According to Microsoft MSN Spaces is going to be transitioned into Windows Live Spaces. I hadn’t heard of this until JCXP pulled up some details on the service. When I started to research it myself I noticed that Microsoft talked about this in November of 2005 and said that Windows Live Spaces will replace MSN Spaces:
Microsoft will continue to invest in services that help people express themselves, and find, connect and nurture deeper relationships with others around the world. MSN Spaces will transition to Windows Live Spaces as Microsoft adds new features to the service next year.
Windows Live Spaces looks pretty slick and I am sure that they are trying to overcome their competitors like MySpace. If you look at the features list then you will notice that you can add gadgets:
Want to add the local time and temp to your space? Or satellite images of the earth? How about an Xbox gamer tag? You can do all that and more with gadgets! Gadgets are mini-applications that deliver local information, lookup things, show statistics and just about anything you want, because they’re customizable.
They are definitely trying to make it easy for everyone to add a lot to their “space” and easily customize it. They have also added a feature that will allow people to see who your friends are. You can go beyond who your friends are by seeing who your friend’s friends are and so on. Pretty soon they will probably have a feature so that you can view a “family tree” of your friends .
With all of Microsoft’s Windows Live services I think it is almost time to welcome them to the social networking “club”. They are really expanding and allowing people to connect to each other in one convenient spot: Live.com!

Internet Explorer 9 Beta review
Posted in: Chrome, Internet Explorer, Microsoft, NVIDIA, review, Today's Chili, video, windows 7, Windows7 Digg
If you’re anything like us, as soon as you get a new PC there’s a laundry list of things you do: uninstall every piece of crapware, change the desktop wallpaper, and fire up Internet Explorer 8 to download a new browser like Firefox or Chrome. Without fail, we’ve repeated that last step on every Windows laptop we’ve reviewed in the last year. Why is it that we almost instantly replace IE with another option? There are lots of reasons, but to name a few… the browser usually comes plastered with toolbars, which makes it painfully slow to load even just a simple news site. And even when those are uninstalled it feels sluggish in comparison to Firefox and Chrome. Also, it’s just not as attractive or intuitive as the others. Oh, and then there are the smaller items, like the fact that it lacks a download manager or uses more RAM than the competition.
That’s no short list of complaints, but you can’t say Microsoft hasn’t been listening. It’s been saying for months that Internet Explorer 9 — which is now available for download as a public beta — will mend all those issues and then some. A lot of the improvements come in speed — Redmond’s been talking about hardware acceleration since November of last year — but there are some other interesting features such as “Pinned Sites” and “One Box” that Microsoft’s been less vocal about. So, does IE9 live up to the hype and will it finally give us a preloaded browser that’s fast enough to run with the others? Should you run along and download it right now? We’ve spent the last week using it as our primary browser on a number of different laptops to find out. We’ll meet again in our full review after the break.

Video: Steve Jobs, Ninja in Disguise
Posted in: Apple, Miscellaneous, steve jobs, Today's Chili, videosWhoosh. As fast as a ninja can swoop in for a kill, Taiwanese animators have already parodied Tuesday’s bogus news report about Steve Jobs attempting to smuggle ninja stars from Japan.
Bloomberg on Tuesday published a rumor pulled from a Japanese tabloid claiming that Jobs had vowed never to visit Japan again after airport security guards refused to let him bring ninja throwing stars onto his private jet. Apple later said the story was “pure fiction.”
Way to spoil the fun, Apple. Anyway, here’s how it might have looked if the incident had really happened:
Famous for its CG reenactments of news stories about Steve Jobs, Tiger Woods and other celebrities, Next Media Animation is a small animation outfit located in Taiwan. Wired magazine published a feature story on Next Media Animation in this month’s print edition.

New Amazon Ad Shows Kindle As Sexy Competitor
Posted in: amazon, e ink, e-books, kindle, Miscellaneous, Tablets and E-Readers, Today's ChiliAmazon’s new commercial puts the Kindle in the best possible light: poolside, in the hands of a beautiful, bikini-clad woman. It even works in a dig at the iPad and other LCD tablets; the dweeby guy next to the Kindle reader can only see his own ugly reflection.
This video has been percolating around the tech blogosphere for a couple of days, but I don’t think anyone has gotten it quite right. (I was off yesterday. Sorry.) I honestly don’t think it’s about competing with the iPad, or touting the benefits of non-reflective screens, as much as it’s about re-positioning the Kindle in the popular imagination.
Think back three years to when the Kindle was first announced. Yes, there was a splashy cover story about the future of reading. But everyone agreed: the device itself was ugly, it was expensive, and its market was limited to rich bookwormy dorks who needed something to read on airplanes. There, the physical world could vanish, leaving behind the virtual mindspace of a not-quite-real book.
Now, the Kindle is stylish; it’s relatively inexpensive; and the world in which you read from it doesn’t look like a place you’d want to escape from at all. That is, apart from your nosy neighbors and their self-involved not-quite-pickup lines.

HTC Sense’s new map pre-caching demoed on video
Posted in: demo, HTC, htc sense, HtcSense, maps, sense, Today's Chili, videoIf you were paying attention during HTC’s keynote earlier this morning, you’ll have noted Peter Chou dropped a big old promise on us all: no more waiting for maps to load when zooming or scrolling. Pre-cached maps are one of the headline new features in the upgraded Sense that accompanies the Desire HD and Desire Z‘s announcement today, so we naturally had to go have a peek for ourselves. Requiring no internet connection, the Desire HD on hand sauntered through the streets of Sao Paulo and it was true that there were none of the aggravating grey squares of doom that we’ve grown used to when panning around. What isn’t true, however, is HTC’s claim that there’s no waiting to be done. Responsiveness on these maps is far from perfect and patience will still need to be exercised. Notably, HTC said that you’ll be able to download city maps free of charge, but navigation and other additional services will cost you. A final note is merited for the use of the phone’s digital compass to rotate the map with you — so that the map adjusts itself to whatever direction you point the phone. A very classy little inclusion.
Eric Lin was on hand to answer the question of when this new Sense might trickle down to the classic Desire or other handsets in HTC’s portfolio. Well, his answer was a non-answer: no roadmap or schedule has been set and HTC isn’t ruling anything out just yet.
