Scenes from E3 2010, Day Zero

A slideshow of scenes from the unofficial first day of E3 2010, including the Xbox and EA press briefings. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20007706-10391702.html” class=”origPostedBlog”E3 2010/a/p

Xbox 360 Arcade to eventually be replaced by $199 new Xbox 360; data transfer cable will be $20

Liking the form factor, but not the price? You could settle for an existing Xbox 360 Elite, Pro or Arcade, as we hear the introduction of the new Xbox 360 is being accompanied by a $50 price cut on existing units, but if your heart’s set on that glossy black, there’s a cheaper Stealthbox coming down the pike eventually. GameSpot reports a slim Xbox 360 Arcade successor will appear after the now-discontinued SKUs sell out for the same $200 as before. Not exactly surprising, but it’s always nice to know.

And if you’ve preordered your shiny new Xbox 360 but have a older unit at home, you’re going to need a little something to move those profiles, avatars and game licenses over. Should you have an Elite (or if you’ve upgraded your hard drive) you might find the cable you need between your couch cushions, but on the off-chance your Xbox 360 Hard Drive Data Migration Transfer Kit hit the dumpster long ago, you’re not entirely out of luck. The one-way, single-use device will retail soon for $20, a mere $5 more than what it costs at the Microsoft Store — or $19 more than used cables fetch on eBay.

Dell hit by Intel’s antitrust aftershocks, prepares for $100 million settlement

Hounded by international antitrust allegations, Intel fired an initial $1.25 billion salvo’s worth of settlement last year, but now Chipzilla’s biggest distributor of silicon is feeling the heat as well. Dell publicly announced it has set aside a $100 million reserve fund to head off investigations at the pass with a potential settlement of its own. While the company doesn’t admit wrongdoing, it recognizes “alleged violations of negligence-based fraud provisions,” also known as accepting Intel’s controversial chip rebates without reporting them to the government. Dell’s actually been under SEC investigation since 2005 for accounting-related transgressions and the company now hopes to tie up all loose ends at once — here’s hoping we see cheaper Core i7-infused laptops whether or not execs pull it off.

Kinect, the new Xbox 360, and ESPN: highlights from Microsoft at E3 2010

My, what big showing you have there, Microsoft. We’re still recovering from today and yesterday’s big Xbox 360 Kinect unveiling party, but let’s take a brief trip down short-term memory lane. First, Project Natal became Kinect, unveiled a handful of interesting / guaranteed-to-embarrass uses, and solidified its November release date. Then ESPN3 made an impressive debut on Xbox Live. Finally, the piece de resistance, a slimmed down Xbox 360 250GB that came (almost) out of nowhere and hits retail as soon as physically possible. Everywhere Microsoft was this past 24 hours, so were we:

EA says Xbox 360 can do 3D

We just received a press release from EA claiming that Crysis 2 “will be the first major video game on multiple platforms to take full advantage of true stereoscopic 3D.” Up until now, we’ve been under the assumption that the PlayStation 3 is the only current generation console capable of 3D. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20007703-10391702.html” class=”origPostedBlog”E3 2010/a/p

Chrome OS build internals confirm Acer, Dell, and HP hardware coming?

Chrome OS build internals confirm Acer, Dell, and HP hardware coming?

We’re getting closer and closer to Google’s planned Chrome OS release this fall, but still the hardware side of the equation is looking a little less shiny. As of today we don’t know exactly who will be bringing Google’s little laptop OS to retail first, but now we have a few more clues. Google’s code repository contains build configurations for Acer, Dell, and HP hardware, suggesting the OS is being tested by those manufacturers, and while this isn’t hard confirmation of device support it does back up what we’ve heard previously. Acer was rumored to actually show hardware at Computex (it didn’t), Dell has already shown Chrome OS running on a netbook, and HP was one of the many that Google indicated was aboard when Chrome partners were announced last year. In other words: no real surprises here, but it’s an encouraging indicator just the same.

Verizon MiFi surgically implanted in iPad to create world’s first bionic tablet

Sometimes, hackers hack without any constructive purpose — they do it just because they can. This, however, decidedly isn’t such a case; in fact, it’s one of the more enviable hackjobs we’ve seen in recent weeks. Basically, a dude split open his 3G iPad, removed the AT&T modem, and installed the circuit board out of a Verizon MiFi, providing power from the iPad’s battery and hooking in the borrowed AT&T antenna for hotspot range. The hack wasn’t without its trials and tribulations — the MiFi’s green LED initially shone through the back of the iPad’s display, for instance — but ultimately, the proud owner ended up with a fully functional iPad that doubles as a Verizon WiFi hotspot. It’s not exactly turnkey enough to recommend to lay folk, but at least Verizon customers can take heart knowing this kind of craziness is possible if you’ve got the stones for it.

[Thanks, Peter]

E3 2010: EA Debuts New Madden, Crysis, Need for Speed, and Star Wars Titles

eacrysis2screen.jpg

Electronic Arts helped kick off E3 2010 today with a flashy press conference at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The company set the stage for the spectacle to come by handing out Crysis 2-branded 3D glasses to all present.

The event highlighted 10 new games from the game-publishing giant, including new additions to the Medal of Honor, Need for Speed, Crysis, and Dead Space franchises. Also on display was new Star Wars title and the latest Madden game, the latter of which was presided over by football legend, Joe Montana.

The event opened with a quick and loud trailer for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. The latest addition to the popular racing series lets the user decide whether to play as a cop or racer, the two sides pitted against each other in the titular “hot pursuit.” The game will be available on November 16th.

Next up was a brief “cliff hanger” demo for Dead Space 2. Steve Papoutsis, the game’s executive producer, promised that the remainder of the demo would be shown during the Sony PlayStation media event tomorrow morning. The game is due out on January 25th of next year.

The latest Medal of Honor game got arguably the flashiest demo of the event, as PCs dropped on a rig from the theater ceiling for a 24-person multi-player game. The game abandons the series’ familiar WW II settings for the deserts of Afghanistan. It will be available on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on October 12th. A playable beta will be made available on June 21st.
