But first, we’ll take a few moments to finally put E3 2010 to rest and go over a few things we thought was a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-21539_7-10003835.html”missing from the show/a. We’ll also chat about the new Xbox 360 slim and figure out why the new console a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20008087-10391702.html”can’t red-ring even if it wanted to/a. On the other hand, there will be a href=”http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100621/tc_nm/us_microsoft_kinect;_ylt=AuaXUa9KmMw1kaO2GZ4qHtd0fNdF”some attractive Kinect bundles/a come November 4 that we want to share as well.
/pp
Finally, we’ll check out trailers from some of our most anticipated games coming out of E3 2010 including Bulletstorm, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, inFamous 2, and Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

Verizon’s Droid Eris goes on permanent vacation

You might have figured that the recent update to Android 2.1 would’ve given Verizon’s Droid Eris a few months of additional shelf life, but alas, it was not to be; the phone is no longer available from Verizon’s online store, and we’d assume that any remaining inventory in the field will dwindle to nothingness in the coming weeks. If anything, it seems like the device — basically a tweaked Hero — would be able to effectively soldier on indefinitely for $50 or so on contract, but maybe the carrier’s intent on keeping Android a higher-end affair for the time being. And hey, with the Droid X and Droid 2 coming any week now, we suppose it’s getting pretty crowded anyhow. Ultra-cheap original Droid, anyone?

MeeGo for tablets gets a pre-alpha video demonstration

We managed to grab some hands-on time with a Moorestown-powered MeeGo tablet prototype during the hustle and bustle that was Computex 2010, but if you’re looking for a more subdued, PBS-approved rundown of what the forthcoming operating system will offer, you’re in the right place. Hosted up just after the break is a video demo of the pre-alpha user interface, complete with a finger-led walkthrough of the entire system. We’ll be frank — what we’re seeing here is downright dazzling, and it all looks a heck of a lot easier to wrap one’s noodle around than a full-on copy of Win7. Peek it for yourself, won’t you?

[Thanks, Allen]

Four major holes in Google Voice

Google has made its free voice service open to anyone in the U.S., but there are some major holes in the less-than-perfect product that Google can, should, and probably will (eventually) fix.

Samsung Windows Phone 7 prototype hands-on

It’s been a bit of a unicorn since making a quick appearance at MIX, but we just got the chance to go hands-on with Samsung’s Omnia i8910-based Windows Phone 7 prototype phone. Interestingly, we were told that this hardware will never be released to market — it’s just for testing purposes right now. That testing is going quite well, as far as we can see — Microsoft’s people are starting to carry WP7 devices as their personal phones now, and while the software is still quite buggy, the build we saw in action was noticeably faster than before. We were also told that the hardware in the pipeline — particularly from Samsung — is apparently quite spectacular, and that this particular device doesn’t represent the launch set of devices. We’ll have to see — we actually thought this prototype was quite handsome in person, although it’s a little thicker than you might expect. Hit up the gallery for some more pics!

Intel’s X25-M and X25-V SSDs now stocked on Best Buy’s shelves

Best Buy selling some new hard drives may not exactly sound like news, but it is when the drives in question are Intel’s X25-M and X25-V SSDs, which just so happen to be the first SSDs that Best Buy has ever stocked on its store shelves. Those should now be available at some 800 Best Buy stores across the U.S., although you’ll still have to go online if you want anything other than the 40GB or 80GB models. Let’s just hope this push into retail is soon followed by some more consumer-friendly prices.

First iPhone 4 reviews

Iomega’s 500GB ‘Skin’ external HDDs boast designs your mom wouldn’t approve of

For better or worse, these ain’t your grandmother’s hard drives. Iomega has teamed up with Skin Industries in order to debut some of the wildest, zaniest looking 2.5-inch portable HDDs this planet has ever seen, with a trio of designs shipping today. When speaking with the company, we were told that these three were sort of a trial run to see if consumers were actually into such exotic pieces, but we got the impression that we may end up seeing more if this does indeed spark a new craze. The Iomega Skin drives — outside of the exterior — aren’t that radical within; you’ll find USB 2.0 connectivity and a single 500GB option to choose from. For now, $119.99 gets you a Knock Out, Red Hot or Radical (shown above and throughout) skinned hard drive, and while we didn’t exactly expect these to be crafted with precision, we were thrilled to find that our own unit had the logos baked into the plastic — no stickers or decals here. If you’re into the graphics, the drive itself looks pretty sharp, but we can’t help but wish there was an option to slap our own Photoshop creations onto this thing. In related news, SIIG managed to push out the world’s first 4- and 7-port USB 3.0 hubs, which handled a multi-drive transfer with poise and precision during our brief testing; of course, we couldn’t push the new Iomega drive to SuperSpeed or anything, but if you’re in need of a product to help you simultaneously connect all seven of the USB 3.0 devices in existence today, they’re available in the US for $59.99 a pop.
