New iPhone 3GS 8GB features redesigned box with iOS 4

Couldn’t very well have an iPhone for sale showing an outdated version of the operating system, now, could you? Just wouldn’t be civilized.

Nokia: pre-alpha release of MeeGo for handsets coming June 30th

We’ve already gotten an early peek at what’s in store for MeeGo on handsets courtesy of some leaked UI guidelines, and it looks like folks now won’t have to wait too much longer to try it out for themselves — Nokia has confirmed that the pre-alpha release will be available on June 30th. That will be followed by the “fully productized” version sometime in October, which should also coincide with the release of some actual MeeGo-based handsets. No further details beyond that just yet, but N900 users should be the first to get a taste of a true MeeGo handset experience — despite Nokia’s lack of official support.

Early Preview: Disney TRON: Legacy Action Figures with Impulse Projection Technology

At Disney Consumer Product’s TRON: Legacy preview yesterday, I was really captivated by these action figures. The company used “impulse projection technology” to project an illuminated, moving image of the actor’s face into the figure’s helmet as it speaks phrases from the movie. I’ve never seen anything quite like this in a toy!

Most of the figures are 7.5 inches; one special Ultimate Sam Flynn figure will be 12 inches. Prices range from $15 to $40 list. Look for the toys this holiday season.

ATT Walk-Ins for iPhone 4 Begin Next Week

A number of customers who pre-ordered Apple’s iPhone 4 have reported receiving the handset — two days before its official release date. Also, those who didn’t pre-order the device will be able to pick one up at an AT&T store on a first-come, first-serve basis as soon as next Tuesday.

An AT&T spokesman said iPhone 4 will begin arriving this week for customers who preordered. Those who preordered an iPhone 4 for home delivery will receive an e-mail when their order is shipped. The company will also begin phoning customers this week who placed reservations to notify them when their iPhone 4 is available for in-store pickups. Last, customers who did not preorder the device will be able to line up for an iPhone 4 at an AT&T store next Tuesday.

“iPhone 4 pre-order sales on June 15 were 10 times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3GS last year,” AT&T said in a statement Tuesday. “Demand is simply unprecedented.  We’re thrilled to see the excitement around iPhone 4 and are committed to helping as many customers as quickly as we can. As we said last week, we’re committed to fulfilling preorders first – and are on track to do so.”

AT&T’s announcement followed individual reports from pre-order customers who claimed their iPhone 4 had already arrived in the mail.

The release of the iPhone 4 has been bumpy, to say the least. When Apple and AT&T opened preorders for the iPhone 4 last week, their servers were overwhelmed by the gigantic number of preorders, and in some instances AT&T’s website even sprung a security leak. Later, Apple and AT&T said the problems were due to an unprecedented number of preorders — 600,000 on day one.

UPDATED: The first version of this story incorrectly stated that AT&T would start delivering iPhones this week.

Virgin Mobile MiFi Outed by Best Buy, Coming Next Week

virgin-mifi.jpgPrepaid carrier Virgin Mobile will be introducing a Novatel MiFi router next week, the company told us after the device appeared at a Best Buy summer preview event this morning.

Virgin Mobile’s MiFi, like the models available for Sprint and Verizon Wireless, is a slim little router that turns 3G signal into a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices.

Since this is Virgin Mobile, this MiFi will be entirely prepaid – $149 for the device, and then anywhere from $10 for 100 MB to $60 for 5 GB. When you need more data, you can re-up. (Virgin has a full chart of their data rates on their Web site.) Activation is simple and there are no activation fees; you can top up
your account with credit or debit cards, or Virgin Mobile top-up cards
bought at local retailers.

Virgin is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sprint and uses Sprint’s 3G EVDO Rev A network, so I’d expect download speeds around 1 Mbps. The device has 4 hours of battery life while online and 40 hours of standby time, the company said.

We reviewed Virgin Mobile’s Broadband2Go USB modem last year, and Virgin has since improved their service plans. You get 5 GB for $60 on both Sprint postpaid and Virgin prepaid now, but you can also buy smaller buckets of data on Virgin, and you don’t have to sign up for a contract.

The MiFi will be available at Best Buy, Radio Shack and online starting next Monday, June 28.

Borders Offers $20 Gift Card With Purchase of Kobo E-Reader

Kobo_eReader.jpg

In the wake of price drops on the Barnes & Noble Nook and Amazon Kindle, Borders announced Tuesday that it would bundle its Kobo e-reader with a $20 Borders gift card.

The Kobo is priced at $149.99, while the smaller Libre eBook Reader Pro sells for $119.

Borders’ shoppers normally get $5 in “Borders Bucks” after spending $150. With this promotion, people who buy a Kobo will also get $10 in Borders Bucks in addition to the $20 gift card.

The company also released an app for the iPhone and iPad that will allow Kobo users to purchase eBooks content. To promote the release, users who show their Borders eBooks app on the iPhone or iPad will get a free coffee at Borders’ Seattle’s Best Coffee cafes for a limited time. The app is available on Borders.com.

Borders released an Android eBooks app on Monday.

No pre-order? AT&T won’t have an iPhone 4 for you until June 29

The thinking all along was that there’d be an allocation of unreserved iPhone 4s in AT&T stores this Thursday for customers who didn’t bother to (or couldn’t) pre-order the phone ahead of time, but not so much. Turns out that the extra stock won’t be arriving until June 29, at which point it’ll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online. Of course, this is strictly an AT&T announcement — Apple Stores and Best Buys are still possibilities — but basically, there’s no point in lining up on the 24th at your local AT&T shop unless you’ve got confirmation that a reserved phone is available for you. Follow the break for AT&T’s full statement.
