New York’s Subway May Not Survive Nicole [Updated] [NYC]

There’s a massive storm headed to New York, one that may flood the subway. What most people don’t know is that we depend on just 700 fragile water pumps to keep the tunnels dry—some a century old. Updated More »

Where to go for the Best Product Reviews

This article was written on November 15, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s hard to believe it, but the #1 most influential reviewer on Amazon who has submitted over 5,000 reviews to the site doesn’t even have an Internet connection in his home! His name is Peter Harris – he’s 56 from Leicester, UK, and over 50,000 people have seen his reviews. He started writing reviews when he lost his job in the IT field and says that his reviews are written from home, but he travels to his local library to use their Internet connection to actually publish them to Amazon’s site. It’s too bad that he couldn’t get paid for all of his hard work (5,000 reviews! Wow!), but he says it’s something he loves to do and it keeps him busy.

reviews

This got me thinking about the roll that product reviews often play in determining whether or not we buy something. If multiple people have given a bad review for a product I’m considering to buy, those reviews usually end up being my deciding factor. Amazon is probably one of the more well-known and widely used sites out there that offer reviews, but there are so many others like Newegg, Best Buy, Dell, even Wal-Mart has started a review section. Do you check sites for product reviews before buying something and if so, where is it that you go for the best product reviews? Let us know in the comments!

Sirius XM unveils $60 XM Snap, brings sat radio to any FM-capable car stereo

It looks an awful lot like the XM SkyDock that launched right around this time last year, but a SkyDock it’s not. Sirius XM has just unleashed its first new piece of hardware in a few decades, and the XM Snap! might just end up being the must-have gizmo this holiday season. Uneducated guesses aside, the Snap is actually a fairly simplistic device; so long as you have a Sirius XM subscription, you simply plug this into your vehicle’s cigarette adapter, tune into an open FM station (we’re assuming, anyway), and enjoy the muddled, static-filled mess that always ends up coming out when an FM transmitter is involved. The company has done a fairly astounding job keeping the details to a minimum here, but we are told that it’ll be Ridin’ Solo in October for a reasonable $59.99.

pJeff’s out sick today, so a href=”http://twitter.com/jillonmoney”Aunt Jill/a drops by with a valuable life lesson about privacy and the importance of being kind–that’s right, we’re actually taking a serious look at Internet privacy today, starting with the Webcam tragedy at Rutgers./p

pWe also discuss Paypal’s new iPhone app that lets you deposit checks using the onboard camera, and Jill also answers more of your burning financial questions about the value of Timeshare, establishing good credit after school, and the importance of investing in a 401(k)–listen up!/p

pa href=”http://www.pcworld.com/article/206649/paypal_debuts_check_deposits_via_iphone_app.html?tk=hp_new”PayPal’s new iPhone app/a lets people deposit checks just by signing the back and taking a picture of the check using the camera on the phone./p

pMobile check depositing isn’t new, and chances are you’ve already seen Chase commercials advertising its similar functionality, but we understand if you’re still hesitant to handle finances using your phone./p

pOn the other hand, mobile apps are actually safer than using the desktop version with a scanner and an e-mail address, since cell phones aren’t as prone to vicious malware that try to poach your information, and mobile banking still asks for the same precautionary information as a walk-up ATM machine; stuff like PIN number, bank account info, and more./p

pDon’t take our word for it though, the PayPal app for the iPhone will be available in the next few days, so try it for yourself and let us know what you think!/p

pSpeaking of online privacy, the next story is about a href=”http://gawker.com/5651367/the-tragic-story-of-tyler-clementi-rutgers-webcam-voyeurism-victim?skyline=trueamp;s=i”Tyler Clementi/a, the young Rutgers student who jumped off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate secretly videotaped him “making out with a dude” online. His roommate, 18 year-old Rutgers freshman Dharun Ravi and classmate Molly Wei, were both charged with invasion of privacy for their role in the online distribution of the film and face up to five years in jail. Be sure to tune into this segment for an important lesson from Aunt Jill. The lesson is short: don’t be a jerk./p

Apple TV vs Roku HD… fight!

Two tiny black 720p boxes, two interesting choices. The $59 Roku HD will put Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand and Roku’s 75 other content channels on your TV quickly and easily, while the $99 Apple TV offers up iTunes rentals, Netflix, and eventually AirPlay streaming from your iPad or iPhone. (You could step up to the Roku XDS with 1080p support for $99, but we don’t think the extra money will be really worth it until the USB playback channel is released and / or there’s more useful 1080p content available.) It’s a tough decision, so check out our Apple TV review, our Roku XDS review, and our in-depth comparison chart to just try to make up your mind. Then again, you could grab ’em both and still not break the bank.
