Tokyo’s Eco Office: Pasona Urban Farm

Pasona O2 made headlines a few years ago for having a rice paddy inside its office. However, since last spring the project had been closed while the recruitment firm moved to their new Marunouchi location.

Well, now they’re settled in and the eco office facilities are open — even to the general public! We went down to the company headquarters near Tokyo station, the heart of the capital’s banking district, to check out the project.

It’s gone through a bit of an image change: the name has become “Urban Farm”, and the quantity and variety of plants has greatly increased. The rice field is also no longer underground, but on the first floor and fully visible — and accessible — from the street.

The Urban Farm in total covers five thousand tsubo (c.19,760 sq. yds.) and contains over two hundred kinds of plants, including tomatoes, peppers, egg plant and, of course, rice.

Staff take it in turns to tend daily to the rice paddy and the other vegetation. Though this does decrease the CO2 emissions of the building by up 2 tons a year, the objective of the project is not “just” ecological.

Team skills and communication are said to be greatly improved through the gardening duties performed by the employees. They learn wholly new things and interact with each other in ways they would never encounter without, well, a watering can! Not a bad advertisement for a human resources firm!

The rice paddy is harvested three times a year; the cultivation facilities are an improvement on usual natural conditions which yields just one annual crop. Each time the Pasona farmers can get 50kg of rice from the field. This is then used in the staff canteen on the ninth storey; though it doesn’t feed all two thousand employees in the building it adds up to roughly three thousand onigiri rice balls a year.

The second floor meeting space, with its wooden furniture and green surroundings, also leads to relaxed, informal and, perhaps, better use of time. The office and desk areas are also apparently green: this is an experiment in creating a new kind of work place, as much as an eco project.

Microsoft confirms Natal launch in October (update: Microsoft responds)

We’ve heard it before, now Microsoft’s Syed Bilal Tariq is repeating the October launch date for Natal. Speaking to GamerTagRadio, Microsoft’s marketing manager for Saudi Arabia says that the Natal launch,

“is going to be somewhere in October and we will be in a position to confirm the date at E3, which is in June, but definitely it is going to be October 2010.”

So there you have it. While we’d prefer to see an official press release on the topic, there’s little reason to doubt what you can hear for yourselves after the break.

Update: It’s not as clear-cut of a statement as we’d probably, but Microsoft has responded via email, telling G4, “Syed Bilal Tariq is not a [Microsoft] employee… He is a vendor employed through a third-party company on behalf of the Microsoft subsidiary in Saudi Arabia.” Sure, that downplays his realm of knowledge, but it doesn’t completely discredit. No comment was given as to the October date. At least E3’s a few hours closer now, right?

The Home Depot takes LED lighting mainstream with $20 bulbs

Slowly but surely, LED light bulbs have been getting brighter and more efficient, but price has always been a major factor staying their adoption. Back in 2007, a single 308 lumen bulb cost $65, and the more things changed, the more they’ve stayed the same. Now, out of the blue, The Home Depot has stepped forward with a cost-effective alternative. For $20, the new EcoSmart LED bulb promises a 429 lumen, 40W equivalent with a 50,000 hour expected lifetime, making it cheaper and nearly as powerful as the 450 lumen, $40-50 design industry heavyweight GE unveiled last month. Best of all, it’s already available for purchase (though backordered) at our source link. Honestly, we’re starting to wonder what the catch is. PR after the break.

Opera 9 Will Now Have Weekly Builds Offered To The Public

Opera 9 Will Now Have Weekly Builds Offered To The Public

In order to get ‘power users’ to flock to Opera they decided to release weekly builds of Opera 9. The most current release is Opera 9 Build 8219 for the PC and Build 3224 for the Mac. On their homepage they also offer a changelog to let users know what has been fixed in the current build. This may be a smart move for Opera, but from my experience with Opera 9 it will not be pulling people away from Firefox. The only cool thing that Opera 9 has is BitTorrent functionality built in, but Firefox will soon have an extension for that.

Xbox 360 3D gaming a reality with LG partnership

The image above is unmistakeable: 3D gaming on an Xbox 360 with the help of an LG 3D television. From the looks of the Korean press release, LG and Microsoft have entered into a memorandum of understanding to jointly market LG’s new 3D televisions along side 3D-capable Xbox 360 games in South Korea, then later expand the partnership throughout the Asia Pacific region. If we’re reading this correctly then it appears set to begin by bundling Xbox 360 3D games with LG 55/47LX9500 LED televisions sometime at the end of June. In other words, we’re not seeing anything specific claiming new Xbox 360 hardware, just like we’ve seen on the PS3.

Update:
Here’s a statement direct from Microsoft US on the partnership and the future of 3D Xbox 360 gaming:

3D games are available today on Xbox 360 and will continue to evolve. Today, you can buy a 3DTV and wear glasses to play games like Avatar and “Batman: Arkham Asylum.” The promotional partnership with LG announced in South Korea today is specific to the South Korean market, but is further evidence that as 3D adoption grows, Xbox 360 will support 3D games and entertainment.

Motorola Flipout spotted: an Android 2.1 / Motoblur device with a twist

Remember “Square Motorola Android slider?” Ah, those were the days. The little twister’s returned, this time with much greater clarity and a new name. Meet Flipout. According to Gizmodo Brazil, we’re looking at Android 2.1 with a dash of Motoblur thrown into the mix, a 2.8-inch display, full QWERTY keyboard, 700MHz processor, 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM, GPS, and a 3.1 megapixel camera. The HSPA phone is expected in the states this June in at least three different colors — black, green, and pink. Backflip, Flipout… one can only hope Motorola keeps the trend alive with a Soundgarden-themed solar phone, the Outshined.

Lenovo officially rolls out new IdeaPad Z Series

Typical loose-lipped Lenovo had a bit of a hard time keeping its new IdeaPad Z Series a secret, but at least now we can see why. First off, the new line of laptops ditches the glossy, fingerprint-loving covers for ones with a “metallic effect,” and even better, the entire line sports chiclet keyboards that are similar to that on the S10-3. If you haven’t noticed, we really have a major thing for Lenovo keyboards lately. And while the laptops may come in at under 1.2-inches thick, the 13.3-inch Z360 and the 15.6-inch Z560 have onboard optical drives, and both pack standard-voltage Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processor options. Oddly, Lenovo doesn’t seem to be announcing the 14-inch Z460 we had seen a few weeks back, but we assume that one will be up for grabs in other markets. Though the lowest end $649 config won’t have NVIDIA GeForce 315M graphics or Blu-ray, it should pack enough power to handle watching that cute girl cry over Justin Bieber on YouTube and those other necessary productivity tasks. Sneaking into the new family is also the 15.6-inch Z565, which differs from its new-born brothers with a glossy black cover and AMD internals. Like the HP ProBooks and Dell Inspiron M501R, the Z565 can be configured with AMD’s newest quad-core Phenom II X4, as well as with other new Phenom II, Turion II, Athlon II and V Series processors. We’d imagine there will be good deals popping up all over the place, but unfortunately all of the systems won’t be available until June. In the meantime, you’ve always got the the gallery and press release below to cheer you up.

Lenovo IdeaPad U Series updated with Core i3, i5, i7 ULV processors

Well, thank you, Lenovo! Not only for updating the thin and light IdeaPad U Series laptops with new chiclet keyboards and ambient light sensors, but for finally giving us some details on Intel’s new Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors. That’s right, the new IdeaPad U lappies will be available at the beginning of June and will pack brand new Core 2010 ULV chips, which is in line with what we have heard about the release. Like the current U Series, the 11.6-inch U160, 13-inch U360,14-inch U460 and 15-inch U560 all measure less an an inch-thick and don’t weigh more than 3.8 pounds. And according to the spec sheets, all will be configurable with your pick of ultra-low-voltage Core i7 (1.6GHz Core i7-640UM, 1.06GHz Core i7-620UM), Core i5 (1.2GHz Core i5-540UM, 1.06GHz Core i5-520UM, 1.2GHz Core i5-430UM) and Core i3 (1.2GHz Core i3-330UM) processors. There’s no indication of discrete graphics options, but on the lower end there are also be Pentium and Celeron processor choices — we’re assuming the $679 starting SKU doesn’t get the Core 2010 ULV love. We don’t have any performance stats from Lenovo, but it does claim that the entire series continues to be all about portability and long battery life. Regardless, we’re still extremely excited about the entire group, though something about that 11.6-inch U160 and the ability to configure it with a Core i7 UM processor has us exceptionally giddy. We’re hoping to spend more time with these soon, but till then, be sure and check out the hands-on pics below.

Lenovo IdeaCentre Q150 upgrades to Atom D510, keeps NVIDIA Ion, 1080p playback, and ultraslim look

The world might be all abuzz about Ion 2 already, but we reckon we can still make room for an NVIDIA Ion nettop that measures a malnourished 21mm in width and offers full 1080p video playback. The successor to Lenovo’s IdeaCentre Q110, the Q150 is built around a pair of Intel Atom options — the single-core D410 or dual-core D510, both running at 1.6GHz — and will come with Windows 7 Home (Basic or Premium) preloaded, built-in WiFi, a quartet of USB 2.0 ports, and an HDMI output should you pick up the Ion option. The wireless Multimedia Remote with Keyboard is also optional, but Lenovo seems to rightly expect you to want one in order to match the stylishness of the machine. The starting price for this little beaut is listed at $249, with availability by the end of June, but expect to pay quite a bit more for the fully outfitted option above. One more intimate pic of the Q150 awaits after the break.
