performance than on the GT200. HardOCP reports that anti-aliasing results have improved “notably,” while the video we’ve got stashed after the break for you shows the GF100 beating the GTX 285 handily in a Far Cry 2 benchmark. Still, the PC Perspective crew expressed some apprehension about the massive die size and how it could impact yields given the still young 40nm production process — a sentiment echoed by other publications who questioned whether NVIDIA would not have been better off trying for a less ambitious, more gaming-oriented board. We should all know that answer soon enough.

HP brings out TouchSmart tm2 tablet, upgrades dv6t and dv7t with Core i5

And now, for the hopelessly devoted HP homeboy, we present a trio of lust items. The new hotness on the converitble tablet front — the TouchSmart tm2 — is ready for shipping in exchange for nearly $950, and will endow your life with a 12-inch capacitive multitouch display, a somewhat senescent SU7300 1.3GHz ULV processor, and 3GB of DDR3 memory. Should you dare to stray into higher price ranges, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 discrete graphics and an SU9600 CPU are also available. Alternatively, you can splash $929 on the 15.6-inch dv6t, which now comes with a 2.4GHz Core i5-520M as standard, as well as free upgrades to 3GB of RAM and 320GB in storage. Graphics options here range up to an NVIDIA GeForce GT 320M with 1GB of onboard memory. Finally, the dv7t matches its smaller sibling’s upgrades but asks for $999 for the base spec, which includes a 17.3-inch display with a 1600 x 900 resolution. So there you have it, something for pretty much everyone.

Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset launched in six lush flavors (Update: video!)

Turns out that leak we saw of the Jawbone Icon was for real after all, but it was only one of the six designs straight out of Aliph’s oven: (clockwise from top left) The Thinker, The Rogue, The Hero, The Ace, The Catch and — our favorite — The Bombshell. While these are the smallest and lightest Jawbones ever, Aliph has managed to cram in an allegedly improved NoiseAssassin and simultaneous dual-phone linkage, along with an onboard ‘AudioApp’ which vocally broadcasts battery level and caller ID. If you prefer a visual indication, the Icon also does a battery gauge on the iPhone — a first on a non-Apple Bluetooth headset — and apparently “Apple’s aware of this” so a firmware update shouldn’t kill this Palm Pre-style. We’re digging the MyTALK website — currently in beta — where you can pick and install other AudioApps and DialApps (for the multifunction button; e.g. voice dialing, free directory assistance and voice-to-SMS) onto the Icon, and both will be free except for some DialApps which require subscription. Oh, and there are seven earbud sizes plus an earloop to keep everyone happy too. When you’re done with picking, hit the Verizon stores for the initial launch today and pony up $99.99. Press release and video walkthrough of the MyTALK website after the break.
