Can Your Daughter Do This? Super-Awesome Sylvia’s Super-Simple Arduino

GeekDad has already repeatedly geeked out over Sylvia’s Super-Awesome Maker Show, and Bruce Sterling gave her newest episode a “Holy cow, kid” at Beyond the Beyond yesterday, but Gadget Lab readers need to see it for themselves.

“Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced microcontroller engineer,” Sylvia says, “here’s two projects me and my dad came up with to get your brain going.” After watching her break down using the Arduino, I actually feel like I could build a Randomly Influenced Finger Flute or MintyBoost of my very own now.

Also, the video’s directorial style is so fine it makes Rushmore-era Wes Anderson look like a hobo. Just sayin’.

Sony’s head units Xplod into the infotainment scene with TomTom GPS on in-dash screens

They may not have been the highlight of Sony’s IFA 2010 press conference, but the company’s new XNV head units deserve a place of their own, given they integrate full-blown TomTom GPS units and audio/video playback into their 7- and 6.1-inch WVGA touchscreens. Presently destined for Europe, the XNV-L77BT, XNV-770BT, XNV-L66BT and XNV-660BT will ship in November with TeleAtlas maps of 45 nations for a number of undisclosed prices, with each sporting Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB jacks, DivX playback and a DVD drive. The presumably-more-expensive “L” models also come with the usual array of traffic and weather alerts plus a Google-powered local search function, and all four decks sport a music recommendation engine that reportedly changes track based on your mood… though how the system measures your emotional attentions, we’re not quite sure, and hope to find out soon. Press release after the break.

Sony Qriocity on-demand movie service extends into Europe, ‘Music Unlimited’ coming by year’s end

Sony has just informed Euroland that its Qriocity on-demand ecosystem will be showing up in the continent’s wealthier regions this fall. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK will get a chance to savor the Video On Demand option, which will form the vanguard of a wideranging content streaming service, available on Sony networked devices — yes, that includes the do-it-all PlayStation 3. The heavyweight movie studios behind the venture include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount and, of course, Sony’s moviemaking arm. But you already knew that, given that the whole enchilada’s been available to American gringos since April. All Qriocity participants will get to use a new Music Unlimited service, which is launching by the end of the year with as yet undetermined pricing. Plans are also afoot to offer Qriocity on third party devices, but until then you’ll wanna make sure to have one of them newfangled web-connected Bravia TVs or any of the litany of Blu-ray players and home theater setups Sony is busy promoting right this minute.

Sony’s new S-Frames touching down with AVCHD video playback

Try as we might, we can’t totally dismiss Sony’s new digiframes. Sure, we find the things kind of played out, but at least the S-Frame DPF-XR100 and DPF-VR100 models (due in November for $250 and $200) now offer AVCHD video support along with the usual 10.2-inch WSVGA LED backlight LCD display. If that weren’t enough, the just announced DPF-D830 will also be out in November ($150), and while it doesn’t support hi-def video, the 8-inch device is the company’s first with a built-in rechargeable battery (up to 100 minutes). Wild, huh? PR after the break.

Sony announces Bloggie Touch pocket video camera

Remember Sony’s Bloggie line of pocket camcorders announced back at CES? While those may have been a bit forgettable, the company’s just-announced Bloggie Touch video camera makes a considerably stronger first impression (if you can get past the name). Boasting a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen wrapped in what appears to be a brushed aluminum body, this one packs 4GB or 8GB of internal memory, and will capture full 1080p video as well as 12.8-megapixel still images courtesy of the F2.8 wide angle lens and Exmor CMOS sensor. You’ll also get a built-in USB connector, HDMI output, and of course plenty of options to easily share your photos and videos on various social networking sites. Look for this one to hit shelves in October in your choice of black or silver for $180 or $200 depending on the capacity. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look, and head on past the break for the full press release.

New Pajamas Monitor Your Babys Every Moment, Thought

exmovere.jpg

Babies. I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust ’em. Those bald heads and toothless mouths. Those soft spots and unfused bones. And just when you think they’re on your side, it turns out to be gas. Worst of all, you never know what they’re up to. If only there were a convenient–yet fashionable–way to track their every movements.

What’s this? Exmovere has the solution? The company behind the Wearable Chariot (a robotic centaur-like wearable Segway thingamaglob) is giving the world Exmobaby, infant pajamas with built-in monitors for your baby’s heart rate, behavior, and even its emotional state.

The pajamas likely won’t make your baby any happier than a standard pair of PJs, but they’ll certainly be able to let you know just how depressed your kid is, by sending that information your mobile phone via a series of icons.

Exmobaby is coming out at some point next year, so go start making those babies now.

HTC HD3 to be named HD7 in honor of Windows Phone 7, launch October 18?

Ooh boy, do we have a good one for you today. We’ve been tipped off that the HD3 — HTC’s mythical successor to the wildly popular HD2 — is not only alive and kicking, but headed for a bright and sunny Windows Phone 7 future, starting as early as October 18. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, all the evidence we have for now is the above spreadsheet, which we’re told is an internal planning doc from UK carrier O2. It’s not exactly the hardest thing in the world to forge so keep your skeptical wits about you, but as silly as this inflationary renaming to HD7 may sound, we find it strangely believable. After all, why wouldn’t the company that brought us the Incredible Wildfire of Desire jump ahead a few numbers to keep up with the hot new OS’ numbering?

[Thanks, ZaK]

Video: NASAs New Gigantic Monster Rocket

DM-2 Rocket.jpg

Deep down, NASA scientists–all scientists, really–get into this business to blow stuff up. No one’s really watching Mythbusters to learn about the physics of how a cup of jello handles a ride down an escalator in a humid room. We watch to see things go kablooey in the presence of high-speed cameras which allow the kablooey to be looped time and time again in all its kablooable glory.

That’s why NASA engineers must have been in science kablooey nerd heaven yesterday as they tested the monstrous DM-2 rocket in the Utah desert. The DM-2 is the world’s largest, most powerful solid rocket motor and is designed to provide up to 3.6 million pounds of thrust. That means if it wanted to, the DM-2 could punch God in the face. The rocket is slated for use as a heavy-lifter in 2015.

To be sure, the thrust and power of the DM-2 is very impressive. But in this day and age, I was kind of hoping NASA (or private industry) might have created a more practical means of transport into space? Anything happening with that Space Elevator concept? Anyone else disappointed that in 2010 we’d still be testing bigger and bigger Godzilla rockets?

Very loud rocket test video after the jump.
