The Zomm Has Arrived: A Wireless Leash for Your Phone

Zomm.jpg

It got some attention when it was shown at CES, and now the Zomm is available for purchase. A new category of gadget, the Zomm is a wireless leash for your Bluetooth-enabled phone, among other things. Pair it to your phone (with just one button click) and, if your phone ever gets over 30 feet away from you, the Zomm will vibrate, flash, and sound an alarm. It’s a great choice for the forgetful among us who’ve left phones in cabs or at coffee shops, or even at home.

But that’s not all the Zomm is. It’s also a Bluetooth speakerphone and a personal safety alarm. Hold the center button for nine seconds, and the Zomm sounds a loud panic alarm. Keep holding it, and the device will dial emergency assistance for you. You can now go online to grab a Zomm in either black or white for $79.99.  Also, look for it in Best Buy stores in July.

Dont E-mail ATT CEO: Cease and Desist Letters May Follow

For a man who runs one of the largest tech companies in the world, Steve Jobs can be surprisingly responsive when it comes to returning e-mails, making folks like me feel all the worse when it comes to our general neglect in that area. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, on the other hand, is apparently not quite to eager to field questions from you, the customer.

Engadget reader Giorgio Galante reportedly received a warning after e-mailing the CEO twice in two weeks. AT&T’s Executive Response Team apparently sent Galante a warning, adding that they would send out a cease-and-desist letter upon receiving further e-mails.

Galante’s first e-mail was a request to have his iPhone eligibility date changed. The second was a question about tethering. He then received a call from an AT&T rep named Brent who mentioned the possibility of legal action.

Samsung Galaxy Tab revealed

If only there were more tablets in the world, you know? Samsung has heard the call, and truth be told they might have a nice crack at creating something desirable. The 7-inch Galaxy Tab (previously referred to as the S-Pad), runs Android with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top (similar to the Galaxy S sitting next to it). According to the Tweets by Samsung Blog South Africa — an odd place indeed to make this sort of unveiling — it has a “high resolution” screen, and it’s supposed to be AMOLED if an earlier leak on the “S-Pad” is to be believed. That S-Pad info also mentioned a Samsung Apps store, which would make sense because as far as we know Google isn’t letting “official” Android Market-equipped, Google-blessed tablets out of the gate just yet.

Chevy, OnStar to Train Emergency First Responders on EVs

2011_Chevy_Volt.jpg
Chevrolet and OnStar, along with the International Association of Fire Fighters and several related emergency organizations, have announced a new training program designed to educate first responders on how to deal with electric vehicles.
Training sessions will feature the upcoming Chevy Volt, and will begin in Chicago in late August, with first-responder sessions in other major cities to follow immediately thereafter. Volt displays will also appear at various emergency industry conferences beginning in June.
The training will include animations and illustrations of the Volt, showing cut points for extrication, first-responder labeling, automatic and manual electric shut-offs, and other features crucial to a proper emergency response.
“Technological changes in the automotive industry require changes in fire and emergency service operations as well,” said Chief Jack Parow, first vice president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, in a statement. “The IAFC is proud to work with Chevrolet and OnStar to ensure that fire responders are adequately trained in how to work with the new technology, both for their own safety and the safety of those they serve.”

IPad Camera Connection Kit Sells for $187.50 on Ebay

Desperate to get ahold of the back-ordered iPad Camera Connection Kit (current waiting time 3-4 weeks)? Willing to spend almost $200 to have one sooner? Nah, of course not, but you’re a smart Gadget Lab reader. Not a bit like the dunce who bought the “autentic” two-piece USB kit on Ebay for $187.50, (winning bid pictured above).

That high price is an exceptional one, but the kit, which lets you connect cameras and SD cards to the iPad (as well as some keyboards and sound devices) is going for around $70 on the auction site, and they seem to be selling.

I have mine on pre-order from Apple, and I’m happy to wait. I might have paid a fortune to get my iPad shipped in from the US a couple of weeks early, but even I’m not dumb enough to drop the price of a point and shoot camera on a simple card reader. But hey, if you really need one, at least that $187.50 comes with free shipping.

Inventec’s Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop

Inventec's Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop

It may sound like a mid-boss in some forgotten and poorly translated NES game, but Dr. Eye (aka the N18C) is actually a sort of keyboard-endowed MID from Inventec. This chubby clamshell sports a QWERTY keyboard, a 4.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, and a front-facing webcam. Power is said to come from a “Marvell 624,” which we’re guessing is a 624MHz PXA310 and, while it’s currently running 1.6, word is that it’ll be dipped in 2.1’s creamy filling in the near future. When will delivery be? Inventec has been showing this guy off since last year, and while the person doing the demonstration indicates they’ll be available “pretty soon” at a price point around $400, we found this guy for sale already at a price of 2688 yuan, or about $395. So, if you’re eager to get computing and prefer donuts to eclairs, we wish you happy importing.
