Crapgadget: Animal House redux edition

College: four (or five, or six) years of crackin’ brews, listening to tunes, trippin’ out to light shows, and snugglin’ up to coeds at bonfires on the beach. Just in time for homecoming, we have an assemblage of crapgadets that should put you in good stead, including: iBottleopener (turns your iPhone into, well, a bottle opener, for a mere $20), the BONE iPhone portable amplifier (a large, ugly horn that essentially turns your handset into a Victor Talking Machine for $25), Glow In The Dark USB memory sticks (capacities up to 16GB for $90), and an honest-to-goodness lighter that does double duty as an 8GB flash drive ($37). Which one of these “party favors” isn’t doing anybody any favors? Cast your vote below.

AppleInsider: New MacBook Air ‘certain’ to be 11.6-inches, may have flash-based instant-wake ability

Rumors of an 11.6-inch MacBook Air refresh are nothing new at this point, but AppleInsider says it’s confirmed a smaller version of Apple’s ultraportable is coming at next week’s “Back to the Mac” event, and that units are rolling off factory lines right now in preparation for near-immediate delivery. AI also says it’s been told that the revised machine will feature a novel new storage system called “SSD Card” that looks like a stick of RAM — a smaller form factor that would obviously allow the new Air to be even smaller, and possibly sport instant-on wake times, something that’s been rumored from other sources this week as well. We’ll be at the event live next week so we’ll see what happens — keep it locked right here.

Update:
CNET‘s chiming in with rumors of a “significantly lower” price than the current model’s $1,499 starting point, which is always fun to hear — the catch is that it might still use an older Intel Core 2 Duo chip and NVIDIA chipset, which is far less fun. We’ll see!

The Gigabyte Aivia K8100 Gaming Keyboard: Hands On

Gigabyte K8100 Gaming KeyboardGigabyte is most commonly known as a manufacturer of motherboards and PC components, but the company has been slowly but surely working its way into the gaming peripheral market as well, with a variety of multimedia keyboards and gaming mice. Nowhere else is this new strategy more evident than in the new Gigabyte Aivia K8100 Gaming Keyboard. The K8100 hasn’t been released in the United States yet (Gigabyte mentioned it would be available at select online retailers like NewEgg before the end of this month), but Gigabyte was kind enough to send one to us to play with and put through its paces.

The K8100 is built from the ground up with two principles in mind: making PC gaming fun, and longevity. The keyboard is built from rugged plastic and has a sleek textured feel under your fingers. Gigabyte has also included some impressive features in the K8100, including a touch-sensitive volume panel, variable key tension, macro keys with switchable modes, and anti-ghosting support that will recognize individual key-presses even if you press up to 20 keys simultaneously. It may not have the name or brand recognition that Logitech or Microsoft have, but Gigabyte’s new gaming keyboard doesn’t disappoint.

National Boss’s Day: Tech’s Best, Worst, and Weirdest Bosses

sorry-wasted-much-work-boss-day-ecard-someecards.jpg

October 16 is National Boss’s Day. This year the holiday falls on a Saturday, so for those of you inclined to celebrate such things, today is the day. If you’re so inclined, I hear that Hallmark has a fine selection of e-cards.

The holiday has actually been around since 1958. After having forgotten her own boss’s birthday –October 16 –, a State Farm Insurance employee registered the holiday with the US Chamber of Commerce.

Here at Gearlog, we’d like to celebrate National Boss’s Day in our own way: by paying tribute to the best, worst, and just generally most interesting bosses that the tech world has to offer.

Chilean Miners Get Sunglasses Donated by Oakley

miner_sunglasses .jpg

When they finally arrived on the surface after two months trapped underground, the group of 33 trapped Chilean miner no doubt got more than they bargained for. There’s talk of movie and book deals and the like–it’s all a lot to take in. The miners are no doubt just happy to be home with their respective families.

There’s another unexpected perk on top of all of that, as well. California-based high-end sunglasses manufacturer Oakley has donated sunglasses to all of the miners. The company let the miners pick between either the Path or Range models from its Radar line–the glasses start at $180.

The donation came after a Chilean journalist approached the company, explaining that the miners would need eye protection after having been trapped in the dark mine for so long.

iPhone 4, EVO 4G Powermats arrive at Best Buy

Well, ain’t this exciting! If you own an iPhone 4 or EVO 4G, it looks like the tyranny of the charging cable is soon to be a distant memory. That’s right: one of our moles at Best Buy has photographic evidence of new wireless charging systems, cases, and Powermats for both of the aforementioned handsets. Didn’t know we had moles, did you? We also analyze ‘chatter’ and sniff out KIRFs. In fact, we’re basically a full-blown Gadget Intelligence Agency — SMERSH woulda been proud of us.

[Thanks, Isaac]

Hands On: ION Audio Discover DJ

Ion Discover DJ - Panel
The Discover DJ from ION Audio is a portable digital DJ controller that connects to your PC via USB, and along with the included Cross DJ software from MixVibes, allows you to load your own music, beatmatch it, blend your own mixes, add scratch effects, and record the whole thing to share with friends or play back at parties later. The Discover DJ isn’t a professional device; meaning you won’t see it in the DJ booth at your favorite club, but you may see it in your favorite house party or amateur DJ’s setup at home.

The Discover DJ is clearly aimed at those DJs who are more comfortable recording mixes at home and doing live sets for their friends at a house party than a DJ that’s going to take their gear with them to a club or a large event. That doesn’t make it bad or lacking however, the features you get for the price you pay for the Discover DJ make it a great buy for at-home DJs looking for good bang for their buck. That doesn’t mean it’s without issues though, as we’ll see behind the jump.

“Hey ma, can’t talk, I’m on the Moon”

This article was written on February 22, 2008 by CyberNet.

cell tower on moon As technology continues to advance there is no doubt that our ventures in space will get more extravagant. NASA, believe it or not, has plans to establish a colony on the south pole of the moon sometime after 2020. But no colony would ever be complete without a cellphone network, right? NASA seems to think so, and that’s why they are whipping up plans to do just that around 2012.

The project is called MoonLite, and will offer both voice and data communication. This is NASA we’re talking about so you would expect data transfer speeds to be measured in megabytes or even gigabytes, but that’s not exactly the case. The download throughput will be an excruciatingly slow 3Kbps, and the upload will be 2Kbps. That’s like 5% as fast as dial-up! I don’t think the scientists that will be inhabiting the colony will be spending any time on MySpace with speeds like that.

Hopefully the scientists don’t sit there and text message each other while driving their lunar rovers because it will take just one wrong turn and they’ll be floating around in outer space. And you thought the call from Mount Everest was special.
