Stats: iPhone OS is still king of the mobile web space, but Android is nipping at its heels

AdMob serves north of 10 billion ads per month to more than 15,000 mobile websites and applications. Thus, although its data is about ad rather than page impressions, it can be taken as a pretty robust indicator of how web usage habits are developing and changing over time. Android is the big standout of its most recent figures, with Google loyalists now constituting a cool 42 percent of AdMob’s smartphone audience in the US. With the EVO 4G and Galaxy S rapidly approaching, we wouldn’t be surprised by the little green droid stealing away the US share crown, at least until Apple counters with its next slice of magical machinery. Looking at the global stage, Android has also recently skipped ahead of Symbian, with a 24 percent share versus 18 percent for the smartphone leader. Together with BlackBerry OS, Symbian is still the predominant operating system in terms of smartphone sales, but it’s interesting to see both falling behind in the field of web or application usage, which is what this metric seeks to measure. Figures from Net Applications (to be found at the TheAppleBlog link) and ArsTechnica‘s own mobile user numbers corroborate these findings.

New Poll: You’ve got lots of email storage, but how much do you actually use?

This article was written on March 16, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s time for a new poll! With our last poll we were wondering who you thought would be next to cash in on the big Web 2.0 jackpot, because we all know at some point there will be another big pay-out. 35% of you said Facebook, and next on the list was Digg with 24% of the votes. In third was Second Life with 11% of the votes.

PollImage

This week we are wondering how much of your email storage do you use? With Gmail expected to keep their storage counter running for another 5 years, users at that point will then have 3.4GB of storage at their disposal. Is this necessary? Do you need that additional storage?

When Gmail was first launched in April of 2004, the original press release said, “Gmail is built on the idea that users should never have to file or delete a message, or struggle to find an email they’ve sent or received.” With nearly every major webmail provider offering at least 1 GB of free storage, there’s most certainly a lot of extra storage space floating around out there, just waiting to be used.

So, how much storage space do you use?

  • 0–10 MB
  • 11–50 MB
  • 51–200 MB
  • 201–500 MB
  • 501–1000 MB
  • 1001–1500 MB
  • 1501–2000 MB
  • 2001+ MB

I’m currently using 89 MB, or 3% of the 2,828 MB of storage that I have with Gmail. As always, you can vote and view the results in the left side-bar!

iPad On Sale Sat. 9AM at Apple Stores, Most Best Buy Locations

Apple today confirmed that its “magical” (the company’s word, for the record) is set to go on sale this Saturday, April 3rd, at 9 AM. The much hyped tablet will be available at all Apple Store locations, as well as “most” Best Buys.

Customers who pick up the tablet through the Apple Store will receive free set up. Apple will also be hosting workshops for the iPad, beginning this Saturday.

As confirmed earlier, the tablet has already begun shipping for those users who bought the device the first day it was available for pre-order.

CubeSail parachute to drag old satellites from orbit, keep atmospheric roads clear

It’s not something laypeople think about very often (space debris, for those wondering), but it’s clearly on the minds of boffins at the University of Surrey. Over the years, the amount of defunct equipment hovering around beyond our view has increased significantly, with some reports suggesting that over 5,500 tonnes of exhausted kit is currently hanging around somewhere up there as a result of “abandoning spacecraft.” In order to prevent the problem from growing (and to possibly reverse some of the damage), the CubeSail has been created. Put simply (or as simply as possible), this here parachute could be remotely deployed once a satellite had accomplished what it set out to do, essentially dragging it back through a fiery re-entry that it would never survive and clearing out the orbital pathway that it was using. We’re told that it’ll be ready for deployment in late 2011, but for now you can check out an all-too-brief demonstration vid just beyond the break.

Apples iPad Begins Shipping

Rumors of delayed units aside, it seems as though Apple has already begun shipping the first round of iPads to those customers who pre-ordered the device early. Customers who ordered the tablet on the first day have started to receive Apple store shipping notices.

As Mac Rumors points out, however, just because Apple got the jump on shipping, doesn’t mean that customers will be receiving the devices before their stated April 3rd ship by date. Apple has, in the past, coordinated delayed delivery with UPS.

The Wi-Fi only devices will be the first shipped. Those who ordered 3G devices will have to wait a few weeks for their units.

HTC Desire Black Edition confirmed, coming to Orange UK in late April

Remember that little guy up there? We spotted video of the Black Edition Desire exactly a week ago, but had few details to go with it aside from the fact it existed. Now we have word from Conor Maples, Orange UK’s PR guru, saying that the operator will stock not only the standard-issue gunmetal Desire, but also the special Black Edition, which will be exclusive to Orange in the UK. The more familiar model will be arriving on the carrier’s shelves some time early next month, with the darker, edgier Desire making a fashionably late entry in the latter part of the month. Apple confirms Best Buy iPads at launch, what time you'll need to be there

We’re nearly there. The mystical, magical iPad experience starts this Saturday, April 3, and if you haven’t already pre-ordered your only way to get one for the weekend is going to be to fight the rush at retail. Apple has confirmed that all 221 of its Apple Stores will have the wunder-tablets on sale, and has also confirmed the Best Buy rumors, indicating that “most” of the big-box retailer’s locations will have them. Stores are set to open at 9:00am, so we figure you can probably roll on over there at 8:45 or so and get a good spot in line.

Coby introduces streamlined, puzzling MP570 MP3 player

Coby may not always produce the sleekest of devices, but the company has certainly come through on that count with its new MP570 MP3 player, which is bound to turn a few heads. Questionably functional design aside, however, this one is about as basic as can be, with it packing just 2GB of flash storage and no memory card slot, support for only MP3 and WMA formats, and a built-in rechargeable battery that promises just five hours of audio playback — but, hey, it sure is shiny. No word on pricing or availability just yet, nor is there any indication of how you’re actually supposed to use it.

Ears-On With V-Moda Remix Remote Headphones

remix_remote_nero_no_mic_wbg_web

V-Moda’s cellphone-compatible earbuds annoyed me the second I squeezed them into my ear canals. Then, bit by bit, they grew on me, until now they’re the favorite set of headphones I’ve been testing in Gadget Lab’s Spanish bureau.

The Remix Remotes are noise-isolating earbuds, the kind that cut down on external sound by sealing your ears with their silicone O-rings. They also have the three-button inline remote that’s getting more common, and include a microphone in the torpedo shaped pod. Paired with iPods and iPhones, you can make calls, voice-control your device, skip, play, pause and change volume. The specs are good, and the product is well-made. So what was the problem?

First, I have never liked this style of earbud. Drilling the silicon plugs into your ears until you gag is uncomfortable and inconvenient. Next was the boom that accompanies such a tight fit, with every touch of the cable sending shockwaves deep into my cochlea. Third, the controller, while easy to use, always seemed to disappear down my shirt front. It might not be fair to blame all this on the earbuds, but even so, as the week wore on, these annoyances disappeared, one by one.

First, V-Moda puts an extra-large set of silicon plugs in the kit. Once I switched to these, the buds became comfy, and I didn’t need to drive them into my brain to keep them in place. When this was fixed, the boom seemed to disappear, too, and this (along with the disappearing remote) was fixed by a small clip that hooks the cable to a collar. This is, sadly, detachable, and I detached it permanently somewhere in the city, never to be found again.

The remote itself sits on the center cord, where it splits off to the ears. If you’re used to the Apple ‘buds that put the switch on the right cord by your cheek, the fumbling to find this one can be off-putting. You get used to it, though, and the advantage is that the little torpedo is always in the same place, regardless of which way you wear the ‘buds.

Speaking of right and left, it is almost impossible to tell which is which. L and R are engraved in tiny lettering under the silicon covers. V-Moda does give you two sets of plugs, in gray and in black. Use one of each and you have color-coded earphones.

A couple more points: The metal construction doesn’t drag on your ears, and the Kevlar-reinforced cables feel pretty strong. The plug itself, covered in gold, has the cable angled at 45 degrees, which is nothing new. What I really like, though, is the metal stud on the back. This lets you push the plug in without pressing on any essential parts.

On to the sound. The Remix Remotes don’t sound as good as similarly-priced over-the-head phones, but that’s sort of not the point. With their solid construction, tangle-resistant wires, a handy remote and comfortable ‘buds, these are the headphones you’ll usually take out with you. They sound way better than Apple’s stock earbuds, too, with a decent attempt at making a stereo picture and full tones for the human voice (they’re great for podcast listening). If you want to listen to lossless jazz recordings, these aren’t for you. If you want something (fairly) affordable that you’ll use, and that will last awhile, then go ahead. You won’t be wowed, nor will you be disappointed. $100.
